What I learned over the years is that sometimes your failed work could be your greatest masterpiece when someone else looks at it. Great video Irene! 🙂

Really love when big photographers show that they are not perfect they have times when they aren’t satisfied with their shoot and have troubles or obstacles they learned from. It reminds me everyone makes mistakes but that doesn’t make you not good! So a big thank you for this reminder!

Hello Irene! a lot of heat gets lost through the bottom/ground of the swimmingpool. if you can either insulate or reflect back the heat (which is sort of the same) the water stays warmer a lot easier. A cheap easy and very effective way is to put something reflective under it, like for example those covers you can put on your car windscreen when it gets cold outside, or the reflective stuff you can use under flooring in your house. most reflective side up, always. Thanks for the video!

For the hot water in the pool, you may be able to fill directly from your hot water heater depending on how far away it is. Hot water heaters have a water spigot that you can attach a garden hose to. This is a design feature that allows the tank to be drained for repairs, but you could also use this to fill the pool up if you had a hose that reached.

Ohmigosh, Irene, thank you so much for sharing this video, it's so helpful. This is exactly the kind of photography I LOVE to do, and yes, I've definitely had those days of "shoot, I'm not in love with what I'm doing" and end up not using it or reshooting, but it's just great to know that other photographers feel the same sometimes, no matter the success of the photographer. And I always complain that my place isn't big enough, or I don't have my own indoor studio, but then I see the space you have and how you make it work and how beautiful your images turn out and it makes me want to just do it anyway. Love it, thank you so much, you are truly inspiring!

You improve every year. Three stunning models, but your sister absolutely stole the show. Of course, she usually does. I liked the fancy set and loved the simple set. Can’t say what made it so great except the dynamic between you two is exceptional. It seems a long time some we saw her, but this made it worth the wait. Thanks.

Yes, I agree. It was a little too many props on the shoot with your sister. I absolutely loved the simple portrait of her though. I would love to see your last shoot in a proper size dress, and I think you were right on your comments about your first model. I could certainly where you were going with your story with her. Would be interesting to see you try again with her after you make sure the water is more comfortable. As usual, great job and you are very talented!

We fill a pool with an adapter on the sink faucet and run out the window to have warm water to fill it. To keep it warm- rocks in the oven? Souvide immersion machine? Beautiful photos, i think the tomatoes out of the shot would've made it just fine. Your photography is so different than what I have done, but I learn so much watching these.

As a classically trained oil painter, one trick we use when we have a busy still life+ figures is to allow the foreground to have less detail and less light. Fewer, bigger brushstrokes leaving soft edges work for me but Photoshop blur and Burn/vignette gradient can work for you to a similar effect. You could also take some items off the table or bring them all close together, leaving more of the table exposed for visual rest

I really love the photoshoot you did with your sister, including the table set up. I already like how it looks but I think it could be improved even more with just a few tiny adjustments--the large water jug is probably what draws more of the attention since it's so shiny and light-colored--so maybe just remove that completely or in post you can darken it and remove the shine. Another thing you can try is moving the veggies and table cloth closer to the camera. Right now there's a lot of negative space at the bottom of the photo while the veggies are a bit too close to the model (esp. the squash), making it look a bit cluttered. I think moving them out a bit will help the entire image "breathe" and you won't feel like they're taking the attention away from the model.
@IreneRudnyk

Suggestion for warming the water - water bed heated pad .... I would get one specifically for water beds, so you know it won't mess up the plastic/under side of your pool ... but we had waterbeds growing up, and there is a heating pad made specifically to go UNDER them to keep the water warm. It might take a few days to get up to the desired temperature. Good luck! :) Keep making videos!!!!!

So funny how we sometimes treat our "not so great" shoots while the images are still very very nice! Good to know I am not the only one! About your painterly shoot.. I do a lot of painterly kind of shoots and I think what might help is to make sure the light doesn't hit the props as much. There where some shiny elements, like the vase and such, that caught a lot of light. You can also shop the shine out a bit and darken the bottom a little. Also an octabox gives harder light than for example a deep white umbrella with a black outside. They props won't reflect as much light. But honestly I still like it anyway what you did. 😅😊

I am folio building at the moment and I have mode calls, I usually get what I am looking for but I get so worried if I don’t and basically my model waisted her time. How do you handle that if the model isn’t getting paid for her time, 😃

I think the shoot with your sister was good. Maybe would have liked to see a little wider shot including just a little more of the table giving the illusion or more space and adding to the mood of the shot, but that’s just my thoughts. I have found that some of my shots that I’ve disliked the most are somebody else’s favourites. Especially true when I show them to other artists

This is very encouraging to see and thank you for that! Kinda makes me a little happier that not all of my shoots are as perfect as I want... Or at all... Now I don't know much - hence why I've been watching your videos to learn - but could it be that the scene with your sister and the soup was not elaborate enough? It wasn't quite a scene as there was blank space on the table and, in particular, the wall that somewhat broke the illusion. The stripped back shots, however, were cracking because there were no other distracting elements. Again, thank you for posting these videos! Well, all of them.

I think you had the right idea on the session with your sister. It may not necessarily be the number of items, but the scale. The pitcher was way too large and too white, and competed with your subject. Perhaps a smaller, darker pitcher, or even a bowl instead (and it could have held some of the tomatoes) would have worked. It’s wonderful that you shared your “failures” (which really weren’t), to show the process of working through your setups. You are very kind to show both your very best work, and what you consider to be your less than stellar images!

I agree about too much stuff in the frame in shoot with your sister. The simple portraits were fantastic though. More often than not when I go out there ends up being something wrong that I don't notice till editing. I'm really bad at noticing things during the shoot. Sometimes it's an issue with an outfit, something weird the model is doing with their face or hands, something distracting in the background, something looks awkward with the pose etc.
