In this episode, we unbox and test out the Nintendo Switch Online controllers designed for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System as I Finally Bought a Nintendo Switch Super NES Online Controller.
It's no secret that the Super NES is one of my favorite consoles, if not my favorite console of all time. The library of the games and the memories I have of playing it in high school are absolutely amazing. When I heard that Nintendo was going to release Super NES games to the Nintendo Switch through the Switch online service, I was sold. One of the interesting features is that they promised controllers dedicated to the specific systems available to Switch Online members. At $30 for a single controller, I had hesitated to purchase the Super NES one. After all, I had third-party alternatives that were good enough, right? Well, I finally pulled the trigger and dropped the 30 bucks, and let's see how it comes out of the box.
Similar conceptually to the Nintendo 64 and the Sega Genesis Switch Online controllers, the Super NES controller is only available as a single unit in a package. Inside the box, you will get the controller itself and a nice, durable Nintendo USB-A to USB-C cable. Unlike the NES online controller which came out previously, you cannot charge the super NES controllers by sliding them into the rails on the Nintendo Switch, you HAVE to plug them in via USB cable.
The overall design and layout are virtually identical to the original Super NES controller. The face buttons are the same concave and convex design as the original, the d-pad is the same size, the shoulder buttons are the same size, and they also added a ZL and ZR button closer to the center line of the controller. In the middle of the top of the controller you have a USB-C charging port, and the bottom of the controller features your pairing button, along with player indicator LED lights.
Pairing to my Super Mario Nintendo Switch OLED was super easy. I used another controller to navigate to the controller screen, selected change grip order, and entered the pairing mode on the controller. With a quick press of the L & R shoulder buttons, I was paired. Pretty easy!
What is one of the cool things that Nintendo has done with their Switch online controllers is when you use them and launch a Switch Online service game that is compatible you get different audio cues. The same is true of the Super Nintendo controller, and in fact the background on the menu changes from red to gray and purple to match the Super NES color scheme. It's the subtle things that make it worthwhile.
Diving into the Super NES online, I started a game of Super Mario World. I know this game extremely well and everything functioned exactly like it should. Button presses were great, the d-pad felt really good, and overall I was very pleased with the results. I also played Star Fox, Yoshi's Island, and others with similar experiences.
I played a few additional Super NES online games with it, but then I decided to test out some other titles that weren't a part of the Super NES online catalog. I've had issues with button mappings in the past for these games, but I was pleasantly surprised here. Street Fighter 2 Turbo was fantastic, as was Castlevania 4 in the Castlevania collection. literally, everything that I played was terrific that could be played with a Super NES controller. One bummer, however, is the fact there is no dedicated home button. So if you're playing something other than a switch online game you have no way to get back to the main menu.
Why it RoX:
- Virtually identical and design to the original
- Great functionality and responsiveness
- Only $30
- Unlocks special menu noises and switch online games
- Good battery life
What could be improved:
- Cannot be charged on the Switch itself
- Only sold in single packs
- Must be a Switch Online member to order
- No dedicated home button
- Only available online
Should you buy one?
If you're a fan of the Super Nintendo like I am, and if you are a Switch online member then what are you waiting for? I'm kicking myself that I waited so long to finally pick one of these up. This is a damn fine controller and Nintendo has knocked this one out of the ballpark. My few complaints and things I wish could be improved are more gripes and looking for needles in the haystack versus real negatives to the controller. I wish you were a little bit less expensive, 25 bucks would be better than 30, and having a home button would be much better too. Beyond that, this is an exceptional controller you should definitely pick up. I'm just glad at this point Finally Bought a Nintendo Switch Super NES Online Controller, it's so good.

I usually hear good reviews on the SNES Switch controller, so I'm continuously glad to hear it again here. I adored the SNES controller and honestly, I think it's a must-have for the virtual console 16 bit offerings because you gotta have that proper feel.

Got one last week, been using it with OpenEmu on my MacBook Pro hooked up with HDMI to my TV. Works like a charm. Even better than OG SNES in my opinion.

Would be great if Nintendo would make these available to people more easily! At one point I purchased a subscription to Nintendo Online to buy one, and then discovered that I needed to activate the subscription on a Switch, which I don't have...gave the subscription to someone else so they could order the controller for me, and of course that never happened. So I stuck with the 8bitdo options, which aren't paywalled behind multiple layers of other things you have to buy.

I have one of these and it’s great! Despite the lack of a Home button, this was my main way to play Kirby 64 (because that game doesn’t support analog control) until I could get an NSO N64 pad, and I’ve also been using it to play Sonic Superstars lately, it fits the game like a glove! When playing Kirby 64 in handheld mode, I usually put the left NSO NES pad in the left side of my Switch so I have a d-pad I don’t need to angle my thumb uncomfortably to use! I’ve also used the NSO SNES pad to play Pokken Tournament a few times and the controller goes very well with that game! I did once play Wreckfest using the NSO N64 pad and while it’s not ideal, with ZR being a small square near the USB-C port, but it works! (I only used that pad on that occasion because my Pro Controller was still charging!)

You know if you want a D-pad for the left Joycon in handheld mode, Hori makes one.

Wish they’d make at least one N64 controller for every hundred of these they make. Their restocks of the N64 controller have been pitiful.

Thanks to Street Fighter II and the Genesis 6 button controller, I’ve always preferred the “fight pad” over the standard SNES controller. Sure L and R as shoulder buttons do serve a purpose as shoulder buttons, but some games (like fighters) it’s awful. I scored two Hori Fighting Commanders for SNES Classic on clearance. I then got 8BitDo GBros adapters. So those are my go to SNES Switch controllers. Because L and R are BOTH on the shoulders AND on the face. The dream SNES controller for us Genesis kids. I notice a little latency because wireless connectivity and I think I may have interference though
@RoXolid
@RoXolid 9 месяцев назад
For me I preferred the SNES controller for the opposite reasons. I used the SNES controller basically as a remapped 4 button controller, with the shoulder buttons being light kick and punch.

I use an og sfc controller I got cheap with a 8bitdo board swap. The only thing I don't like is it has a barrel to USB cable and not USB. I get why they did that so you keep the stock look. Also about you not getting a reply. I contacted him once via email about their wireless USB adapter V2 and got a reply. Probably why they didn't respond to you is they might not expect questions for support via social media and could expect that via email. They responded very quickly to me via email. The only other thing I would prefer to be better if their bord is if the battery life be better. But that's just a personal preference.

I've always liked the SNES controller form factor, hence why I am a huge fan of the SN30 Pro from 8BitDo. All the modern features while keeping the classic dogbone shape. I would get one of these just as a display piece, it's such an iconic controller.

When it comes to changing your mind about 8bitdo, you're as stubborn as my Italian mother😂. I an very aware of how you feel about them, but at least give the Snes bluetooth adapter a shot. It works flawlessly with a Switch Snes controller on original hardware. Same goes for the NES and Genesis adapters. I use the Switch Famicom controllers on my nes and famicom and all you do is hit the pair button on the switch controller and wireless receivers. Come on, Gary you're missing out lol.

No, I'm not missing anything. They have told me what they think of me as a consumer, they have 0 interest. So I am simply repaying thim in kind. Like anything would be better than just radio silence. It remindes me of a scene from one of my favorite movies, Back to School with Rodney Dangerfield: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pDLzLUmtU3w.htmlsi=P_bOp-I5wANBsnux&t=18

The N64 controller feels necessary for playing N64 games on the online service plus it can link to emulators, a no brainer purchase.
@RoXolid

There are some great 3rd party N64 alternatives though
@GiSWiG
@GiSWiG 9 месяцев назад
I think I might pick some of these up. Too bad you don't get kick-back from Nintendo. I've always said 'go first party'. I just had to make a working Power A controller out of two broken ones (I transplanted an analog stick). Two $30 controllers to make one good(ish) one vs. one $60 first party... I do have the 8bitdo Pro 2 and no need to let your feelings known yet again but it works ok. (I will say that their new Ultimate controller for Switch SUCKS!) I have the NES controllers and finally got the N64 controllers and really, after using the Retro Fighters Brawler64 NSO editions, the analog stick on the N64 controller wins in games like Mario 3D. I can just tilt the stick a little bit and walk as expected. The Brawler seems to lag. I can walk, but it seems to initially register at roughly 10%, which at that point, I'm jogging. I have to throttle down so to speak after I start moving with the Brawler64. I got two of each kind and they are all like that.

I bought my Super Famicom controller on Ebay for like $70 back a few years ago. I use mine on the Retroad 5 Plus and many other things. I don't really support Nintendo Online. The system can't even handle EShop I don't think I want Online stuff. I wasn't very happy with Grand Theft Auto Trilogy. It put me off on getting Resident Evil 2. I will stick with the N64 version. They need to work on things. Streaming sucks. I want to own my stuff. I don't like needing the Cloud.

@@RoXolid I think they never should have fired their N64 guy. He made stuff run fine on WiiU. It sucks now. They make bad decisions now that the Old man died. IDK.
