Thanks to TI-Planet's programming competition, I now have a physical ZGC3 prototype! In this video, I go over some first impressions with the device along with taking it apart and looking at some of the hardware inside.
Feel free to suggest future ideas I should do with the new calculator and I'll do my best to answer any questions about it in the comments as well! :)

I like the battery. It's not permanently wired in, with a full pluggable connector, while being a bigger size so should get extra battery life. You might only replace such a battery once or twice during the lifetime of owning such a calculator, so I don't think the hassle of replacing it is a big deal over trade-offs to allow it to be a larger capacity. As long as it doesn't have crazy 'permanent' sticking solutions like most phones do (because they really do want you to buy a new phone rather than replace their battery).

"used to bad keys"? Nah, good calculator should be fast to type on for hours without tiring you out, so low force keys are good, even if they seem a little wobbly. What they need to do also is register presses consistently, which perhaps is a little more difficult to achieve with low force keys, but it's been done. Glossy keys are OK to me, i don't care. Glossy front casing is a no-no. My personal wish would be a brushed aluminium front and general 80s styling but i can definitely live without that :D

Good luck to these guys. NumWorks has been at it for years now with a calculator that’s priced less than the TI-84 CE and is superior in every way other than adoption. It’s a TOUGH market. Hope Zero’s idea of make a much less expensive TI-84 clone works out for them, but it sounds like TI is going to block that as much as possible.

3:27 I find this extremely annoying. Depending on who made that pack, it may get "spicy" if the battery management firmware doesn't optimize charging as the battery ages. Of course, all this could be avoided with a user replaceable battery pack or regular batteries. Can this be run from an external supply that circumvents the battery pack?
@TInyHackerCalcs
@TInyHackerCalcs 25 дней назад
I'm pretty sure that at least the ZGC1 can run when plugged in if the battery is disconnected, but I haven't tried that on my ZGC3.

Haven't use a graph calcultator in 10 years. Still have my modded Graph 35+ with the 75 rom at arm's reach. Why is this new company still using super low specs? 8mb of ram? 240mhz single core arm ? Cmon just stick a pi zero 2 or something similar at this point. I even thought of basically having a pi pico-style compute module controller for the main cpu (for basic calculator tasks) and using a pi zero 2-style compute module as optionally powered a co-processing unit for computing very large chunks of data, and i bet it would not cost more than 80$ if mass produced.

Good video, though I don't get what the point of this calculator is. What does this offer over an HP Prime (not even the even more souped up G2 model)?
@TInyHackerCalcs
@TInyHackerCalcs Месяц назад
@@arnox4554 Zero's business model (or at least the way they're marketing) appears to be an improved 84+ CE clone, which would use the same interface familiar to teachers as they're targeting the education market. So they're not really trying to compete with calculators such as the HP Prime, but rather the TI calculators which are extremely successful in US highschools.
@arnox4554
@arnox4554 Месяц назад
@@TInyHackerCalcs I suppose, but since it's 2024, why wouldn't they try to compete on raw hardware grunt too? Of course the Zero Calculator is more powerful in some ways, but it could probably be way faster even for (I imagine anyway) not that much more money. They could kill two birds with one stone.
@TInyHackerCalcs
@TInyHackerCalcs Месяц назад
@@arnox4554 agreed. They may beef up the hardware in future models (hopefully so) but right now I think they're set on this. The other thing is that if the software is optimized it can make good use of the hardware it has, and while I haven't gotten to comparing performance too much it does actually do quite well compared with other competitors from what I saw in other people's breakdowns. Maybe not outperforming the Prime G2, but still doing reasonably well for a target launch price of $100 compared to other popular calculators.
@TInyHackerCalcs
@TInyHackerCalcs Месяц назад
@@arnox4554 also - I figured I'd ask TheLastMillennial about it since he actually has a Prime G2 he can compare with. He said that the Zero performs matrix operations faster, but the main advantage is that they aim to be allowed on standardized tests and the Prime is not.
@arnox4554
@arnox4554 Месяц назад
@@TInyHackerCalcs "He said that the Zero performance matrix operations faster" Damn. That's some crazy optimization. "but the main advantage is that they aim to be allowed on standardized tests and the Prime is not." Actually, that's really weird. The HP Prime has a fully featured exam mode and even a way for teachers to sync them in classrooms and show the calculator display on a projector.

Just learned about this calculator watching this video and not so interested to google about it (also it looks simpler and less capable that the inspire but looks can be deceiving) what is its purpose i mean where in the food chain does this calculator fit and why ? Last but not least i believe calculators are a dying breed in their current state due to phones and whatnot but I would pony up some good money for high precision calculators which by it self is something most apps or phones cant offer not even close.... but for some reason no calculator manufactures except a "boutique" style one ( Swissmicro) but eve they are more like hp replica nostalgia market rather than high precision
@TInyHackerCalcs
@TInyHackerCalcs Месяц назад
@@billkillernic Zero's target market is in highschools as an improved TI-84 Plus CE clone. Given that calculators are much easier to restrict than phones, it's still likely they'll continue being used in schools at least for the time being. Many people also prefer having a dedicated calculator device as well from what I've heard. But it will certainly be interesting to see whether or not Zero is successful in their endeavors!
@isaacclark9825
@isaacclark9825 Месяц назад
@@TInyHackerCalcs The need to restrict outside communication is a strong factor in both high school and college. In non-academic markets, folks just use notebooks and laptops acting as general-purpose computers for their computing needs. Dedicated calculators are a niche market dominated by a few players. I think that is why there is an upper limit on what calculator features are worth implementing. There is not much for technical improvements on the existing calculators. But there is some room to displace them based on price.
