Welcome to the club ;) I actually thought you already had one of these lenses, turns out I was wrong. Not for the first time... 😅 The one thing that surprised me about this lens was how close it can focus- it's practically a macro lens but because it's quite wide anything more than a few inches from the glass looks far away.
Yes Mark, we’re slower at getting gear in Canada these days. Agreed about the close focus! It’s about 9cm I think. Great to hear from you again. Cheers!
Happy to see you posting again! This lens is the only lens that I've bought brand new, and it's been on a road trip around the US with me and I love it! Like you, I do wish it had an aperture ring like the 15mm though... :)
Funnily, I've had it on my G100 too! (sadly my G100 seems to have developed a problem with the ring dial on the back which isn't responding properly anymore..)@@ImageMaven
Oh, sorry to hear that! I haven't heard of that problem before. Maybe send it in for repairs. If it's not too old, maybe it's under warranty? Have you tried a factory reset? If it's an electronic issue that might work. But if it's a physical issue, might be the end of it. Keep me posted!
Congrats Marlene! I wasn't aware of this lens. I've probably seen it in the lists of lenses but when I saw the "9mm" I expected a fisheye and quit looking. How cool to learn it is equirectangular. It looks great! I could see using this for real estate and landscapes as well.
Hi Keith, Yes sometimes our brains forget to do that 2x math. I'm curious to see if it's wide enough for my skateboarding shots, which I tend to shoot at 7mm with my 7-14. Can't wait to get out and really test this lens against that one! And thank you for watching!
@@ImageMaven for the pesky season, iow snow and winter, which has left in the last fortnight, I have mostly used it for collecting dust on a shelf. As of last week, I found it an excellent supplement for event shooting, it adds a bit of flavour and variance. I have some plans in regards of flowers and statues, possibly also take it into abstracts. I shot a bit with the 9mm Oly with defishing applied i LR last year to "try the reach" on for size and found it working quite well for such motifs, "up close and personal oddities" if that makes any sense. 🙂
Having spent some fantastic times in Alberta I hope that everyone is as safe as possible and that the wildlife is not suffering to badly. best wishes from the UK
At last a fast wide angle prime…back in the day (film) I had a 20mm…I did wonder why om or pan did not make a 10 mm…well here you are cool….thank you for your videos ❤
Yes, I have definitely been slowing down my production to about one video a month for the past few months. (It was a long cold winter.) But, I made a video last week about Fill Flash. Hopefully this lens will give me lots of new ideas! Cheers.
Ha that's so neat to hear, Howard! I love filming my RU-vid videos with the G100 and the 15mm. Such a great combo. I look forward to comparing the 9mm with the 7-14mm for my skateboarding photos. I find the 15mm, is too long for the way I like to shoot that subject matter. Thanks for watching!
Hi Bruce, I did look at that lens a couple years back. But it was hard to justify as I already had the 7-14mm at the time, and still use it a lot, though I realize it's not as good or as fast. (I also have the 12-35, and 12-60. But I rarely use them anymore.) I seem to be shooting with super wide or super telephoto these days. I'm sure that will change as my interests ebb and flow into new areas of photography - as they do. Thanks for taking a look at my video. Nice to see you again!
Not a huge fan of variable aperture lenses. Not really sure why they could not make it a consistent aperture at 2.8 with it only being a 8-18mm. I would have purchased it long time ago had it been so… 🤔
I bought the Laowa 7.5mm before Panasonic came out with this 9mm. It would have been an interesting choice between them. I’m a Pana boy at heart, and that 9mm would be very tempting. But I was overwhelmed by that Laowa. I just wanted it for the focal width, but I was blown away with the build quality and the glass in that Laowa.
Hi Art. A friend of mine has the Laowa 7.5 and I was also impressed by the build. It's a bit more "fisheye" like than the 9mm. But I really loved using it.
Thanks! I'm very happy with it so far too. I hope to put this lens through some real live outdoors testing by the weekend. Then I'll compare it to my 7-14mm, which is what I usually use for my skateboarding photos. Not sure if I'll miss those extra millimeters of focal length. I'll let you know in my next video. Cheers.
I bought this lens last year and used it a lot. It is really fantastic. You will have a lot of pleasure with it and get interesting perspectives. Hopefully you can go out very soon.
Hi Wolfgang, This is great to hear. I'm looking forward to using it - hopefully soon. Today it's very smoky again so will be another day to stay indoors.
Thanks Sofie. I will. Fortunately I'm not too near the fires, but the smoke is blowing towards us and settling in for the next few days. I feel bad for the people who have to evacuate and leave their homes and some even their livestock. So sad.
Finally! Looking forward to more, but must admit I was surprised by how much I liked the 15 when you did the quick comparison! Both are likely great! Sorry about the smoke from all the forest fires…it’s only mid May! Let’s hope it all improves soon!
Hi Gordon. Yes, I love the 15mm for my RU-vid videos. I use it all the time now. It actually took me a bit of getting used to as I always used my 12-35mm set at 20 or 25mm (for normal focal length). But the 15mm is so nice and compact and I can't accidentally change the zoom (as I often move the camera on and off the tripod when transferring video clips to the computer.) I do sometimes accidentally move the f/stop ring though! I won't have the problem with the 9mm. Yes the air quality is still in the danger zone here for a bit, but they promise the winds will shift by Thursday afternoon - and them some other unfortunate places will get this smoke instead. I feel worse for the folks displaced or adjacent to where the actual fires are burning. And you're right it's far too early for this. It has been dry and very hot for a couple of weeks here and now we're paying the price.
Really interested in this lens too, mainly to pair it with the Leica 25-50mm/1.7, an almost perfect combo, regardless of the obvious size of the variable zoom lens… 🤔
I've been intrigued by this lens and have been watching the reviews for about a year. It's has been available but i was waiting for a price drop. Maybe now.
I was just waiting.... Finally available in Canada very recently. Of course there will probably be a price drop now that I have it. Anyhow, so far so good with it!
I will definitely be following your use of this lens. I mostly use my g9 to document progress and details of electronic products that I build. They are about 2x3 ft x 6 inch and lighting conditions are not always great at the end of the day. The lens that I have now is fantastic but the focal length is too long.
Hi Harry, Which lens are you using for that? Sounds like you're working in a tight space. You may be okay using that longer FL lens so that you don't get any distortion, which can be important for documentation. This 9mm is supposed to have less distortion than many. So I'll definitely be looking at that in all my testing. But you can't avoid all of that with wide angle lenses. Cheers!
@@ImageMaven Thank you. The only lens that I own is the PL 42.5 nokticon. I build things on a rolling table and it's mostly natural lighting with some simplistic fill. Essentially very clean garage like conditions. Sometimes I can tilt things but not always. Sometimes I go on a ladder. Or roll it outside, depending on time of day and weather. Photographic perfection is not as important but the distortions are I really don't post process. I know this will drive real photographers crazy. I don't have time and with this camera and lens, aperture priority, the jpeg right off the camera are good enough.
Hi Harry, Yes I can see how the 42.5 would be "long" in a small space. Keep your eyes out for a 15mm or 20mm f1.7 lens for those overall shots. You might find something used too. I shoot 99.9% jpgs too. No shame in that. Let the camera do its job, I say. And especially in the studio setting with controlled lighting, there's usually no need to do any fancy editing. Cheers!
@@ImageMaven Thanks. The 15 is still too long and doesn't have the lens side control. 12 would work be ideal but spendy so very interested in watching how the distortions are in your work. Thanks
That's interesting to hear, Marko. I have the 7-14mm and use it 99% of the time on 7mm, so I don't know if I will miss those few mm of wider focal length. I'll let you know in my next video. Thanks for letting me know your experience. Cheers!
Great video and congrats on the new lens . I'm new to micro 4/3 world and I wonder what lens you would recommend for lumix g100 for talking had videos that will allow for blured background if I would do waist up shot with maybe 6 to 10 feed of baground off the wall . thanks
If you have that much space behind you, use the 12-32mm lens that came with the G100 and set it at 18-20mm or so. And use your biggest f-stop like f4 or so (on this lens that's about as big as you can go at 20mm) You will need a tripod to do this. If that's not blurry enough, you may have to get a prime, like the 20mm f1.7. But in my opinion most people stress about getting a blurry background, when it really doesn't add much value to your content. The 20mm is affordable though. But it won't work great if you're pointing the camera at yourself. For that you'll need about a 15mm or a 9mm like the ones I show in this video. Again, the 12-32mm kits lens will work great for that too. Hope that helps.
Trust all is well with you Marlene as we haven't heard from you for a couple of months? Any news on what Panasonic are going to do with the follow up to the now 6 years old G9?
Hey there, Thank you for checking in with me. I’m doing okay. As far as any news about new Lumix M4/3 cameras, you know as much as I do. I live in hope.
No worry Marlene, Silence is sometime golden. I have the 8 to 18mm. Do you? I was wondering what you thought about it. If you had the 8 to 18 would you still get this 9mm. Other than the extra stop and size what would you say the benefits would be? But yes that auto focus looks good. Thanks, Looking forward.
Those are great questions to answer in my next video! I actually have the 7-14mm and I tend to mostly shoot it at 7mm, so I hope this lens is wide enough for me! Definitely need to test it to find the benefits. Will be a few days before I get out. Size and speed are what I went for. The 7-14 is an f4. Others in the comments have mentioned the 8-18mm too. You can check those out. :) Thanks for the chat!
I shot this with the G100. And all of my newer videos are shot with it. Very quick and easy to set up and use for vlogging. I also love to take this little camera when I’m out and about. I use it for street photography too. And I throw it in my bag when I head off to the skatepark. I prefer it to using my phone. I use it with a Rode Go2 external mic.
@@ImageMaven thank you very much. Asked as heard somewhere that G100 lacks ability to "refocus" from face (vlogging) to a product to be presented. However, as in your video at 0:11 its proves contrary!
Yes people really like to poop on this camera. Can’t beat it for the price and convenience. Also I like to use the G100 with my 15mm prime. That’s what I used to shoot this video. Just make sure you have good lighting on your object and it helps to have different colours or tonalities so that it can find your object easily. Badly lit black on black likely won’t be as successful as well lit and exposed black on white or black on colour. My shirt is orange and white stripes. (Even though it’s bw.)
@@ImageMaven thank you, Marlene. I'm a photographer with 10 y of experience. Adding currently MFT to my equipment and skills now, next to my beloved Canons.
