Hidden amidst the towering peaks and lush valleys lies a forgotten piece of history-an abandoned Northern Pacific railway that once connected communities and transported dreams. Today, we’re embarking on a journey to explore this ghostly line, uncover the stories it holds, and appreciate the beauty of nature reclaiming what was once its own. By the mid-20th century, however, the allure of the railway began to fade. With the rise of automobiles and the development of highways, this once-bustling line fell silent, leaving behind a network of rusted tracks and stories waiting to be told.
As we walk, notice how nature is slowly but surely reclaiming the land. The railway ties, once a symbol of human achievement, are now embraced by sprawling roots and vibrant plants. This is one you don't want to miss!
Thank you and see you on the trail friends.

The building. I worked one summer for the Denver Rio Grand gandy dancer, 6 foot bar or a 12 pound spike maul. 1971 Lived in old RR cars date plaque on the side 1909 or older. Bunks in some,, long tables in others, kitchen in another. They looked just like your small building. Service building for the old RR through there,, an older car with the rolling trucks removed. If my guess is correct the car was built about the turn on the last Century, 1900 IF you get back there and look,, the old cars had a manufacture date plaque on the side of each down low, so they would have been 4 or 5 feet off the ground when up on wheels and the rails.

Thank you, this is good to know stuff the books don’t tell you. That’s hard work, much respect to you. Thank you for building America. I love this history but at the same time wonder why there’s no more nice stuff like this in use. Bummer honestly.. I wasn’t sure but looked very similar to an old car like you said. The thin tin trim on the top made me almost certain. Thank you for sharing, super cool! 👍👍👋

@@MountainWestProductions One thing you must always keep in mind,, "They don't build them like they used to." Is actually untrue. Houses. I am a builder, and by my previous comment you know I've been at this a long time. "They don't build,," Uh No. All the crap fell down long ago. Only the better built, engineered, still survive. So we THINK they used to do it better. No. The good part. Time has acted as a sieve, filtering out all the worst, leaving good examples of what does work. I have worked on residences as old as 1680, Massachusetts, and as new as the passive solar super insulated of my engineering I will be building this winter, Arizona. Not a lick of sense,, still working.

@@Sailor376also interesting thought here it’s true yeah definitely is. See the thing about building today I think that gets misconstrued is style and individuality. Architecture for the working man right? I feel like unless you build yourself it takes a mountain and a lot of securities to build something custom in a subdivision or something common I.e development. Houses then were cookie cutter and standard as well but there was an amount of pride and sourced furnishings that just blow your mind right out of a sears catalog. The stairs, banisters, mantles and windows had style and choice. Craftsmanship a lot is factory line now unless you have a lot a lot to spend ya know?

@@MountainWestProductions Oh I very much know and agree with you. Two sides of that coin as well. A Sears house, catalog, cookie cutter, prefab,, worked on two of those over the years. Extremely well built, engineered,,, there can be a benefit to cookie cutter. But,,,,,there can be a hundred and the low bidder supplied the material and the low bidder assembled them all and the worst of the worst are what they are calling 'tofu' houses in China, Houses, apartment buildings, roads and bridges,, that last two years and fall down. Building well, brings an internal satisfaction,,, which is the greater reason I dig a ditch or build a pit toilet. Laughing,, although having the structure surviving far beyond my meager years,, well, at this point,, that is not going to be difficult to do. I can put a lifetime warranty on a roof,, knowing full well it will last at least 5 years. laughing,, I only have a couple left. Lifetime warranty can be pretty short. And I am laughing. I've been to see the elephant,, wanna do it all again,,,, as I said, not a lick of sense.

They have bicycle type vehicles to ride those rails, but I am sure that you probably already know about them. Much better than walking for quite some distance.

These views were amazing. It would be nice if they could fix this and reopen for those four trains that come through many areas. I think a lot of people would pay to ride and see these amazing views.

The train car turned cabin, reminded me of re-purposed shipping containers used today. Maybe it was used as a cabin for hunting? 🤔 Keep it up mate. Super interesting & much appreciated 👍 G'Day from Australia 🐨🦘

That ladder was used by someone who was working the rock, like they do in the old mines. Maybe they were looking for crystals.

Unless you have verified that the abandoned line at Homestake pass is actually Northern Pacific, I thought that the abandoned line was Milwaukee route abandoned in the1970s, apiece of the electrified Milwaukee route still exists at Deerlodge, MT at the Grant Kohres ranch historical site. There are still cattle cars on the track.
@MountainWestProductions
@MountainWestProductions 17 часов назад
This was a Northern Pacific line I’m certain. Milwaukee ran a different route. I’ll research it a bit more as far as Milwaukee goes but the northern pacific had this exclusively as a passanger line to serve Butte and Whitehall during the mining boom. The rail shut down in the late 70’s after the mines started closing up in butte. I’ll also investigate the deer lodge line here shortly, didn’t know about the cattle cars!!

@@MountainWestProductions My bad…..Milwaukee ran over Pipestone pass. I used to commute to college from Whitefish to Bozeman in the late 60s using old Highway 10 over Homestake pass then in the early 70s same commute over Pipestone on I 90. Got my passes mixed. I was a museum tech in 2000 for Grant Kohres ranch so if you take a tour of the Main house say hi to Kleopatra in the parlor.
@MountainWestProductions
@MountainWestProductions 17 часов назад
@fredmanicke5078 ah gotcha, yes the Milwaukee traveled rough country but suitable rough country, the line capitalized on freight and passenger movement from what I understand. Along with a few luxury cars I think kind of promotional..? But I believe the pacific northern connected the entire country first? Or maybe great northern. There’s a wild Hollywood drama (Hell on wheels) that depicts the construction of the line with a cool protagonist as the main character. Small world, much respect to a man of history. I will say hi, thank you!👍
