Today I tackle the janky and badly welded, but still extremely expensive shifter in my cheap Fast & Furious Lamborghini Murcielago, with help from Tony the Welding Jedi and a $1 bolt we bought at the hardware store!

You should of fixed it how you initially said,,, but tapping threads onto it. So the shift ball and lever split will land below the shift gate like lambo intended

As a technician i would say 12.9 was not the correct choice since it´s very hard but could be brittle especially with the excess heat from welding, it´s essentially quenched now, it could snap. Maybe you wanna anneal it now. As you said it´s tensional load that the bolt can withstand not so much the lateral. Just a thought...

No offence but stretching the content like this is crazy , cut a shaft,weld a bolt , place it back, it's like one of those commercials where they show you how complicated is to hang a picture on the wall.

A small hint to your welding Jedi: it's quite common to do the weld preparation of a round bar like a cone. However, a weld preparation like a chisel ist recommended, as is avoids the potential weld flaw in the center, as it can be gauged from the backside.

You should cover that discolouration with some gold tape. On a serious note it is good to see Tony wearing gloves when he is welding, so many RU-vid welders don't and welding is a very strong source of UV.

You should protect the instrument cluster when you're grinding metal close to, the plastic cover could de damaged with 1 single hot metal spark !

Bolts are strongest under tension. I think the original design was the face of the two pieces pushhing against each and usung the bolt for tension, it may have broken because the top part loosened and threaded part taking the bending loads. If you grind a lip on the lower part and pack it with washers so that the top piece tights against washers making the bolt under tension, I think you will make this repair very strong. The other thing, while welding close to plastic parts or where you want to avoid heat damage at the other end of part being welded, I have seen welders wrap the parts in wet rags to avoid heat mitigation away from the weld. I was worried that tig welding and grinding may damage the nylon parts in your shifter.

Hey T. When you have the interior of a car ripped out like this and you are going to be getting in and out of the car. Get your self some cheap moving blankets to through down for sitting and working on. Also helps grabs any bolts, screws or nuts you drop before they vanish forever into the body.

those in car chores, or even near volatile fluids. I have shaped cardboard boxes with a big opening, let grinds fly, welding.. spray box damp if more concerned for the intensity of sparks.

tap a thread onto the lower shift piece - could be done in place - and screw the upper piece back on; less hassle than welding

Great job, but if you'd lowered the join and therefore the weld by 5-10 mm then it would be less noticeable to the eye once the gate is on.

Keep in mind that the tensile strength of the bolt also comes from the heat treatment of the steel which is tarnished a bit with welding. that being said, it still shouldn't break.

Tony should hop on media and youtube, true masters of the craft should always be appreciated. Welding steel beams or making diamond rings doesnt matter. True mastery of a craft doesnt just come with practice you need talent and a deep understanding at what you are doing nevermind the complexity of job.

My Suggestion would be to go to Harbor Freight and get a welding blanket or 2. Those sparks can be very very damaging. and dangerous.
