Well, this weeks vlog is kinda basic. I decided to be like all the other Mavic Pro owners and try and find out how far away my quad copter would go. I failed...or succeeded, depending on your perspective.

You would have easily made it back with 20% from that point. But better to be safe than sorry
@ChrisRollins
@ChrisRollins 7 лет назад
Ernest possibly, the head wind was only letting me get about 10-16mph and there was still 3600 ft of water between me and the quad, so in the moment it absolutely seemed impossible
@ernestabc123
@ernestabc123 7 лет назад
Im only saying this because at 3:31 you had lots of height and 34% battery and were cruising at 23mph! You would have just and just made it with 4mins flight time. That 2mins it shows you is till auto landing. But again, if I had a friends house I would have done the same. Not gonna risk £1000

haha! I definitely see your point! My inexperience with the mavic put my brain into panic mode and my estimation skills went out the window! ah well, never again (intentionally) will i do this. thanks for watching!

So glad to know I'm not the only person who's had to sit there waiting 39 minutes for a firmware update! (in my case, in a park surrounded by people and children coming up to me asking when I was going to start flying and leaving after 2 or 3 minutes of conversation after they got bored waiting). But I've learned my lesson the hard way: ALWAYS check for firmware updates before leaving home!

You did about 3 miles distance? You know your mavic will warn you if you are approaching max distance with enough juice to return right? Like everyone is saying you had enough to make it back. I tested mine at the beach and did 2 miles with 75 percent still in the battery. Take in to account I had the breeze to my back. Now coming home took more juice since it was fightng the wind. I landed with 40 percent charge. Still a good flight.
@1QKGLH
@1QKGLH 5 лет назад
Not stupid at all. But here's my thoughts. You flew to a distance or about 16K feet. But that's the distance in a straight line. You flew a kinked line, could have easily added 1,000 feet. Then when you returned, it might have helped to drop some altitude to get out of the wind. Entertaining though. Thanks for posting. I'll go check out more of your videos.

Lesson Learned brother never take it out of line of sight
@gedgar2000
@gedgar2000 7 лет назад
With a little Mavic, it's effectively out of sight (For flying orientation) in a couple hundred yards. FPV and the GPS map give you all the info you need and then some. It's a lot easier than trying to fly via line of sight a symmetric spec in the sky. The FAA is nuts. I have TONS of time in a P3P, and have pushed it, lost signal and had it come home MANY times. I REALLY WOULD fly that thing out to 10,000', turn off the remote, and bet $2,000 it will land real close to where it took off. Anyone who wants to bet can message me. You'll lose! The Mavic has done well, but the DJI Go4 App is always dying and needing to be restarted on my Android phone. And I've read about a couple fly aways. BUT I'd Zbet $500 the Mavic comes home if you completely turn off the remote, and will land real near where it lifted off.

@@gedgar2000 I take my Mavic out to an indicated 3300 metres REGULARLY, and I do manual orbits. If I engage RTH it returns and lands on the 80cm landing pad. If you could do the same with a rifle any army in the world would have you as a sniper.

Just a note for next time, don't return to home in sport mode. You want your RPM to be somewhere between 4,000 to 6,000. Sport mode is just so inefficient because it's in the 8000 to 9000 RPMs to move the drone at those speeds. Your over all distance would of been much more if you stayed in gps more the mode the entire time.
@ChrisRollins
@ChrisRollins 7 лет назад
Stephen Dopler you're absolutely correct! I've learned that now after about 50 flights with the mavic.
@sheldonandres
@sheldonandres 7 лет назад
I'm not too sure about that, because it looks like he didn't return back in sport mode, but went out in sport mode... From my experience, which I could be wrong, I seem to actually get farther with sport mode than if I'm just in regular mode...
@davidhole8229
@davidhole8229 7 лет назад
Stephen Dopler was talking to another guy that did a flight test and on the same day n weather with fresh batterys for both test flghts he got 2% more drain on sport mode to do 1km away
@sheldonandres
@sheldonandres 7 лет назад
Hmmm... I will have to do some more testing, could have been the cold that affected it or because it had the return to home to ascend quite a bit before coming back... but mine, the farthest I made it on regular mode was about 3.5 kms or 2.17 miles on regular mode before it wanted to return home because of low battery...

I think you made the safe decision of landing on a good spot. You only had 13% battery left when you landed. Perhaps if you continued returning it would have dived in the water. So, I think you were right to play safe and were lucky, as a bonus, to be able to land it in a place where you could retrieve it. I support your choice 100%.

I know this is over a year old but adding that location and Geomagnetics makes a huge difference with range. I have flown a P3Pro at "noisy" locations where signal gets weak at less than 2,000-3,000Ft distance but I made it to 20,070 Ft one time where location and conditions were perfect. I could have gone further that day (still had both RC and video signal) but I turned around at 20K because the battery was at 46%. My plan was to turn around for the downwind leg at 48% but when it passed 17K and then 18K I just had to push it to 20,000 😜 Advertised range on P3Pro is 3.1 miles so it's still hard to believe it made it 3.8 miles with "no mods or range extenders" (even more shocking that the video worked that far out) but again the location AND conditions were obviously perfect that day. Battery was 6% when I landed and hit 5% before I turned it off so yes I timed it closer than I would have liked, and yes it took a lot of Up-Stick to keep it from auto-landing once it hit 10%. Hands were shaking during that last 5% and I have zero desire to ever try that again.

I feel your nervous pain. I've only had mine about a week and each day I'm willing myself to fly a little farther with it and get more comfortable with it. But it's stressful and you have to really trust that it's going to perform as expected. But that pit in my stomach when it's a mile away tells me I'm not really trusting it just yet.
@bBrain
@bBrain 7 лет назад
You so could of made it home heh, If you were much further away, you might not of been able to remote land it, it would of been safer to pick your landing spot from about tree tops height, You then set your home position to the drone location (so if it loses signal while landing, it's home location is it's landing location, it will RTH even if in auto land mode, I've tested it) then do auto land, had you been a little further away, you would of lost signal just below tree tops and it would of RTH on you, the lake helped you not lose signal. Practice a emergency landings, I teach any new pilot this. But good job saving it none the less!
@JeffRemasPhotography
@JeffRemasPhotography 7 лет назад
If you were in P mode and the drone was flying 40+ mph away from you, it should have been obvious that the return flight would be much slower due to a return head wind which was, in-fact true. This is sort of like planning a scuba dive except you use battery instead of air. Nice video btw.

When it did return to home it took it out of sport mode you should have cancel rth and back to sport mode and would have made it easy or it was just too windy must have been going with wind there and against the wind on way back.

Oh dude, read my prior comment. You got used and abused by something I haven't seen discussed, but have noticed myself. DJI LIMITS THE MAXIMUM GROUND SPEED TO ABOUT 42 MPH! With a tailwind, you WON"T show anything faster than 42 mph! YOU FLEW OUT WITH MORE THAN A 15 MPH TAILWIND!! Worse, there is no easy way to determine this from the telemetry! The GPS GROUND speed is what is shown by the "Horizontal Speed" indication on the screen. THIS BEING LIMITED BY DJI TAKES AWAY CRITICALLY VALUABLE INFORMATION, SPECIFICALLY THE VALUE OF A TAILWIND COMPONENT. You can only infer this from the Horizontal Speed reading COMING HOME when your tailwind became a headwind! It gets to around 25 mph, sometimes a lot less. I see you still had it in sports mode, so the amount below 42 mph is your headwind at the time. YOU DON'T GET THE TAILWIND SPEED ADDED TO THE MAVIC'S ROUGHLY 40 MPH TOP SPEED. Which is why you didn't see 42 + 15 = 67 mph on the outbound leg, and instantly say, "I must have a big tailwind!" Which is cruel! When you see 42 mph, you are either in still air, or have a tailwind. How STRONG a tail wind? I don't think you can tell from the available telemetry data.

My Mavic with the latest firmware appears to be limited to a little over 40mph GROUND SPEED. In other words, going into a 20mph HEADWIND (say) the GPS speed (Horizontal Speed) will indicate 20mph. 40 - 20 = 20 easy math. With a 20mph TAILWIND (as in coming back, say). The GPS speed (Horizontal Speed in the GO 4 App) will only show 41mph or so. NOT 40 + 20 = 60. So DJI has a GPS based speed limiter in the Mavic firmware which only knows about GROUND SPEED!! In my P3P and P4, it has no GPS speed limit -- that I've seen because a tailwind will boost the horizontal speed indication to the max speed + wind speed. As you'd expect. NOTE: Even though you won't get the ground speed that you lost on the way out, if unwisely in a tailwind, you WILL come home on way less battery because to reach the maximum ground speed (say 40mph for the Mavic) takes much less battery power.
@gedgar2000
@gedgar2000 7 лет назад
People need to lighten up and cut you some slack. IMHO. OK, so I don't think you had enough experience to be so aggressive. Also, the manual specified range is under magic perfect conditions that you won't see, and doesn't factor in things like making it back on one battery. The tailwind out and the headwind back look significant based on displayed speeds. This is a screw-up that murders your range. BUT I STILL THINK YOU HAD HAD THE JUICE TO HAVE MADE IT BACK DUDE! Not by a lot, but enough. I think Sport Mode will HELP your range in a stiff headwind. You probably want a little slower in a tailwind. You got some good luck, recovered your Mavic, and gained some valuable experience. You screwed up a bit, BUT YOU DON'T DESERVE TO BE RUDELY INSULTED ABOUT IT. IGNORE THE ASSHOLES! They're just jealous of your car. LOL

Chris, it looked liked it was going to be close, but I think you would have made it back above the critical 10% autoland battery value. But if you were in doubt, and had a great spot picked out, better safe than sorry. One CRITICAL thing I think I noticed is that if you were at max. Sport Mode speed, going out and coming back (from the speeds shown), it looks like you flew out with light tailwind, back with a slight headwind. THE BIGGEST NO NO! On a pretty calm wind day, I made 14,000', still with OK radio signal strength, but thankfully turned home. I cut it SO close that I was at 10% and landing and JUST made the edge of my front lawn! Phew. Dumb luck! Just as an aside, I don't think full forward Sport Mode speed is the best range speed. ESPECIALLY with a tailwind. I used full speed out and back though, maybe screwing up my range a little. ANY further, and I'd have lost my cool bird, and would have been in mourning for weeks. LOL

Why didn't you take control. of it and bring it out of RTH?? You had enough time but it flew too slow. Also understand that moving that gimbal all around will eat battery too.You made the right choice to bring it down as it would have landed itself at 10%. Be careful to NEVER go below 15% unless its a situation like this. Ive had and seen where packs dropped from 14-15% to 10 percent in 30 seconds. These lipos get really fussy below 15%

Hindsight is 20/20 but you could have made it back if you had continued straight back. Also plan out your flights (long ) and it becomes real easy. As far as 20 min flying time..? Id Question that even at sport mode. I get 23/4 min easy in sport. Obviously wind strength and direction is a factor.

Someone said it already and I agree. I have no $ involved here but your video had my heart pumping and adrenaline pumping. I guess I'd hate to see a magnificent bird like the Mavic lost in the water. I'm just a beginner with a 3 Standard but someday I hope I can upgrade to a drone like the Mavic. I have a finance manager and she's frowns on buying expensive man toys. I subbed as well. Happy Flying.

The wind impacts the range drastically. Here is a movie with no battery mod, 14km flight and 52% battery left at the end of the flight: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aahJ9VoGbH4.html

It's a medical fact...BP (battery panic) has a direct effect on your BP 😱 Nice save.....

If you trying to preserve as much battery charge, you definitely should NOT continue the flight at nearly 400ft, but instead, should be descending as you were returning home. The drone would then be flying through less turbulent air, and through winds of slower speeds. Someone could maybe shed some physics on this, but the air pressure also decreases with altitude thus I imagine less lift generated by the props, at the same time less drag when moving in horizontal motion, would be good if someone did some mathematics here...

GREAT Save man!!! you are not an idiot! You just learned a few things... Looks like going out you might have had a tail wind and coming home you had a headwind. On range flights always and try outbound with a head wind and then keep the tail wind as your secret weapon on the way back. I also noticed you did not fly straight out but sure did fly straight back! Good job again!

Dude, I watched your video without sound because I am at work but......I have tears down my eyes from laughing at your video. I lost signal of my mavic in a park before and I thought I would lose it in the trees on a bad landing. The other time, I made it back home on 2% battery. I was laughing at this video because it actually happened to me! lesson learned. lol

HAHA! You earned my subscription. Watching this made me nervous for you man. Almost bought this last night on amazon but had it in my cart too long. Was ready for 2 day shipping and someone snatched it. Do you recommend it?

I am glad you got it back. I am buying a Mavic Pro soon and I personally won't try that because just my luck I won't get it back and I sure won't be able to afford another one. I enjoyed your video.

I wish I had balls like this. If you fly just little further, you won't be able to see it at all and I start getting really nervous. It's like you let $1000 fly around and are hoping it to come back....

Good decision making I'd say. I'd have been worried too, it's such an expensive toy, but you landed safely rather risking losing power over someone's car or house and you got your mavic back safely. Good result

at like 7000 ft or 5000 ft could you have taken control and put it in sport mode and flew it back manually to your point ? I think if you would have done that you would of had heaps of battery left just saying as I've done this similar thing with my phantom 4

wow I am waiting for my Mavic now but don't think I will ever get to that level of confidence to fly that far. LOL up till now been flying a lot of "toy" models ranging from $69 to several hundred dollar drones. And only lost one so far. great video thanks

Almost exactly 1 year later, you upped the "idiot" bar and crashed it at 70MPH. New subscriber though! So there is that.

Always fly away into the wind, so you have that tail wind to bring you home quickly. Also when flying into the wind, drop altitude as windspeed is probably lower at lower altitudes.

I felt that moment of relief when you manage to land the drone safely at your friends backyard. It's a thrilling misadventure that is not life threatening but I felt the agonizing moment when you were finding a safe and recognisable spot to save your drone. I felt like I'm invoved as well in this video clip. Good one. Cheers

Yeah, totally would have made it if you kept flying in a straight line directly home. I'd be stressed out too though, especially when it starts beeping like crazy.

Oh, sorry, but in spite of the cruel DJI Ground Speed limit, which is why you didn't make it home really easily. You still had it made.

The Mavic does all the calculations to get home but when it turns and heads for home u have to stay off the sticks and let it do that magic of RTH. But! You probably know that by now judging by the date of this video.

Great thinking landing it at a friends house. That's actually pretty clever you could spot a house from overhead.

God man that Drone is bad to the bone. That thing flew 4 miles like it was nothing. They make parabolic reflectors for the Phantom 4 antennas. Maybe it would work on the Mavic. I am going to buy one of these in Feb. Waiting on a little more cash I want to get like 4 batteries for it so I can fly for long bouts of time.

I don't think you should say you are an idiot Chris ! Life is a series of lessons, errors are a part of those lessons ! I'm nearly 70, and life can be harsh , keep on the straight and narrow...... you will learn many things !

The part that gets me most is people flying them beyond LOS and expecting nothing but rainbows and unicorns in the end. But you nearly always hear the panic in their voice towards the end.
