I’m so sorry! I know how you feel. I didn’t go to school for law, but I graduated nursing school in November and I took my boards (state exam) and I found out 2 days later that I failed and I was so devastated and felt so embarrassed and like an idiot because I worked so hard and did so good in school and I study so much especially for that test. What made it worse was seeing my friends from my class post on FB that they passed and it would make me cry all over again cause I felt it should have been me posting I passed; I’m happy for them but it sucks too. They make you wait 45 days before you can test again and it sucks having to wait, but I study a little bit at a time everyday and hopefully in January I will pass🙏🏻.I know you can pass it this next time girl!

As a partner in a firm who hires attorneys, reviews work product, evaluates performance, etc. trust me, whether you pass first time or third, it has nothing to do with your capabilities as an attorney and no attorney who is worth their salt judges someone for not passing first time. You will pass. Treat it as learning experience and wear as a badge of honor. We are all human and stumble along the way. In fact, if anything, it will better prepare you for the inevitable numerous failures you will experience as an attorney.

@@nicki35able000 use adaptibar (since their questions are actually written by bar examiners) and then practice your essays, do research on the actual Bar exam, I firmly believe I passed because of the stuff I didnt do and not the stuff I did. By the time you take the Bar you should know your strengths and weaknesses. By now you also know how you study to get results. Do not change your entire routine just because a program says too. I personally bought outlines from a tutor, studied those and used adaptibar, and then practiced essays, I didnt waste time on video lectures or what the program said (because I knew what worked for me) and I certainly didn't study for 8 hours a day. I made sure to do something Bar related everyday, sometimes that was only an hour, other times 4-5 hours but again that was me. Barbri had great practice essays and books. Hope this helps 🍻

@Polly Gato That's immediately who I thought of when I wrote my response! I had just started my freshman year of college 1.0 when that hit the news. Some of the news media was horrible about it, but lawyers everywhere came out of the woodwork to say that the NY Bar is extremely difficult and that most lawyers need to take it 2 and 3 times. That stuck with me.

SO MUCH THIS!! I know brilliant people who are horrible test takers, can't write essays worth crap but can explain things so everyone understand them (because they do). My GRE had an essay that was tailor made for me. I got a 4.5, when it definitely was a 5 or 5.5 out of 6. I could have paid for them to individually review/rescore my exam, but it wasn't necessary. I got into my doctoral program. 1. You're taking it in such an unknown situation. What you have in your favor right now: 2. You're working in the field, and that will help make some of the information more relatable. 3. If you have to take it online again, you're studying where you will be taking it - which helps retrieval. 4. You don't have the distractors of job searching, moving, or a wedding competing for your attention. 5. You also have coworkers who are probably telling you that they didn't pass the first time AND probably extremely helpful in how to deal with taking the test a second time. We know you're amazing at what you do and the test isn't going to change that. Adding that you have the right idea. Focus your attention to the areas that you aren't comfortable with in this second round. I went through the Kaplan GRE book once, then decided that I needed a refresher on math, since it'd been over 20 years since I'd taken a math class. $200 well spent. All my energies went into studying math, and I'm shocked that I scored within 10 points of my writing score. (I write professionally as part of my job). Then in the last two weeks, take the multiple choice practice exams to refresh your memory on the other topics. It will be enough. If you want more coaching on studying, I build online courses for colleges, universities and now the federal government, happy to give you some pointers.

My husband and I took the CA bar in 2019 and I passed and he didn’t. We spent the entire summer studying together. You have to be brutally honest with yourself this second time around. Really reassess everything. Do not cut corners. Don’t waste time “learning.” You need to PRACTICE and that’s how you will be prepared. you need to do at least two MPTs a week. You have clearly put in the numbers and hours. This time it should be about quality and not quantity. Don’t burn out. this is rough advice but please at the end of the day be honest with yourself, reassess, and PRACTICE, practice, practice. Spend more time reviewing wrong questions and understanding why u missed it. My husband passed the second time and it was all fine. You will be ok.

hi Ari! thank you for sharing your experience! I'm currently studying for the CA bar. How many essays do you feel like you practiced for each subject? I've done about 6 essays / subject open book, hoping to do more closed book next. But not sure how many really is enough haha. Congrats to both you and your husband!
@efrennava9743
@efrennava9743 3 года назад
@@DeepaK-bz3ss I was a repeater and passed the October exam. I was a few points from passing under the previous score so I knew what it would take to pass for the newer, lower score. You want to transition to closed book essays. Try and find essays that have different issues. I had essay days and mbe essays. I tried to mimic the exam format as much as possible. So on essay days, I would study/memorize one hour in the morning. Then I would do 3 essays, closed book. Take a lunch break. Then I would compare my essays to bar website or a bar essay bank. You really need to compare them critically. See the differences in organization, rule statements, and most importantly the analysis section. After doing that, I would then get 2 essays, issue spot, organize and maybe include the rule statements to further test my memory. Then I would look at the essay analysis of each one of the issue spotted essays. That way I hit 5 essays which is the max I would do on the exam. On MBE days, I would similarly study for one hour reviewing material or memorizing. I tended to memorize both in the morning and evening before I finished for the day. But I said I mimicked the bar. I did 100 mbes, broke them down into 50 question sections like the bar. It sucked. Especially at the beginning when i was doing one subject at a time. Later when you were mixing up the subjects, it was much more tolerable. But you really need to build the stamina by doing MBEs, in California, it's 50% of your score. The higher the score the more wiggle room you have on the writing requirement which is so subjective. Once I finished the MBEs, I would grab lunch then I would go through each question, not just the ones you got wrong. And I would review each question to make sure I got the right issue, right rule and analysis. If I missed any of those, I would make a flashcard. I would make the flashcard as specific as possible. The mbes have very narrow issues. Analysis can have multiple parts so you need to do that efficiently. I ended up doing 2,500 MBEs, like i said it's half the exam. One a week or so, I would do a PT on the MBE day. There are videos on youtube on how to do an online PT that were extremely helpful. Check them out. I find that people really don't spend enough time on the PT. That plus the MBE is close to 63% of your entire score. So why not spend time understand how to excel on the MBE and PT. For essays, I did 5 essays per subject. Which doesn't sound like a lot, but I spent hours reviewing them. By the time you get to final review, you can issue spot more to get more exposure. But I find for essays, you really need spend more quality time with them. Really understand how to separate major, minor and nonissues.. Being able to lengthen your arguments for major issues is where you will get a ton of your points. For Memorizing- do what works best for you. But on the essays, look to see where issues will require longer rule statements. Sometimes they look like rule paragraphs. That's why I tended to memorize rules in rule blocks. Only apply what was needed, but if you had longer rules it was much easier to write better analysis since you will be discussing the various parts of your rule. In a week, I would do 3 essay days, 15 essays total. 3 MBE days, 300 mbes and 1 PT. I found PTs to be very doable, no memorizing rules, once you understand how to read the case and file quickly and how to organize them, they are actually quite fun. I know its weird but its the only part of the bar exam that actually feels like legal work. It was 6 days of studying with one day off. That day off was badly needed since you will be running on fumes and possibly burn out which I did the previous bar cycle. Hope this helps, I wanted to add this in case anyone is looking through this and wants a different type of schedule. Lastly, I didn't watch videos, they are a waste of time. But you must have some kind of substantive material that is a go to resource for clarification. Outlines are great but often times you will need a more in depth resource to help you understand. But the best way to learn to apply the law both and critically assess your work. If you can, see if you can get someone else to review your progress. That can help a lot. I wish everyone luck taking the bar exam, it's definitely doable. But its quality not quantity. Take time off to decompress so you can try and be fresh before the exam. You can do it!
@DeepaK-bz3ss
@DeepaK-bz3ss 3 года назад
@@efrennava9743 Wow! This is SO helpful thank you SO much! When you said you did 5 essays, did you do all of those closed book? I've done full 6 essays for ALL the subjects open book so far. I was going to shift to 2 essays/subject closed book next week and then spend the last week just doing some issue spotting on a few more essays. Is that a good plan? And when you spent 1-3 hours memorizing before an essay, did you look in advance of the essay to figure out which general issues to memorize before you tackled the essay? Or did you just memorize like all of civil procedure before an essay? Lastly, what score were you scoring at by the end for the MBEs before you took the test? I'm currently at 68-72%, hoping to get to 75% before the exam. I've been doing what you said in terms of reviewing the ones I do in depth etc. Hoping to do longer sets of 100 MBEs to build stamina. Really appreciate your advice kind stranger!

Hey Grace! I was a repeat bar exam taker this summer for the THIRD time! I graduated law school last spring, moved to a brand new state, took the UBE, and FAILED! Discouraged but not downtrodden, I signed up for it again to take this February. Feeling way more confident, I took the test and received the SAME EXACT SCORE! How demoralizing let me tell you. I knew if I didn’t keep trying, I was never gonna do it again so I signed up for it this July. Once the pandemic hit, I KNEW the world was against me and that failure was imminent. But I dug deep and found self-discipline I’ve LITERALLY never had before. Everyone told me that it was ok to have failed twice-but let me tell you it is OK to feel NOT ok. I felt like everything up until that point was a failure and waste of time. I used that to drive my success forward. I ended up also being told I could elect diploma privilege and be sworn in rather than taking the test about a month before hand. I seriously considered that option, but I had already spent so much time studying, I couldn’t let the principle of the thing go. Therefore, I went into the test knowing I had done all I could do to prepare (even with third time test taking jitters) and got it done. When I tell you, receiving the results and going up in my score 19 points, I almost DIED. I BALLED from relief. I know exactly what you felt in this video. I actually know it TWICE now. But I PROMISE you, you CAN do it. You WILL do it. And I’m excited to watch as you tackle such an intimidating beast. Practice your essays and MPT daily. That’s what saved me. One MPT a week worked WONDERS. And don’t listen to what ANYBODY does or says, you have to find the right method for you. I’m over here rooting you on from Washington State. You got this lady-FOCUS!!!!

I didn't pass my first time taking the bar exam and I did everything recommended. I didn't work, I attended the barbri course, in person, everyday for 8 hours and then studied more on my own. I was 8 points away from passing (at the time, I didn't know that you could appeal to get more points). The second time I worked and studied when I could, but overall I just changed my mindset and felt like I deserved to pass and that I'd actually be a good lawyer. It sounds cliche but when I watched videos about how to pass, from people who also didn't pass on their first try, that was the running theme. I wish you so much luck on your next try (at least you already have a job lol).

It feels like everyone but you passed. But, I took it again in Feb and raised my score by 30+ points. I didn't pressure myself, followed my own schedule focusing on where I needed to raise my score, and I basically ditched Barbri except for the study materials. I recommend reading "Fck The Bar" by Jessica Klein it made me feel a little better in the moment. I wouldn't start studying until the first of the year. I feel like I just failed the bar while watching this, my heart hurts so badly for you and I’ve watched you go through the process. You are so smart and capable. And like many others have already pointed out - tons of successful people failed the bar the first time. ESPECIALLY the New York bar. You’re still amazing and you’ve got it the next time around! Hang in there.

Grace, I have followed you ever since I was accepted into law school in Spring of 2018. I am a 3L now--just one year behind you. You have been SO inspirational to me over the years. I was there "with you" when you got your first set of law school grades, when you made journal, interviewed for jobs, started new jobs, etc. I have always been so impressed with how organized and prepared and hard-working you are. And so grateful that you have shared your journey on your channel. I am SHOCKED that you didn't pass the bar exam. It makes no sense. I am so sorry that you have to take this on right now when you weren't expecting it. But I can guarantee that this journey for you will inspire SO many women and you will continue to be a role model for how to work hard for what you want, how to accept disappointment with grace, and how to move forward through disappointment. You can do it, and I know you will.

You took the bar in an impossible year, when the bar scheduling and even if there was going to be one period was so up in the air, and you had to take that whole damn thing ONLINE. Which I literally can't imagine doing. Please don't beat yourself up too much. Like you said, it's not an exam you're meant to study that long for, and esp not to take online. Staying focused and absorbing that much info, not going insane studying for 6 months for this sounds like a nightmare to me. You'll take it again, hopefully in a normal setting and you will CRUSH it! You're gonna be ok🤗 Also, proud of you for staying off social media, I think that's crucial during this. Also proud of you for being transparent, because there will be others who failed, feeling helpless, then you go online and how often do you see youtubers being so transparent about failing? Seeing your story will make a lot of people feel not as alone, both now and in future years.

Your feelings are VALID. A close friend of mine took it 3 times, one of the times only failing by a marginal amount like you. He went through hell all of last year. Quit his job during covid to study, couldnt pay rent, could barely afford anything. He wanted to quit after the second time, he was deeply depressed. A lot of your emotions in this video are reminiscent of that horrible time he went through. But he kept going. He just found out he finally passed yesterday in California. I've never seen him more relieved or happy. PLEASE KEEP GOING. You will pass eventually. The process is HELL, but don't let this score define you. What I can say is that I have watched as you have done EVERYTHING right. You worked your ass off during law school and dedicated so much time to studying for six months straight. Anyone that has been following along on your journey knows you did everything you possibly could. You gave it your all despite the global pandemic screwing things up and you are a total badass. When I found you three years ago you became a role model for me. You’ve now graduated law school the same year as I started my 1L semester: it felt surreal to me to come full circle that I’m beginning the path of my dreams while you were wrapping yours up and moving on to the next steps. I respect you so much because of your work ethic, self-integrity, seriousness and discipline, but also that you’ve always been so human and taken things in stride. Even if you feel the shock of your “first big failure”, this just doubles down how much of a role model you are to me. I just know you are going to pave an amazing path towards redemption: figuring out the study process and taking it again and making it work. I myself wrote the LSAT twice because I was crushed by the disaster of my first score. I felt like a failure that first time too. But we made it: you and I. I made it into law school and you made it to the end and have a job: we keep going! We process setbacks, learn, grow, become stronger. You are incredible and intelligent and you are going to show us how an amazing person faces failure and bounces back. We all respect and support you so much, Grace. Hope you feel better soon and find your drive again. 💕

I failed my first bar exam last February. I took the Texas exam and had a break down on the final day which was essay day. I retook it in September and passed. The difference in my scores was shocking. Sometimes it really comes down to the day and how you are feeling. The best advice I can offer as you study is don’t compare your last experience to this new one. I constantly wanted to tell myself “You already failed once and you thought you didn’t. Why is this time different?” If you can stop the negative self talk that will creep up it will truly make a difference in your confidence the second time. I also needed to boost my MPT score. I spent so much more time reading the grading criteria on the practice problems and learning what they award points to and what they don’t. It helped me to use my time more effectively while I outlined. I know how heart breaking this feeling is! You will get through this!

Also, I dedicated one session with my husband (who’s my biggest supporter and witnessed my hard work.. ) I vented the shit out of everything! my fears my insecurities wnd then I said you’re done. You’re not gonna cry about this anymore. Just retake when you’re ready. I did not register for Feb because personally nothing has changed pandemic wise. Just echoing everyone’s comments here - failing the bar is NOT indicative of your intelligence! It’s honestly such a stupid exam, testing you crap that you’re mostly never going to use. Plus it’s a curved exam so you never can really gauge how you’re going to do no matter how prepared you are. I failed the July bar last year and I felt so devastated... especially because most of my law school friends passed. And to think I had to go back and put in ALL THOSE HOURS and do the whole thing over again was so depressing and daunting. But hey, I picked myself back up (because I had no other choice but to lol) and took the February bar this year and passed. And don’t think that you’re starting from scratch. You have such a solid foundation - all you’re doing now is review. So bottom line is, you will pass next time. Just try to analyze where your weakness was this time ‘round, keep practicing, and you got this. Have faith.

I didn't graduate from my masters degree in may (when I was supposed to) this year because I got so depressed when covid hit. I was already falling behind and then figuring out quarantine, losing access to my professor, my classmates, and all the library resources just sent me spiraling. I ended up finishing my thesis in the fall and I was so embarrassed that I didn't tell any of my classmates until later...you are not alone in feeling embarrassed. It took me the next 6 months to heal from that and both forgive myself and understand that this year has just caused so much unprecedented mental chaos. I’m the only person in my hiring class at my job that didn’t pass and it’s one of the most isolating feelings. I stayed in bed for three days after I got my results and have somehow managed not to cry on camera at work but the pain eventually eases and subsides into rage and determination. I was motivated the first time but this time around I’m just really pissed so hopefully that will give me the fuel I need to pass.
