Hop water is amazing, but why do many of the recipes online never taste as good as store bought hop water? Today I dive deep into all things hop water and finally create the perfect recipe and compare it to other versions.

Could you carbonate with a Sodastream or do you think that would impart too much of that soda water flavor to it by gassing it so quickly?

@@Lucifurion I had the same question. I just tried a mason jar (4 cups) of water with 1 gram of hops. I'm hoping to carbonate with a soda stream, or make a concentrate water of the recipe to add to soda water.

I am trying your idea but with lemon peels, lactic acid, and with one ounce of hops but for only 20 minutes and a little warm hop addition… then straining through a coffee filter. Wish me luck. I might have to dilute 😂 maybe it was too many hops but also the contact time isn’t as long. Then just a squirt of liquid stevia might be good at the end. Edit: yes I added some citric acid and a few more gallons of water. I think your recipe exactly would be better.

Great video! Have to cut back my drinking and having 4 beers on tap at my bar is a problem. I enjoy the taste of the sierra nevada but not the price! Gonna fill up a corny with this recipe. Being that its 5 gallons would you adjust anything in the recipe? I was not sure if I needed more seeping time or anything.

My guess with lagunitas is that they'd add live slurry to be filtered out later - because the slurry is active it should be able to break the glyosidic linkages? (just a guess)

Informative. I’m more interested in some kind of concentrated extract that I can add to sodastream carbonated water and get something that tastes good even if somehow different than the SN / Lagunitas products. But still useful/interesting.

Looks good! I went way overboard with the hops on my last one. For a 5 gallon batch I did 1.5 oz in a hot steep, then added another 2 oz directly to the keg. I guess more is not always better! I ended up dumping half the keg. I think Lagunitas has some type of a no-calorie sweetener added and it comes across to me more like a no-calorie lime soda with a touch of hops. The Sierra Nevada one seems more like a straight hop + water drink.

@@TheBruSho Ya they do a different special release every month if you get their subscription but I have only tried the ones they have in the stores. I wish their tap room was still open to visit it in Boulder. I also found that when adding minerals to the hop water it also added a metalic off-flavor and sometimes with the hop astringency if you give it a few days it can mellow out in the fridge.

I would guess Lagunitas use yeast along with sugar to get the biotransformation going, but since they claim it's 0 carbs, 0 alcohol that doesn't seem to be the case. I've tried making hopwater using sugar to "naturally carb" and get some biotransfomration and I was fairly happy with the results, much better than earlier versions I've made. I'll try dryhopping next with a bit of sugar and yeast to see how it turns out.

LOVE this video. I can't wait to try this method. I have only tried the steeping method and Its always been quite hoppy, too much honestly. I did notice a big improvement in using whole cone hops over pellets as the pellets tend to degrade and more hop matter gets into suspension. I've bottled the water and over time a noticeable amount of hop sediment settles on the bottom of the bottle and the hoppy flavor intensifies.

Thanks for the video. I'm planning a hop water having enjoyed the commercial versions too. I thought I'd mention the yeast possibly used for biotransformation. Vermont strain from escarpment, foggy London ale from imperial, etc. (Often the hazy strains) These types of strains "biotransform" terpenes and free thiols into intense tropical flavors and that is what makes them special. Hops like Citra and mosaic have a high quantity of these compounds relative other hop varieties, which might be why it is used. There are also some engineered yeasts (cosmic punch or thiol libre) that can access both free and bound thiols/terpenes that might be worth a shot. Generic and inexpensive hops like cascade can give you a heavy guava note with these yeasts

What i learned from extracting marijuana into water: it only becomes soluble at enough pressure. So try dry hopping in the keg while carbonating at high pressure. To achieve that biotransformation i would try to add an amount of sugar to the keg with the yeast and hops in a sock. Let it naturally carbonate to high pressure over 1 week. Then cold crash and serve. And try a philly sour yeast instead of lime 💚

Very cool idea. I liked your trying to make beer from grocery store items, What do you think of making prison alcohol and making a vid, just cause I know u know alot about fermenting it would be cool to see your take on it

Thanks for the vidéo, I will try this one soon ! Since there is no alcool and no pasteurisation, I am wondering how long Can WE keep hop water before it starts to be not safe to drink ?

Probably almost forever since hops are antibacterial. But the flavor will diminish over time

I always put a keg of seltzer on during the summer. The dry hop method seems too easy, I'm going to have to give it a go. Any thoughts on if this would be a good method to test out new hops?

I think making 1 gallon batches is a great way to test new hops. Small enough that you can get through it somewhat quickly and try something different. Best of luck!

The best I’ve made was kinda like a NA beer. Used the trub an wort at the end of a ipa brew day to make a 1.005 wort, us05, FG 1.000 spund, naturally carbed, hoppy, fresh delicious. I could dry hop it too, but haven’t tried yet.

@@TheBruSho yeah it’s the only way I’ve found that gets just that little bit of fermentation character and acidity that lagunitas hop water tastes like.

I'll have to give this a try. I wonder how a version that was both steeped and dry hopped would compare?

Oh that’s a good idea I’d be curious to know too! Let me know if you test it out

With your final recipe, when you infuse the hops with water for 6 hours, is there an optimal temperature your water should be? I assume room temperature is probably the best for good extraction of flavours. If I don't have a carbonation keg, would a sodastream bottle and machine work to carbonate? Obvious you need to refrigerate the water first before carbonation, otherwise the gas won't dissolve well.

Room temp is what I did and worked great, and soda stream is a perfectly fine way to make it carbonated!
