Moderator Andrew Bevan, style features director for Teen Vogue, joins André 3000, SCAD president and founder Paula Wallace, and SCAD alumni Greg Brunkalla and Jimmy O’Neal to discuss the “i feel ya: SCAD + André 3000 Benjamin” exhibition at the Mana Miami Wynwood in Miami, Florida.
The exhibition, which coincides with Art Basel Miami Beach, features 46 custom jumpsuits designed by André 3000 alongside Brunkalla’s experimental film “Trumpets” and O’Neal’s oversized mirror paintings.
Over the course of the panel, the artists dove into questions about the nature of art, the effect of social media on the creative process, the importance of collaboration and the inspiration behind their works on display in Miami.
André 3000 is one-half of the six-time Grammy Award-winning duo OutKast and designed the jumpsuits for each leg of the group’s recent 20-year reunion tour. A man of many hats as well as jumpsuits, the multi-hyphenate performer was recently nominated for an Independent Spirit Award as Best Male Lead for his portrayal of Jimi Hendrix in the 2013 biopic “All is By My Side.”
Greg Brunkalla’s recent work includes interactive installations and advertisements for Nike, HP and Lincoln; music videos for Vampire Weekend; and a series of intimate celebrity interviews for The New York Times and W titled “Screen Tests,” which earned him three Emmy nominations and a Webby Award. Brunkalla earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in film and television from SCAD in 2001.
Internationally exhibited painter Jimmy O’Neal was listed in the 1995 Guinness Book of World Records for creating the world’s largest painting at 80,000 square feet. In 2003, his "brain machine," a device that paints from EEG connections, was included in "Painting 4," a large-scale exhibition at the Rose Art Museum of Brandeis University in Massachusetts. His many public artwork commissions include a 2007 large-scale mirrored work "The Nine Muses,” now permanently installed at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. O’Neal earned his bachelor's degree in illustration from SCAD in 1989.
Paula Wallace is the president and founder of the Savannah College of Art and Design, a private, degree-granting and accredited university for creative careers. With 36 years of education leadership experience behind her, she has presided over the university’s unprecedented growth at its locations in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia and taken SCAD global, opening campuses in Hong Kong and Lacoste, France.
