I Forced Myself to Learn Blender - 100 Hour Progress

Don't learn Blender. It will consume your life. I spent so much time learning to 3d model and animate in Blender. I have always wanted to perform and act in my live streams, and after watching Dr. Disrespect perform in his Blender scenes, I knew I had to learn. So let me know, was it worth it for me to learn Blender? Should I keep making blender scenes as a beginner?

@@AdamBaird I'm just getting started switching over to Blender from Maya 3D and its been a few years. I gotta say, its bizarre how much is different between the programs. Both are super complex, but blender seems to be a lot more user friendly. Some friends of mine and I are working on a game together and I thought I could help with some creative inspiration. Having some 3D Modelling/Animation experience does help, but it is taking some time getting reacclimated. I look forward to seeing what you create!

6:00 in and it hurts me to hear that nobody in any of those threads told you that you can recover lost files by going: file>External Data>Find Missing Files and selecting the folder where your textures were stored. Also, a psa to make it so you can move your files without corrupting everything: File>External Data> Automatically Pack Resources. This way any texture files you add will be saved as a copy in the data of your .blend file.

As someone who's been modelling and texturing for well over 10 years, this is quite a phenomenal progression in just 100 hours. You should feel very proud of yourself :) As a tip though, if getting further into 3D is something you want to do, it would pay you early on to switch Blender's navigation style to "maya" in the user preferences. This is because that's what nearly every other piece of software uses as it's standard navigation. And since you might want to get into advanced texturing with Substance, advanced rendering with Marmoset or advanced cloth creation with Marvelous Designer, breaking the muscle memory early on it much easier than trying to do it after months or years of getting used to it (first hand experience there). Top work!

@welly4907

you should not do this because it will make it 100 times harder to follow tutorial and allot of the setting in blender will be harder to find. just get convertible with blender because learning how to move in the viewport takes 20 second to leurn and 1 hour to get used too
@AdamBaird

@TheShift1313
@TheShift1313 2 года назад
I work in about 5 different software packages all with different navigation. You can adapt. At least blender lets you pick left click vs right click now! If you want to do it professionally and you hop between software then configure everything to your level of comfort. I work mainly in CAD and going to blender the pan vs rotate keys are switched but after a fumble or two the muscle memory kicks in. Amazing progress in 100hours!

Amazing job man! As someone picking up Blender myself, you definitely seem to have a knack for learning this type of stuff - or maybe it's how you learn and decide what to practice. You document exactly what steps you use in the video (shapes, complex shapes, light, etc...). It would be great to know what tutorials if any you used too.
@AdamBaird

I didn't really watch any RU-vid videos. I just had a very specific goal so I only looked up videos that helped me achieve that. Best of luck! I know how stressful the process can be.

Thanks Adam - I've not tried Blender but much of your "learning curve" was familiar having learnt Sketchup in the last year and now tackling Unity. Thanks for sharing - you should definitely keep going - 3d modelling is a valuable skill for which the demand will continue to increase.

Found this video encouraging and inspiring for those of us getting started with Blender/3D. Short term my goal is to focus on character design, modeling and animation, but after doing some basic tutorials and learning of environments, lighting and stuff I realize there's lots more to Blender than you realize. Plus I've got an additional motivation: after 25 years in web development, I'm eager to switch to something else to put food on the table and I think 3d is my ticket, as demand will likely increase over time. Thanks for sharing 😀

Blender has a missing material/file search function in menu File/External Data/Find Missing Files. Then just navigate where you think it was, even if it is an entire drive as it will iterate through the folders in your file structure. I also learned the hard way when I started to work with blender. This function is massive time saver.

Great video, and final render looks epic! A shame the chess overlay covers the most detailed part. As someone new to 3D (~15 hours in), I'm wondering if you learned better by making your own scene and searching for solutions when encountering issues, or watched/read tutorials first and attempted to implement it into your scene after?
@AdamBaird
@AdamBaird 2 года назад
Thanks! Yeah the chessboard covers most of the detail, But the board isn't always up. I work best by doing and fixing along the way. That means a lot of redoing though which can be frustrating. I am glad that you liked the video!
