I killed my curls... Bleaching and straightening turned my hair to straw. After years of damage, I was fed up, and was willing to do anything to fix heat damaged curly hair. In 21 days I was able to turn my dead, lifeless curls and revive them to give them new life! This is my healthy curly hair journey with pictures to show the transformation!
This is episode 2 of my curly hair journey series, so make sure you get on the playlist here to see the entire journey! • Why I Went 3 YEARS Wit...
This video is not sponsored. I paid for all products in this video myself
My typical curly hair routine involves washing with DevaCurl's No Poo, DevaCurl's One Condition, and styling with DevaCurl's Styling Cream. For my full Curly Hair Routine, you can see the video here: • ❄ Moisturizing Winter ...
I messed up. Every day I abused my hair to the point that it was like straw. But after years of experimenting, I feel like I am close to having my curly hair looking how I want and want to share my experiments with you that I'm doing every week. I'm sharing my curly hair journey, curly hair routines, tutorials, and product reviews every Thursday and Saturday.

*What's your experience with heat or chemical damage?* And if you missed episode 1 of my hair journey on why I didn't use hair products for 3 years, you can check that out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xshnIjx12eU.html

I didn't have heat damage; however, i was dying my hair every two or three weeks and my hair had chemical damage. I am now in my 6th month of no chemical or silicon or paraben free. I see a big difference in my hair. I can't wait until all my hair is healthy. Thank you for your video. I know it is a long process but I have patients. I have been watching your videos and learning how to take care of my hair. It has grown and the curl pattern is coming back. than you for sharing information and your journey.

OMGERD YESSssss! You KNOW what I was doing and it took FORRRREVA to get the curls back, too! You know, I really cannot remember WHAT I did to encourage them back then! But I am soooo glad they did! I wish I could show you some pix of how sad my hair was during the transition back to curly~glory...wait... I CAN! DUH! I will email you some, k? Yeah, I did the same dang thing of over plucking my eyebrows too...I was about 12, I think? I made SURE I told my Elissa NOT to pluck and thank GOD she has never been like me! WHEW! So funny how we have done similar thangs, babe! #soulsistersforlife Just LOVING your videos and being real! That helps soooo many people! You are such a Light! Tell your precious Mother she raised one BEAUTIFUL girl who is Light and Love! Blessings to you and yours, my sweet Angel from Heaven! xoxo

I badly heat damaged my hair by overstraightening it. I used to spend two hours every morning trying to tame my mane. At the age of 14 I said I WANT that extra sleep and shaved it all off. Its now been three years and I'm still shaving myself bald because I love the look. At this moment in time, however, I'm growing it out.

It might help .fingers crossed. Hope u get back your beautiful hair again.

@Lxrd Kami from my research in all these months I got to know that vitamin d ,b12, thyroid and testosterone hormone, micronutrients copper and zinc play huge role in having proper.healthy.hair...get them tested..atleast b12 ,d n thyroid...if it's.just.deficiency you can take appropriate supplements...I had hairfall prob along with loss.of.curls

I have so much heat damage you wouldn’t believe I always blow dry on the hottest setting and from a young age I was straightening my hair but I’m on my natural journey but I’ve got these ugly bits of hair that are stringy and straight so that’s why I’m embarrassed to get a hair cut bc I feel like the dresser with think it’s straight and cut it a certain way and when the curls grows out again it will be so uneven 😭

I think we may be the last generation to really feel the effects of this, at least in the US, because the body positivity movement is pretty strong so it seems like culture is changing and people are more accepting of people's unique look. Hopefully we keep moving that way so we can all feel beautiful with ourselves! 💚

Totally relatable. Never bleached but used a lot of box dyes and straightened my hair every day as well for years. Eventually my sister told me that my hair looked like hay and I became very self conscious because it was true. Last year October I decided enough was enough and I hid away my hot tools. I'm 4 months in to my journey and I still have so much more to learn and long to go before I have my curls back, but so far the progress is amazing, I'm seeing so much growth, so much retention, and my hair is becoming stronger.

From the bottom of my heart thank you so much for making this video! After not using heat for over a year decided to go to a salon to get it straightened for a trim and ended up with quite a lot of heat damage (on my ends AND roots). Almost chopped most of my length off in frustration because I didn’t even think it could possibly be silicone buildup. Only on day 7 of following your tips but my curls have already reverted about 80% of the way. Again, thank you so much Amanda. You’re a lifesaver! 😭💕💕💕

Really encouraging I also had beautiful curly hair about 5 years ago..because of the negative comments from my family and friends,I went for permanent straitening and heating ..literally I was torturing my hairs for last 5 years..as a result I have developed bald spots on my scalp and gone through severe hairloss..I came across this video and I went and cut short all my damaged hair last month and stopped using blow driers and straighters. I am trying hard to get my old curly and wavy hair back.I believe, one day I will accomplish it. Thanks for inspiring me and millions out there❤

I totally agree with you on the princess diaries part. So naturally I felt like I looked prettier with straighter hair too and kept straightening my hair

My only true hair disaster was in elementary school when I let an aunt put a curly perm in my hair (though my hair was already curly), because she was doing that on my cousin's hair and I wanted one too. Within weeks my hair started to break off and my mom had to cut almost all of my hair off. Luckily my hair grew back fast. I've never chemically damaged my hair per se, but I did relax my hair from middle school up to my junior year of college. My hair never broke off and looked fine (other than being super flat with no body or volume). But my scalp was a mess. Even though I used "mild" relaxers, my scalp would always get chemical burns. So glad I went natural!
@AmandaBicket
@AmandaBicket 6 лет назад
Thank you for sharing! I can totally relate to wanting to do what your family is doing. My sister had her hair relaxed when I was 12, my older cousins all had their hair relaxed and it's what encouraged me to relax my hair also when I was 13. It all broke off from my waist to my chin. Ouch! Chemical burns. That's awful. It's interesting that only your scalp was negatively impacted. It really shows resilient your hair is! Now that you wear your natural hair, it's probably so resistant to breakage 😍

I know it can be sometimes overwhelming to be loved, protected, and cared for by someone, but it's so important that we do for each other, and that you know you are loved, protected, and cared for. Yes, I know we're strangers, but we look just alike, Amanda-- we're both young, brown girls trying our best to deny what we've been told about ourselves, that our natural hair ever needed "fixing" and doing our best to accept and truly believe that the ways we were made aren't just enough, but they're exactly how it and we should be. I hope I don't make you sad reading this, but just know you have a sister in me fighting alongside you. I'm a 23 year old college student about to graduate, sitting in my bed, and just thankful to God that I have enough confidence to be wearing my hair curly today (it hasn't always been curly, as I have conformed for so and too long to straightening it). I'm glad and happy our hair is curly, Amanda. And again, you are so beautiful and what you said in your video is so helpful and courageous. Thank you again! Love, Brooke

I keep my hair in a bun a lot with a large satin scrunchy, that helps. Also if you use products that hold your curls together well that helps too. Do you live in a humid place? You could have products that aren't designed for your climate. Like I found my hair products that had glycerin made my hair go crazy on day 2 and 3 if I'm in a humid place. Hope this helps!

I got bullied for having curly hair (i am white) and got called a sheep. So I combed and washed them everyday. Never used heat damage tho. Also no conditioner and I bleached my hair two times. At age 16 I embraced my curly hair but the damage was done and I was still using the wrong shampoo and not enough conditioner. I cut my hair and let it grow out and changed my diet and routine. Now at 22 I found out about protein treatment and do co wash only to bring back the moisture in my hair and the curls.

We relate so much! I've been heating my hair non stop since middle school till about my last year in high school (so about 6-ish years) But that's whenI really started getting busy with uni studies and I noticed my hair literally dying and needed care. Now I'm a senior university student and I am starting to care more about my curls. We've always been told and shown in media & in daily lives that straight hair is fab and curls are ugly. Growing up, I realized the beauty of curls and now I know that healthy curls are a bless.

This video really moved me to go silicone free for sure, my hair is so limp so I think that will help. It's funny, I've had so many of the same disastrous hair experiences as you but my hair is stick straight! Bleach for 1 year, pixie, grew it out only to put MORE bleach in it for an ombre, and blunt bangs that I'm still trying to blend into my hair. I even spent the last few months trying to accept my newly grown-in brows! I cut out the last of the ombre in November 2017 and have been completely natural since, committed to loving my hair the way it just is :) I want to grow it long, but I have a ways to go as it's only about an inch below my collar bone rn.

Your hair is beautiful. I am trying to get rid of a keratin treatment in mine, my hair is a MESS! It's short, stringy, flat, thin, frizzy, and dull. I can't pull it back (too short from me chopping off damage) and I think about straightening it every day. Videos like this make me feel so much better. I am one month in to my curly hair healing process, and even though our curl pattern is quite different, you have given me so much to look forward to. I just need to not give up. I hated the straight bangs and curly hair too 😷😷 they looked great separately but not together. At least you got that right lmao. In April 2016 I officially started growing out my natural hair because dying it was so damaging and just a pain in the ass to maintain. I never grew out my hair in high school cause I was too embarrassed to let my gray hairs show. Last February I chopped off all the colored pieces into a pixie cut and it’s finally grown to my armpits. So healthy and pretty, and sometimes people actually compliment my grays ☺️ To anyone wanting to dye their hair and style it more, believe me I’ve been there but I recommend treating your hair the best you can! Unless you’re will to drop $$$ on a good hair-dye job, hair care and go w/ short hair, etc. wigs and weaves are becoming a lot more socially acceptable these days even for white people, go with that if you get bored (:

I couldn't imagine wearing a wig, mostly because I am just loving my hair right now. I wonder what I would look like with something out there like straight pink bob. I'd never dye my hair again so it would be the only way!

I cut my waist length curly hair just yesterday because of all the damage I had done. It looked way too pretty but only I knew it was damaged and I had to let them go. I have shoulder length now and they are pretty much damage free caused by hair straighteners. Besides I live in Canada, so the weather can take a toll on the hair too. Now that I’m in India for a while, hair is much better and sticking to my sulphate and silicone free method with conditioner washing most of the times. Hair is short now but well better to have healthy short hair than long damaged curls. I’ve always got compliments for my hair. Something I swear by is: 1. Hot organic coconut oil scalp massage every time you wash your hair. 2. Hair masks rich in protein. 3. Organic hair products that are sulphate, paraben and silicone free. 4. And treat hair with love. Be gentle and love your hair. Treat it as gently as a new born. 5. Biotin and omega 3 fatty acids for those that have brittle hair. Good luck with your hair journey.

I'm so sorry to hear that! I've had so many experiences just like that, and so many times not even direct like that but when I got compliments when I dyed or straightened my hair but when I tried my best to rock my natural hair no one said anything. It definitely hurt. I think it's really important to embrace that feeling, and accept that it's okay to feel that way and that we're beautiful the way we are. I think you look incredible with dark hair btw it looks like it suits you! Blond, red, black, white, whatever hair color you have, your amazing and if anyone disagrees then you don't need them in your life!! 💜

I desperately searched online and mainly saw protein treatments however I discovered olaplex which claims to actually restore the disulphide bonds in your hair from heat, bleaching ect.. it comes in 3 treatments and no.1 and no.2 are can only be done at a salon while no.3 is for personal use. I literally went through the exact same thing. Bleaching my hair for a year and straightening it for 3. What was even worse was my hair breaking and becoming so short, reaching only my chin. This made me turn to extensions and from there on you can imagine how that went... 1 year later I have quit all dying and straightening (except a handful of times) and my hair is still really short, especially now that I have some of my curl back. Ive always seen my curly hair as a curse but hopefully in 10 years time it will be long and beautiful and worth it

Wow! Your explanation of The Princess Diaries is honestly what I’ve been thinking about lately. I just recently switched to the curly girl method. So I started thinking about why I was so obsessed with straightening my hair. I was in middle and high school in the early 2000s, and straight hair was thing to be desired. Hence The Princess Diaries!!! Because apparently crazy curly hair equaled ugly, and straight hair equaled beautiful! Ugh! 🤦🏼‍♀️

It depends on the extent of the damage but I even notice differences day to day depending on what I'm doing. Not so much in hair growth, that takes more time and if you look at yourself everyday gets hard to notice, but more with definition and moisture. Fingercoiling and using good quality products is a great place to start!

For me, I never hated my curly hair until I was in my teens. I discovered a Japanese subculture/ underground scene known as "visual kei" and I really wanted hair like the guys in the bands I listened to (which, being Japanese, they of course had straight hair). In addition to that, people dressed in visual kei have a tendency to shave their eyebrows off, so I also did that, and I too had thick brows. I went through so much struggle with the dedication to ironing my hair, bleaching it, and using styling products just to have vkei hair. I've never grown away from the desire in the 15 years since my first exposure to it, as I still love visual kei obsessively, but I have now opted for designing my own curly versions of their hair, and I have taken inspiration from vkei artists with eyebrows so I don't have to shave mine off anymore. However, I bleached my hair pretty aggressively in December and a portion of my har won't curl and it's so terrible. Once I fix this, I think I'll keep to my natural hair as much as I can while still remaining creative with it.

Amanda Bicket yes they are totally straight no curl whatsoever. I used to straighten my hair after every time i washed it and then wear it like that for as long as i could then wash again and straighten again. Then i chopped all my hair off - i’m talking pixie cut - and since that grew out (it’s about just past my collarbones now) i have only straighten it a handful of times. But those pieces are still straight. It’s like only those got permanently straightened..and no i’ve never chemically done it just with a flat iron. I’m doomed 😂🤷🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️

If finger coiling and going silicone free doesn't help, a lot of people have had great luck with olaplex no 3. It's a disulphide bond builder and is powerful. You could apply it to only the wavy pieces. U haven't tried this myself because I don't need it but I'm suggesting since I know of at least a dozen people who sweat by it. And if you applied it only to the back, you could probably get 5 or 6 treatments out of it. Hope this helps! And please let me know if this works! 💜

I'm not really sure how to fix my hair or what I'm doing wrong :-/ I've been using silicon and sulfate free products for the past five or six months, and I haven't straightened my hair in almost two years, but my hair still looks damaged. My hair has lighter highlights (was bleached) almost a year ago and my roots have grown out a lot now. However, those sections (essentially the top of my hair) are frizzier. I'm washing my hair once a week, using a cotton t-shirt to dry/air dry/NO heat, and deep conditioning once a week. I'm at a loss -- what am I doing wrong???
@lo4568
@lo4568 6 лет назад
I feel you. I've been natural for about 8 months now. I sometimes feel just like you, I'm like "why is my hair so frizzy? Why is there no shine? Why does it look so dull?", but honestly, you just need to have patience. I didn't even straighten/dye/bleach my hair, I just used the wrong products for so many years and the wrong techniques, and my hair still doesn't look perfect. BUT: I didn't even hit the 1 year anniversary of being natural! There are people out there that needed 3 years or longer to make their hair look healthy again. So yeah, I guess both of us just need patience. Also, try to finger coil your frizzy curls with some product, or use natural hair products that claim to provide more shine. P.S.: Nobody is perfect and your curls don't have to be either.
@GynBlaise

Koro-sensei Thanks for the response! Hearing that I should be patient is actually a relief. I always worry that I'm still taking the wrong steps, or my hair has suffered some irreparable damage.
@lo4568
@lo4568 6 лет назад
Gyn Blaise Don't worry, I get that. One of the most important things I've learnt so far is to actually listen to your hair. Your hair feels dry in certain areas? Try to understand why this is the case and find a solution. Use different products, such as oils, leave ins, gels, creams, butters, sprays and see what works best for you. My hair is 3A-3B so heavy butters and creams way my hair down and make it look greasy, but I use a cream once a week to give it a nice, solid base and then I refresh with my own leave in (just mix conditioner with water and add oil). This way, I don't way it down too much, but I still provide moisture - finding that balance was a struggle I have been dealing with for quite some time. So yeah, experiment, try new things out and see what works. :3

My mom started relaxing my hair since I was 5 or 6 yrs old.... Ive been watching videos like yours for several days... you millenials are more confident than many people that i know... so im going to give it a try! Wish me luck!

I used to bleach,dye everything to my hair but now my curls are coming back to life with devacurl but the problem is that my hair is oily.. does that make sense? Lol i never heard of someone that has oily curly hair... I mean my roots are not that curly but my ends are its just how my hair is.. does anybody else have this problem? And dandruff? 😩 ugh!

That's totally normal! How long has been? When I first switched my hair was more oily for a while until it adjusted to being washed once a week. I feel clarifying might help with dandruff and flatter roots. Just don't do it too often! Let me know how it goes 💜

Amanda Bicket Its only been like a couple of weeks and my curls are good but yeah its not easy i use to have more curls on my roots but as for now i don’t have a lot of curls i hope the oilyness goes away 🌚 its so annoying and dandruff if it even is dandruff because when i try to not wash it in like two days it gets sooo itchy and i start to get painful red bumps 😭😭😞😞

I don't have much heat damage, but I've been coloring/bleaching my hair for about 10 years, and I recently decided to leave my color alone until my hair is grown out to a length I want (maybe never color again?!! Gasp) I cut a lot off Dec 2016 then a little more June 2017 because I had it colored dark (hated it after 1 month lol) and transitioned to blonde again, so my hair was/is struggling from all that. Here is to hoping my hair really starts growing long asap!

I felt the same way when I decided to never color again too! Good luck and keep me updated Sara! 💜

5 mins into your video and I felt I could identify so much, I straightened my hair for over 15 years and now it’s stringy so am trying to grow my curls out and it’s and in between stage so I feel it looks unruly but I am gonna do it. Thank you, great video

I'm so glad I never had money to go get my brows waxed frequently and also glad I am too lazy to pluck them myself. Haha. When being lazy and broke work out to your benefit XD

That's so funny Christina! So true the people that jump on the trends pay the price. Like people who buy an entire new wardrobe every season end up paying so much money for clothes whereas if you just bought clothes you like when you need them and be yourself you'd save so much money. The brows is more intense though because they could never grow back! At least you can always make more money 😂
