Another great report, Noel. You are setting the standard for your reports rare aircraft, rear airlines off the beaten path. So you didn't have a hat in Moscow. Did you go shopping in Izhevsk? We flew on a Tu-154 and a Tu-134 during out honeymoon in Russia in 1984. Wonky seats, inedible food, instant coffee. Absolute luxury! 😊 The night train sleeper from St Petersburg to Moscow was a ride everyone should experience once in their life. 🤢

I remember taking it several times between HAV and SCU (or vice versa), when Cubana was still using them. While it was flying quite smoothly, I don't remember any tighter seat pitch ever. It was like squeezing 120 seats into a CR7. But for a short flight it wasn't that bad (as to the catering, Cubana was offering only a candy and a "refresco" - Fanta-like orange soda).

I flew on the Il-18 to Romania with Tarom in 1984 to Mamia. I was amazed that such a thing could exist. Even in 1984. Talk about asking the rear gunner for the meal. But today I would happily pay for such an opportunity today. Spent the flight looking at the props hoping they still keep spinning and the flight deck was a visible through a curtain. Love another go today.

My daughter is amused at your Siberian adventures. My wife was stationed in Berlin as a cipher officer for some years and pre the Wall used to meet Russian officers for a chat and coffee. For these reasons she was fluent in Russian but when she met her chum in Siberia said chum had to translate as the locals spoke another language. The rest of us gave up anyway, so your problems were understood.

Should try and do a video on a Tu-154. I flew on Aeroflot Moscow to Kathmandu in 1993, it was a really great plane. Coming into the stop at Sharjah we did tight 360s at what looked like only 5,000ft or so (i can judge height well as a hang glider pilot). Never known that on any other commercial flight. From the tarmac as we exited the plane the size of that beast was so impressive. The anhedral also makes it look really novel.

Izhevsk is - if you are charitable - at the extreme western edge of Siberia. SIberia really starts about another flying hour east of Izhevsk. If you board a plane in 11°C weather, dressed appropriately and land 6 hours later at -28°C, no longer really dressed for the occasion, they you know you are in Siberia. Happened to me on a Kras Air flight from Hannover to Omsk in 2005.

At first I was wondering why the retrowave music played on the background... but then I realized why when Noel said "back in time" about the cabin. That rear door looks scary in the flight. I remember flying Yak-42D in my childhood from LED to MMK and we boarded from the rear door. Quite unusual. But don't remember shutting down the 1st and the 3rd engines during the landing roll! :D Great video, by the way, nice content, thanks!

Very interesting they shut down a couple engines…I imagine to lower brake temperatures/wear. Most turbine engines I’ve flown recommended shutdown is after 3-5 minutes at idle to allow temperatures to stabilize and prevent turbine blades rubbing on the case… maybe Lotarevs are made of sterner stuff. One question. It didn't sound like the Yak uses reverse thrust. Is that correct or do they shut down engines 1 & 3 and then rely on just the braking action?

I used to fly in and out of Izvesk 4-5 times a year. In the 90’s I lived an hour north in Votkinsk. The airport has not changed a bit since 1998. There is a good museum not far from the ice slide if you are interested in the AK weapons and firearms from the 19 th century on.

@@noelphilips The town I lived in, Votkinsk was the birthplace of Tchaikovsky. It is also where the Soviet ICBMs were assembled. There is a town to the Northeast named Tchaikovsky where the Russian biathlon training center is and a hydrofoil factory. Plenty to do on a long weekend should you ever get back there.

Hi Noel, I flew to and from Bulgaria for a skiing holiday on a Balkan Airways TU144. On the way back over the mountains it fell backwards. Bricking it!

Amazing, looked freezing. I probably would have paid a bit extra to be in business but I have no idea how much extra it would have been and I guess we would have missed seeing the engines. Thanks so much for posting.

Летал 1 раз этой авиакомпанией в прошлом году. Винтаж, ретро. Пора Ижавия переходить на самолеты поновее.

Thank you! Awesome as always! Why was the return flight longer? Hope you survived the cold weather without any sniff and of cause the fish 😁

Thanks for watching! We had a strange holding pattern near Moscow which added on a very long time. I think that’s why it took so much longer.

Love the subtle commentary - must use the same caterers as British Airways? Well done - for taking us places we'd not normally get too.
