A small led tv developed perfectly round circles on the screen ranging from about 1 inch to 3 inches on the inside of the glass, not on the exposed surface. I took off the glass tried cleaning it but they are still there. I'm dumbfounded as to how they got there and how to remove them. Other than that, it works perfectly.

Some, all or equivalent substitute tools could be bought for super cheap. So there's still a large turnaround. Think. 25. Maybe 50 bucks. To repair a TV that costs probably 3000. 🧠 Even the 100 for a replacement board is a fraction.

I call it a design flaw. But nobody wants fan noise on a TV so this type of issue will continue to occur. I don't see any way of having that type of processing capacity to support 4k and not having a heat issue with only passive cooling
@vgamesx1
@vgamesx1 Год назад
I call it planned obsolesce, if you want passive cooling then all you need is more surface area, thus a larger heat sink, but they want to make it as thin and light as possible, they're probably saving a buck where a little metal would make it last 5+ years longer, plus it's not as if silent or near silent fans don't exist, we use them all the time on laptops, a laptop fan just running at idle would make more than enough of a breeze to make it last longer.
@Conservator.
@Conservator. Год назад
They could have installed a better heatsink, one with ribbons.
@RK-kn1ud
@RK-kn1ud Год назад
I have a computer sitting next to me that has 4 fans running inside of it and I can't hear it. Maybe if I put my ear real close, but right now my ear is about 30 inches away and the room is dead silent. It's definitely possible to actively cool a TV so you can't hear it, but most people won't maintain it anyway.
@FrugalRepair
@FrugalRepair Год назад
Another thing the designers could have added was more vent holes in the plastic housing. Something that happens is that since these tv's just sit there the vent holes at the top get covered in dust and restrict airflow even more.

Sorry to hear about your wife’s struggles! The first thing I think of for blue tint is the LED coating (to make the light more white in color) has failed and the backlight gives off a blue light. If so, you can either try changing the settings or replace the LED backlight.

I think the coefficient of thermal expansion is different between the chip that gets hot, and the board it's soldered to. This slight difference in thermal expansion causes a stress fracture over time in the relatively weaker solder that bonds the two components together.
@TM-op7zb
@TM-op7zb Год назад
In the repair world it would be considered a bandaid. Reflowing got a bad rap because people would do the same on GPUs for computers and call it fixed. But the problem with GPUs were mostly bad chips. There isn't any real way of knowing if the chip itself is bad or if it's potentially cracked joints underneath from warping. So the safest options is usually just replace the chip or the entire board.
@FrugalRepair
@FrugalRepair Год назад
2011 MacBook GPU is an infamous one. You could technically know if it’s the solder balls versus a bond wire in the chip if you have access to an X-ray inspection machine. =)

@@TM-op7zb actually we're not just talking time it's cash flow as well. Not to many people are interested in fixing things anymore since we're a throw away society most items cost as much to repair as it does replace the exception is us few who are vested in the trade.
@TM-op7zb
@TM-op7zb Год назад
@@red2965 I would say cash flow is usually not going to be an issue for most of these "throwaway" electronics. Of all the laptops, TVs, motherboards I've repaired it's been a regulator, MOSFET, etc for the most part. Something that's been 50 cents to $1 from AliExpress(occasionally Digikey for me) or free from salvage. The time it takes to figure out the fault/do the repair and wait weeks for parts usually only available from China is what most people don't want to do.
@red2965
@red2965 Год назад
@@TM-op7zb only the diy can make that statement of you put it in the shop it isn't worth fixing because It generally cost as much as a replacement one these days it isn't like the old days tube goes out it was pretty easy to figure out then came solid state then it's all on a micro chip and thousands of dollars for equipment to diagnose issues then there's the problematic schematic issue since companies want to be secretive. Stepping away for a second the KIA is a good example.

Hi FrugalRepair. My LG 48in Oled fell over while reorganizing my room about 2 feet on the screen, and it made a crack less than 2 inches on the top right corner with a small indentation. Red light is on and blinks when i try to turn it on but no picture. So, is my $1200 tv completely toast now? I've been so upset over this and still making payments on it. T-CON stands for 'Tiny Control'? lol I pull these TVs from curbs all the time, I am blown away how casually people toss them. Usually the worst problem I have with the TVs is no remote. And even if there is a cracked screen, plug it in anyway, there's usually what looks like abstract art on the screen. I have used those as uniquely creative table tops lots of times and they last for a couple years, even if you purposely keep cracking the screen. At times, I have had 50+ inch TVs in every single room of the house, including the bathroom and hallway, just because I could (until the next months electrical bill brought that to a screeching halt.).

I've repaired TVs by switching out diodes that were obviously bad swollen and I've rewet solder connections on boards, but I have a question about my newest curb TV that said " works but no remote" Well, that wasn't true, at least the part about "works" anyway. So I wiped it off and plugged it in, looking for the standby ready light which did light up. Next I tried to find the control buttons on the outside of it which to my amazement, there were none except for a large power button underneath the standby light. So I pushed it and for a split second the screen had a flash of light go across it and that was it, after that the standby light started blinking. I'm sure this all means something, but I don't know what. Can I get some ideas from you? I look at it as a challenge to fix if it's fixable 🤔
@FrugalRepair
@FrugalRepair Год назад
Great to hear you are fixing things! For that TV it could be a bunch of things. My first thought is the led backlight shorting out. I'd check for the main voltage rails, and then start disconnecting cables to diagnose where the problem is. For example, you can disconnect the backlight and see if you still get the blinking indicator light.

The screen is black but i can hear audio and when i turn it on the screen fashes on for a second then goes black and when i shine a light on it i can see image. Should i risk buying the replacement boards? I just dont want to apend that money and be out even more and it not be fixed.. already out 500 dollars on a tv thats 13 months old

Your LED backlight is the problem. You can replace all of the LED strips or try to fix the individual bad LEDs. If you do this, the hardest part is making sure not to crack the lcd screen and keeping the lens and diffusion films as dust free as possible (and in the right order when putting it back together).

I have a vizio E390i-B1E . I was told it had no picture. The first time I tried it I got a picture but it was dim. Next time I tried it no picture. I pulled the main board out and took the heat gun to it. I just put it back in and have the dim picture again. What would cause the dim picture? I have played with the brightness. It would work ok in a dark room.
@FrugalRepair
@FrugalRepair Год назад
Not sure if the dimness is from the LED backlight or you are meaning an issue with the LCD screen / picture. Did you happen to watch my videos on fixing a tv with tape? You can try to do the isolation technique that I showed to give you clues on if the issue is on the LCD or not.

Perhaps you missed what I was saying but I was explaining how someone without these other tools could fix a tv like this with a screwdriver and purchasing a board. I showed two methods of working on this tv.

Yeah, it's always a good idea if you are picking up a broken tv to check the screen because it could be cracked ( even if they are unaware that it is)

Not free and not just 1 tool everyone says that and it's never true.
@Mat_Sedano
@Mat_Sedano 11 месяцев назад
It's almost comical how you start the video saying "with only one tool" and then proceed to use an electrical screwdriver, a multimeter, a heat cam, a hair dryer, a specialized set of tweezers, something called "flux", a hot air station (If you made a video about how a "20 dollar hack" works the same, why not using it on a "only one tool" video?) not cool
@FrugalRepair
@FrugalRepair 11 месяцев назад
Maybe you missed the part where I explained it but you can fix a tv like this with a screwdriver, buy a replacement board on eBay, take off outer plastic cover (screws), then take out the main board, there are about 6 screws holding the board on.
@Mat_Sedano
@Mat_Sedano 11 месяцев назад
Of course, but you don't make a video on "How to fix something with one tool" then proceed to fix it with several expensive tools. That's deceptive, I challenge you to ACTUALLY fix a tv using NOTHING more than a screwdriver, literally nothing, a screwdriver, and maybe your phone (no paid apps though 😅)@@FrugalRepair

This is a nice idea, but it'll cost me about 3-$400 to fix as I have no tools other then a ratcheting Screw Driver and an Ifixit Pro Tech Toolkit.
