The actor who played Toad, also played Darth maul in the starwars franchise. He does a nod to this character as he spins a metal rod after a short lived victory over Storm.
@@carlluce7951 Star Trek: The Next Generation... And Star Trek: Picard. The best series of the entire franchise. And Patrick Stewart's most famous role. 😎
@@sophiedash4026 season 1-2 of Picard was awful sci fi writing!season 3 though was darn near perfect!meeting in the ready room and Borg reintroduced was great!
@@TrickyDicky2006 A lot of these powers aren't really utilized to their full potential. I get that Logan is cool, I love the character, but he's not very powerful compared to everyone else. I wish Jean, Storm, & Rogue had their powers executed better & explored more.
@@d3l3tes00n 2000s limitations and Real Life adaptation affected the franchise as a whole tbh, the scope of their powers could not truly be displayed in real life, hence why Animation in the 90s was the best way to showcase the X-Men.
Fun Fact - 25:05 27:04 In comics Wolverine had a great sense of smell he can track people and sense/smell if someones nearby or where someone was. Cool they added it into the film
One of the common themes in the comics is that Wolverine also has an animal-like sense of smell. I’m guessing that they took it out of the later movies because even though Wolverine lifted his head and sniffed right before every time that he knew something he shouldn’t have , people like Alex missed it. (Yeah. THAAAAAAT’S how he knew that that was Mystique pretending to be Storm.)
When I first saw this movie with my dad and brothers as a kid, the scene where Storm and Cyclops first appear to help Rogue and Wolverine, the ENTIRE theater erupted in cheer! It was awesome!
shout out to the opening credits of "xmen origins wolverine" too. Plus this one with the nazi camp... the whole xmen series does pretty phenomenal intros
Yep, when you think about how much stuff is made of metal or has metal components, coupled with Magneto's unrelenting force of will, his power is _very_ strong.
@@DragonTigerBoss He's an Omega level mutant, which means that his power has no upper limit. In the comics last year (2022), Magneto kept his blood pumping for an hour after having his heart ripped out, just by manipulating the iron in his blood.
And it's comic book physics, so it doesn't really work like realistic magnetism. Not all metals respond equally to magnetism. Anything with iron in it - yes, definitely. But did you ever try to pick up an aluminum soda can with a magnet? There are other forces besides magnetism - many of which are stronger. The way his powers are depicted is totally OP, but written so that he's always held back for some reason. He could walk into a hardware store, buy a few boxes of nails and kill anyone he wants and take over the world in a very short time.
The series was supposed to be built around Cyclops and Jean Grey as original members but Wolverine stole the show so they rewrote the following Xmen movies. Wolverine was from the second team of Xmen in the comics.
Well..... he along with Patrick Stewart's Professor X and Ian McKellan's Magneto. But yes, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine certainly was the 3rd pillar under the franchise.
One of the best things about this movie is it gave us 20 years of Hugh Jackman as Logan (and the rest of his career isn't shabby!) When he was cast there was universal confusion, an Australian singer/dancer as one of Marvel's most badass characters?? Proved everyone wrong. Mr Jackman is a fucking beast in these movies and his training for them was crazy.
@bell110 wolverine us suppose to be 5'3" Jackman is 6'3"... danzig is 5'3" and has the mutton chops.. i love danzig but I still don't see it as wolverine....
The guy who played Sabretooth was a former professional wrestler. When he picks up Storm in the train station he actually breaks the glass with Halle Berry's head. They had to pause filming to tend to her head wound but kept the shot in the film.
@@celiashen5490 yes. A quick search of IMDb shows that he’s done a number of other films - including appearing as Ajax in “Troy” and playing Michael Myers in at least one Halloween sequel (from 2009).
Cyclop's deal is that he has laser blast eyes, but because he got a head injury when he was a kid, his blast is permanently on and uncontrollable. So he has to constantly wear red quartz visors or glasses to stop his eyes hurting people and destroying things.
I think in the comics that they have even ret-conned this to say it is light from another dimension that his eyes are openings to. X men comics have changed A LOT since the 80's, 90's, and 2000's.
@@williamclose6978yup, nowadays his eyes are portals, and it isn't even a laser blast, it is a concussive force that wouldn't set anything on fire by itself.
@@robertgronewold3326 for sure, he's always had to contain the blast with ruby quartz, whether it be his visor or a pair of slick shades. There's even the scene in Origins where young Scott carves up his school because his glasses get knocked off.
My all time favorite X-men movie is First class, my favorite character in the franchise is Erik/magneto and the way he's written as well as how his dynamic with Charles is written is just so beautiful and complex.
I love the duality of Professor X and Magneto as they both want mutant prosperity they just have different ways of achieving it one through peace and through violence kinda like MLK and Malcom X to a degree
It’s fine for kickstarting the series off yes but looking back it is a bit dated (it doesn’t have as much action and some of it is a bit corny at times but the later films got better IMO despite the flaws).
@@RB01.10That's usually what happens, the studio recognizes what works and builds upon it later on. Harry Potter 1, Captain America: TFA, X1, Blade 1 - alot of these movies were extremely cheesy looking back
21:20 In the original comics, Storm was the opposite of this. She was never timid or meek. Xavier found her for the first time in Africa being worshipped as a deity for controlling the weather. Also, Senator Kelly turning into water and dying scared on a table like that fucked me up as a kid irreparably.
yeah, was always a bit a shock to me. Then we have Alex here thinking the guy did it on purpose, not that he was dying. The whole "his body is rejecting the mutation" thing just miles above his head.
Actually, Professor X met Storm on the streets of Cairo when she was an orphan street thief years before she went back to her mother's village and they began worshipping her as a deity.
The biggest differences that I noticed when I first watched this movie was that Rogue is now like a young teen because I was so used of the animated X-Men cartoon and the 90s and she's a full grown adult in that she was around the same age as Gambit in the cartoon but in this movie series Gambit was a full-grown adult in X-Men Origins Wolverine and that was roughly 14 years before this movie
Fun fact, Magneto is the same actor that plays Gandalf, and Toad is the same actor that plays Darth Maul in Star Wars the Phantom Menace and he pays tribute to Maul when he twirls that bar when fighting Storm.
One of the most important things to keep in mind when you watch some of these movie series back to back, is that they build on one another. Kind of the way the Bond franchise did. Better CGI, more elaborate stunts, and more character development. I wish you could feel the anticipation of having to wait a year or two for each new installment.
Modern people live in a world that someone else made for them, smh. When he said it, it hurt me as a human. I like to watch his channel, but it's just beyond sad. To not know what the wires are made out of. The level of cozy comfort in blissful ignorance that modern people enjoy.. Yep, we're not gonna make it as species.
In release order my top 3 are X2, First Class and Days of Future Past There are a few rough ones in there but overall a great movie series! Also you throwing in the Dylan clips made me wonder which video of the tabs I have open that I was watching XD
This movie was basically the beginning of Superhero movies. I was so stoked when this movie came out, because I was a huge X-Men fan. The second movie "X-2" is my favorite of all the movies.
Blade was the first *Marvel* movie to show the movie studios that comic book movies can be profitable. Before that Superman and Batman '89 laid the foundation for DC.
Very excited you're doing the x-men series. As far as favorite movies in the series, the next one X2, is pretty great. Also, Days of Future Past is awesome. Then, Logan is different and epic.
Thank you Alex, stumbled upon your channel during the holidays, and you're right, you do bring us good laughs, glad to be able to experience the first take on these as a lot of them are like you said, nostalgic and hold a place in our hearts. Glad to have you in the community. Thank you again.
This is the first video of yours I've seen and you are so wholesome. You make jokes that barely land but in a charming way. And you seem genuinely moved by heartfelt moments in the movie like rogue and wolverine connecting on the train. Superb job.
They did Cyclops dirty in these films, putting him under Wolverine’s shadow. But note that in the comics he is a total badass and LEADER of the X-Men. Even though Wolverine butts head with him a lot, he RESPECTS Scott. Think of Cyclops as the “Captain America” of the X-Men. Suuuper underrated character because of these films. Best portrayal of him is in the “X-Men Evolution” series (which you should totally react to one day if you continue on your X-Men journey 👀). Anyways James Marsden deserved better.
In case you didn’t know, the man that controls metal, magneto, is the father of Wanda and Pietro maximoff in the comics and shows. This meant that Wanda and pietro were technically mutants. I believe the MCU retconned that and changed Wanda to be a witch and since they showed their parents in WandaVision, Magneto isn’t their father in the MCU. Unless they change it and say that the parents shown in WandaVision were not actually their parents and Magneto is actually their father
Disney couldn't use the word "mutant" because Fox owned the rights to it however after they got the rights, Disney started hinting at mutants. In WandaVision, it stated that Wanda already had powers and the testing she went through just made her powers come out/made her stronger. I'm hoping that Disney uses adoption to fix the storyline a bit but realistically, since there's a multiverse, Magneto might not have been their dad in that universe.
It's as Quinnzel said. Disney at the time didn't have the rights to X-men, and thus couldn't call them mutant. They just happened to be people with the same name, with the same powers, but different history to fit into the MCU. If they rebooted the MCU now, they could intergrate the X-Men in and their lore. But if they tried right now, it would cause too many plotholes. For example, technically Thanos is a Mutant even.
@Yahmil is a new Marvel and Dc fam 🤫 You're forgetting 1 minor little Detail. Marvel, like DC, fucking SUCK at Continuity, and have reconned anything and everything 100 times over. Yes, what you said is true. In ONE continuity. But not so in others. Most every other continuity, Quick Silver and Wanda are Magneto's Daughter. Most importantly, it is that version of Continuity where "House of M" comes from, which is what the Wanda from WandaVision and Multiverse of Madness is based on. The Wanda who went crazy cause of her kids, warped an entire universe into her own dream world of madness, and at the end whispered "No More Mutants" And wiped out 99.9% of Mutants from All Timelines, All Universe, All continuity, and was the first stated fact that the Wanda was a Multiversal Threat Level, and the most powerful Mutant, and being in all of the Marvel Universe, Reconning all the old all powerful reality benders that are in fact stronger but just don't exist in the new continuities.
So glad you started this series. I started watching these comics with my kids in the 90’s. I was so excited when the movies came out. It started what has become my tradition of watching comic book movies with my sons that continues into their adulthood.
Loved this movie when I saw it back in 2000. It felt like the first real Superhero movie without the goofy effects or dialogue, especially the Wolverine intro, then Cyclops and Storm showing up in the background. The opening WWII scene with a young Magneto really set the tone too.
Ok I’m now subscribed, been watching you content for a bit, enjoy your commentary and humour, don’t ever change. Yes a clever name for all subscribers is needed
In the comics cyclops is pretty powerful, as his beam has been described as having enough force to punch a hole through a mountain, and that coupled with his strategic intelligence makes him a very capable leader, but the movies characterize him in a very different way, and they also don't put his powers on display as much as some of the other characters so he comes off kind of unimportant (imo), they sort of leaned into the romantic aspect of him.
Its hard to make him an action character since either he immediately kills someone or he just blasts them. In both interactions its not very "cinematic" since no one is getting like punched or whatever. I dont *agree* with that but thats why they sorta side line him.
The X-men universe as dreamed up by Stan Lee and those at Marvel comics is so well thought out. The back story of Prof. X and Magneto, starting out as friends, and technically still are but on different ends of the moral debate (on how to deal with normal humans). Such incredible talent of the authors of the comics.
Great dynamic with those 2, probably the best hero/villain relationship in comics. They were modeled after Dr. King and Malcom X, and the mutants represented just about anyone who was discriminated against because of their differences in race, creed or religion.
@@WT003 Yes. There's a nod to this at the end of the film, when Magneto specifically uses the phrase that is the title of Malcolm X's book, "By any means necessary." Two leaders battling for control of the destiny of a despised group - the noble Man-of-Peace, and the determined Revolutionary/Rebel Leader.
The X-Men rose to fame during the height of the anti-segregation movement. They were very much an allegory of the times, and Professor X and Magneto were directly patterned from Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X respectively. Both sought the goal of ending segregation but by wildly opposing means.
The X-Men comics series were my favorites as a kid, and I was beyond hyped when this movie came out! I loved it overall, even though I recognized some pretty big flaws. X2, however, was my favorite of all the X-Men movies until Logan came along, so I can't wait to see you get to the next one!
Jump scare happens, Alex doesn't flinch and makes fun of the 2000's jumpscares. Non Jumpscare medical scene happens, Alex Jumps hard. It's the little things that keep me here. Great insights, shared moments, and hard laughs. Love it all.
This is actually one of my favorites just because of how well they set up the universe and its rules, as well as the two warring factions, their motives and members. Simple and uncluttered and deceptively hard to do well with such a large cast. Logan and Days of Future Past are my all time favorites though. Wolverine, as you can see, is the break out character-and yes, its a paternal-daughter relationship between him and rogue. Despite his own opinion of being a terrible role model for others, he actually is a truly great mentor. He's really short in the comics and Hugh Jackman very much isn't, but he won fans over very quickly with his perfect performance in the role. Cyclops sadly isn't as popular by a long shot and the movies do him no justice. The love triangle is straight from the books. He is a tremendous leader when written correctly (on par with Captain America)but that won't really be coming across in the movies. Storm is also a better character in the comics. The movies spend more time getting her hair right than her character. Her actresses try their best but aren't given nearly enough to work with. The cartoon handles her much better. You should give that series a try, especially with Xmen 97 coming soon. Rogue is a truly tragic character (never being able to enjoy simple human contact sucks)and is handled mostly well in the movies. Jean's a complicated character in comics and movies. But can't say much that wouldn't be spoiler-ish. Magneto is handled extremely well as is Prof X. The deep friendship they still share despite being on opposite sides makes for compelling drama and they both get played by top notch actors throughout. And both are tremendously powerful. As mentioned elsewhere they are based on Malcom X and Martin Luther King Jr. In the comics the Xmen are often symbolic stand-ins for minority groups- ethnic, religious and social. White/Black/Asian straight/bi/gay cis/trans christian/jewish/islamic/pagan/athiest etc all get represented in the comics and to a lesser extent in the movies. For example, Mystique is literally gender fluid and can have sex as a man or a women(making her potentially bi as well). Hopefully the anti-woke people won't freak out to badly when they enter the MCU, although I've seen a few complaints already that they hope Xmen won't try to be SJW's and just stick to action. Xmen were built on social justice-something Stan Lee was very vocal about. As for watch order I recommend release order: X-Men (2000) X2: X-Men United (2003) X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) X-Men: First Class (2011) The Wolverine (2013) X-Men: Days Of Future Past (2014) Deadpool (2016) X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) Logan (2017) Deadpool 2 (2018) X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019) The New Mutants (2020) There are also the TV shows The Gifted and Legion(save for last) which are difficult to fit in exactly. Both can be watched after the movies are done. Xmen continuity is very convoluted as some movies are prequels and one is both a prequel and a sequel all at the same time. But the end credits (yes, make sure you keep an eye, out some of them do have an end credit scene or scenes!) for many of the movies sets up the next one. And usually has some twist that, if missed will permanently confuse you. DO NOT watch Deadpool 2 before Logan.Seriously. DO NOT. Once you see both you'll know why. BTW Legion is actually kinda a musical. Not many musical superhero TV dramas out there. Its weird, but if you go in open minded knowing its meant to be VERY weird, you might enjoy it. Drugs aren't required, buuuuuuttttttt....could help... Hope you enjoy X2. The opening has the best comic to movie translation of a character's powers ever. Wow.
DOFP and First Class are gems of superhero movies, IMO. Logan is a deconstruction of X-Men and its well written, but these two are the best of main X-Men series.
Fun little tid-bit. The guy who plays Toad, (Ray Park) also plays Darth Maul in Star Wars The Phantom Menace! He's a crazy good stunt/martial arts guy.
The guy that plays Toad (Ray Park) in this, also played Darth Maul in Star Wars The Phantom Menace. Also Famke Janssen (Jean Grey) and Patrick Stewart ( Professor X) acted together before back in the day, in a Star Trek The Next Generation episode called, the perfect mate. Just a couple of tid bits, and these movies are full of them.
Mahalo, Alex! I'm so happy you're going to watch these! The progression of the tech throughout the years is gonna blow your mind! Love to you & Sara❤ Aloha, bro!
YESSSS SO HAPPY YOUVE STARTED XMEN!!! I was rooting for this for a while! Super excited to relive all these great films with you! I was around during the premiere of the original and it was incredible! ❤
I watched the cartoon for years so by the time this movie came out, I had characters I loved and I knew some backstory. I was thrilled with this movie. I had reservations about Jackman because Wolverine is short, thus his nickname as a small but fierce animal, and I only knew Jackman as a Rom Com actor, but, man, he owns it!
This was before anyone state-side really knew what HJ was capable of. If you give that man a role, he goes 110% into it, and this film certified him as a go-to actor for authentic and convincing portrayals. The only thing against him is that he’s a foot too tall for the role, and thankfully, the producers were okay with ignoring that character point for casting purposes. Wolverine was easily the most popular X-man, and they got him for SEVEN films plus a cameo in First Class! That kind of staying power has only been seen in franchises like Star Trek (Leonard Nimoy) and Star Wars (Darth Vader and Luke).
And so it begins. Your journey throughout the X-Men franchise. Now we just gotta wait for the animated series 10:30 that's a nice little jab at the inhumans
The joy of reaction videos is, that we can relive the joy of watching our favourite movies for the first time again through you. It's like in the movies itself: it's not the thing that sells the moment, it's the reaction shot OF the things that really sells the moment to the audience.
The infamous "do you know what happens to a toad" was one of the few surviving pieces of an earlier script written by Josh (Avengers) Whedon. In his script, Toad was always joking with "do you know what a Toad..." references while attacking, therefore Storm was using his catchphrase against him... BUT since EVERY other références disappeared from the final script, this sentence just sound dumb... they only kept it to ad a line of dialogue to the character. The only to other thing kept from Whedon's script were the "adamantium finger" gag and the "prove it" "You're a dick" "OK " gag.
The unique thing about this movie is how it’s sort of the last of the time before superhero movies were commonplace, when they came out way less frequently This movie really kicked off the age of superhero films, starting with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man two years later
I love your energy and when I saw the thumbnail I just kinda screamed YES!! lol I love this movies and knowing that you're going to react to them makes me really happy
Watching this for the first time was amazing to me, i dont get along with my dad much, but one of my memories was watching the Uncanny Xmen cartoon every Saturday with my dad. Was great to see the characters come to life finally.
Alex, as you progress through the X-Men franchise, please note the relationship between Charles and Eric. Not many people talk about it, but to me it IS the greatest relationship in the movie history. The amount of respect they have for each other and their background... Truly fascinating. As for the X-Men hierarchy. I'll start with great movies: 1. Logan. Absolutely incredible from every point of view. 2. Days of Future Past. Arguably the best X-Men movie, not the Wolverine solo film. 3. X2. When the sequel is better than the original. 4. FIrst Class. When origin stories are really well told. 5. X-Men 1. Very good intro. Then decent movies: 6. The Wolverine. The story is nice, and Hugh Jackman is HUGE. 7. Apocalypse. An unpopular opinion, as people mostly hate it, but imo it has its moments. Okay that is it. And the piles of garbage include: X3, The Dark Phoenix, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I haven't mentioned Deadpool because, although it's the same universe, it feels much different. If I did list 2 Deadpools, they would be in the great section.
Like your list. Only change I make is Apocalypse is in the garbage pile. Wanted to like it but it just missed. And definitely watch Logan last. Such an incredible wrap up to the character.
It’s so nice to see a reaction from someone who hasn’t seen the Xmen series but knows the super hero genre. Great to see genuine appreciation rather than a whole lot of confusion like other reactions asking dumb questions like is that they’re super power?? When it clearly is. Xmen have always been my favourite superhero team and when these movies first started I thought it was Christmas 🎄 Years later I still love seeing my favourite characters on screen even though with different directors they changed events that really pissed me off. In the end it came full circle and wrapped up in a positive way for me. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series. Great reaction and very funny 😂 I look forward to the following Xmen reactions 😊
A few quick trivia bits for you, Alex - 1) Kevin Feige of the MCU worked on this film 2) Joss Whedon, writer/director of the first two Avengers films was called in as a script doctor for this one 3) The guy who played Toad, Ray Park, played Darth Maul in Star Wars The Phantom Menace 4) Hugh Jackman came in to this at the last minute as the guy they cast, Dougray Scott, had to drop out. No one had heard of Jackman when it came out. This film made him a household name.
About the end part where you talked about killing time and laughing; I really enjoy your content, Alex, and you do make me laugh so, yeah, job done and thank you very much!
So glad you’re watching these! They’re amazing! You’re right that this isn’t the best in the series, but that being said, it was SOOO amazing at the time bc it’s the introduction to this world and that just blows the mind. Even if the cgi doesn’t quite hold up to todays. Welcome to the evolution of tech. 😂but imagine what they’ll be able to do in 20+ years! 🤯 great reaction as usual! CANNOT WAIT to see you w the rest! Much luv from Lake Cumberland Kentucky! See u next time!
Copper is a huge electricity conductor my guy. That’s why most wiring is made with it. If you cut the rubber sleeve off 95% of wiring you’ll see copper strands
That scene with Wolverine willing to give his life for Rogue is what sold me to see more of this series. Just that bit where Logan almost breaks down believing it didn't work, and then the shock and possibly relief despite his opening wounds when Rogue returns to life in his arms.
Absolutely, and it's not even a traditional superhero movie (or even a traditional time travel movie) because it's not just about saving the world, it's about mutants trying to save their own species from total extinction.
Favorite line: "I gotta crack a book!" X2 and Days of Future Past are probably my faves, but I thought this worked as a really good introduction to the X-Men universe.
I've always wanted to have Rogues powers including she has superhuman strength and flight abilities as well added on to it especially others as well it's everything. Absorbing someone's powers and making them weak is just too OP and I'm here for it. Some people will call it greedy but I think it's pretty cool
Right. In the comics and to a lesser extent the movies, mutants tend to have weird hair styles and colors. Storm's hair is naturally white from birth, comics Rogue was born with that slight white streak, Logan's hair has this side poof wind-blown thing that reforms even after his hair is completely burnt off. He doesn't comb his hair it just forms like that. Some characters have green, purple or multi-color hair naturally. Skin tone can vary too. Mystique is blue normally. Some have a purple skin, some have red. So can eye color. Yellow for Mystique, glazed over white for Storm when her powers activate.
These movies may get slightly confusing over time but they sure are fun to watch. With the mutants and the X-men planned to be brought into the actual main MCU, it’s even more exciting and fun to look back on these movies. I can’t wait for X2, Nightcrawler is my favorite from that movie. I also can’t wait for First Class, because Beast is another one of my favorites that I think you’ll like. 😄
