I tried following an 18th century hair tutorial, as put down in James Stewart's 1782 book "Plocacosmos; or the whole art of hairdressing". It was... Interesting :')
Read Plocacosmos here: archive.org/details/b28755674
The hairstyling guide starts on page 246

My name is Lucy, I'm a Dutchwoman here to offer an alternative approach to beauty.
On this channel I do mostly hair tutorials where I show you how to braid, pin and style your own hair. I recreate hairstyles from movies, tv shows or history and I regularly come up with my own, which I love to share with you!
I really enjoy diving into history to find out how women went about their beauty and dressing rituals in days past. Vintage and history-themed videos are my little passion project.
You'll find a bit of lifestyle content here as well, ranging from cozy chats over a cup of tea (my beloved Tea Time videos) to personal vlogs and home & interior videos.
Enjoy browsing!
Love,
Lucy

For anyone wondering how I got this out: the teasing wasn't that big of a problem, I was able to comb that out quite easily. The pomade was a different story: I had to shampoo 6 times to get that out 😅 My hair isn't damaged as far as I can tell 😁 Oh, and for the cushion: I know what it is, I used one in most of my other 18th century hairstyling videos. It's his description of where and how to apply it that's absolutely incomprehensible 😂

So from what my mother's told me, the cushion is a actual cushion that woman would put in their hair. Like a tiny wool pillow

I’m really glad your hair is okay!!! I have read that straight hair doesn’t damage easily, so that’s a plus for straight hair! (PS at least on Camera, it doesn’t look terrible! Maybe you could get another person and you do the hairstyle on someone else for a second attempt/personal success? I would be interested in watching that!)

@skankysnek5300 4 года назад
@@harajukuhoe9734 actually in the 1700s it was very rare for people to use wigs, many people did use hairpieces though to pad out their hair. People also washed daily and would change their underlayers as much as possible, they were also made of linen so sweat and dirt would be absorbed away from the skin. And while people did use powder on their hair it was for styling purposes and cleanliness, powder and hair wax were used to make the hair mouldable and absorb the natural hair oils.

The pomade and powder was used to grease the hair to prevent royalty and rich folks from having head lice. The grosser the hair, the least amount of lice. It was rampant and supposedly brought in by rats and practically consumed the poor... Which is what caused the plague If I'm remembering correctly.

It is messy but the volume really is how it looks in 18th century portraits. Closer in fact than I've ever seen on TV or anything like that - so that must be the authentic methods that have created that effect. I dont suppose they ever do the original techniques in film because hair is one of those things that always has shades of whatever is fashionable at the time rather than being truly period.
@ktdoty9921

@alechiavassa 5 лет назад
That really bothers me about period dramas. It applies to hair, make up, eyebrows...
@hollyblue28
@hollyblue28 5 лет назад
Yes I think that's absolutely why they do it. Aesthetics change a surprising amount, plucking hairlines back for example would probably look really odd to modern eyes. But sometimes the hairdo's are so obviously modern, or have made no real attempt to look period that I find it a bit distracting. Other productions strike a good balance, especially with wigs and hairpieces of getting something that looks fairly authentic but still appeals to modern viewers. But as a history and costume buff it's really interesting to see the methods that created the authentic hairstyles in action and see how the result looks so different to reproductions using modern styling tools and techniques. I really enjoyed watch this and appreciate the effort it took to do (and get undo!!).

Reading the text, it looks like your main mistake was in failing to apply eel's fat to your hair. Or maybe you got angry at the wrong things and damaged your constitution. Or maybe it's your mom's fault for not washing your neck daily with cold water. (Sorry, I'm having way too much fun with the weird shit in that book.)

Hidealittle Actually that’s true! Wearing underwear to bed can cause yeast infection because they hold in heat and if they aren’t cotton then moisture will also be there, that combination is a breeding ground for yeast (and bacteria but not as common). You want to let that area breathe and get some air some point.

What I thought was cool was how this showed the evolution of hair curling. We tend to think of pin curls as difficult, but those 18th century ladies would have loved to have had bobby pins and setting lotion! And then bringing in the curling iron you showed another step in the evolution. But really they're all about achieving the same thing...big gorgeous voluminous hair. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

@EilsTheDaydreamer
@EilsTheDaydreamer 5 лет назад
This was really interesting! I think the powder/pomade combination makes it look so much more authentic, and the curling and teasing does create a very different look to other 18th century hairstyles I've seen that use more padding than teasing.
