Yea I brought up a similar point in one of my videos from last year. BOTW nailed that with it's enemies as they are brimming with curiosity and do many different things that are completely independent from the player. AND the player can also interact with them in cool ways too. However BOTW only had like 5 enemy types while Pokemon has hundreds. I'm not sure how hard it is to program some decent AI but it would at the very least take a while considering the large number of them.

That seems to be what New Pokémon Snap is going for and it only makes me more excited for that game.

Just wait. Game Freak will (eventually) do that. Right now, they're just focusing on making everything work properly on the Switch

​@Aizette Lazy would not be a word to describe them. Sure they reuse animation, but when faced with yearly games(forced upon due to the pressures of sustaining the anime and TCG) it would be hard. Also the lore about the Pokemon is fantastic, pokemon like Orbeetle, Dragapult, and Grimmsnarl give depth to the world. I'm not saying they can't do better, they certainly got a long way to go on the Switch, but given the circumstances and context it makes it more justifiable.

@@Yami_Industries See they can't stop making yearly releases simply because of the things that the games needed to sustain. New pokemon in the competitive meta to spice things up, the anime so Ash can go to a new region and whatnot, TCG for new cards, and the spin-offs. Pokemon is changing it's formula in other areas and you can also see Pokemon lore and design increase. Gen 4 remakes(are hopefully) have some thought due to the time they are putting into it. Also the first game on a new console, let's Gamefreak dip their toes, as the next ones will test the limitations of the hardware and put it to the test. So just be patient.

I'll always regret that they didn't continue that series. It was so good. It truly felt like a proper evolution of the series, and one that could freely coexist with the traditional gameplay style. No, not could - SHOULD. After all, why else make all those Double Battle exclusive moves & Abilities?

It'd be very cool if non-effective moves had animations too (not status tho, only attacking moves). When you use Thunderbolt on that Steelix, it just stands there, unfazed, NO HIT ANIMATION FOR THE LOVE OF GOD (when you use Earthquake in a double battle, even Flying Pokémon who aren't affected by it do the hit animation even though they lose no health, it looks so dumb). And if you use a Ghost type move on a Normal type or vice versa, there should be a special animation in which the attack goes right through them, and a flavor text saying "The attack went right through!". But of course even something small like that is too much to expect from Game Freak at this point.

This idea is gold. This gives more sense and life to Pokémon. I’d like to see Pokémon start the fight with grounded animation then upon using fly (or like you said, getting hit with ground type move), use the flying animation for the rest of the battle (until they use roost or gravity is used). But alas, that would be asking too much from lazy GF who can’t even do walking Pokémon properly right after they succeeded to do so with earlier games: Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee.

As someone who uses gen 5 sprites on Showdown, I am used to seeing it in that position and I love it 100 times better that way (plus it works so well in the style of gen 5 sprites)

Old sprites from older games didn’t even have animation. Sprite animation in games in black or white weren’t that expensive for Pokémon. The Pokémon do have animation but it’s only after they have stayed idled for a period of time or have been told to perform a move.

Jackson Axes The stationary sprites almost never looked out of place. And besides, if they wanted to use 3D models as a reference, they could’ve just looked at XD for older ones. And since the BW sprites are animated, they could have used those too.

Excuse me Jackson but have you tried animating sprites before? Models are way easier to animate. Less having to make each frame each time and more moving a figure bit by bit.

@@the300km compared to past games in weaker consoles, the animation and textures of the game could definitely be improved. Edit: i know i shouldn't compare breath of the wild to this game (different genre and what not) but Breath of the wild looked better, was bigger and was a better game in general that was released on the Wii U and brought over to the switch which says alot. There is also someone else on youtube (forgot who) who updated the textures of the game while reducing the size of the games files. This says alot.

Its not glitched, its from a hack called Pokemon Uranium, its name is Nucleon.

Not really messed it up but made it clear that the levitating Pokemon is actually levitating what is not the case on the Gen 5 sprite where it's clearly standing on the ground yet is magically immune to ground type moves.

Tbh, i really like elektross' model. It's very flowy and satisfying to watch, but I also miss the old sprite. Elektross is probably my favourite "flying" 3d model though.

Or, if you use a flying type attack it gets into its flying animation, and if you use other types it stands down. Or in case of non flying types, special/physical attacks, since they would fly to the attacker

I was thinking that too. For normal battles they could've had the Pokémon standing on the ground and for sky battles had it flying/gliding.

Flygon needed a mega evolution

Vibrava's wings move more like a dragonfly's but Flygon's wings would probably look weird if they moved like that. I'd also like to mention that the Flygon line is based on antlions, not Dragonflies. Although I believe adult antlions fly very similarly to dragonflies.

OH TOTALLY!!! in the promotional animation series wings of twilight, in episode 7, when leon is having a pokemon battle with raihan, theres a brief moment where the flygon's wings move like a dragonfly when it takes off and lands, i never knew how much i wanted that until now

Well those animations are already in the game, he didn't make them as far as i'm aware. Honestly i feel like just making them stand on the ground isn't enough, they should fly occasionally (as mentioned in another comment) and land again, constantly switching between flying and standing. Still, having them stand makes much more sense than them just hovering in place....Gamefreak should take more notes from the Colosseum and Gale of Darkness DX games...

Redoing those models would be ‘too much work’. After all its not like they cut more than half of them from the initial development, oh wait...

They mostly would do this stuff if they weren’t on a tight deadline all the time.

Thing is he didn't even need to change or animate the models. All those grounded animations are already in the game files. All he did was mod them so they were used as the idle instead of the flying ones. That's what makes it even more annoying, is just how absurdly simple and easy it would have been to do this. With access to the source code I bet it would have taken 1 employee like maybe a weekend to do everything DistantKingdom has done so far and more. But gamefreak couldn't be assed and everyone bought it anyway proving them right.

The problem with that is that GF doesn’t actually give any fucks about the sizes of the models. Wailord appears smaller than the player, and so does Eternatus. You’re thinking like 5 moves ahead of GF here. You’re assuming they’d fix both the shitty animations AND the size discrepancies. They’re going to fix neither.

I’m probably one of the few people who says I don’t want all these unique animations. I would like them to go for a retro style similar to the animated sprites in gen 5. I quite like the 2.5d art style and they could do tons with it on modern hardware

Scyther should be grounded, but in the context of the animations it works fine. Actually, a lot of bug types work better than most flying types because their wings actively flap. Of course there are cases to be made when looking at levitating Pokémon, even those with wings, but the problem lies in Pokémon like Skarmory. :)
