I would love to see a comparison video of you making more complex axes like this but with both the new way of doing it with grinders and the needle gun, and the old way of doing it without. Also, I love your content!! 😊
Haha always thought they’ve cut it in with the tip of the axe [probably both] but never seen/heard about this before! Have those markings in my house and could reuse the old clay with new one as in respect of the elders work. So theres a lot lerklining ongoing at home [also conserves the wood/ avoids the impact of harming insects].. ☺️👍
nice axe there Nils, have never sen one of those axes, i kinda hurt when you did cut away parts of the edge of the axe but now i understand the purpose for it. funny thumbnail as well XD your neighbor Kristoffer ;)
Before watching the video I'm guessing busting cables or chains Audio Great I can hear instructions and great relaxing tunes and believe that thing is for busting something Thanks for showing Thanks for the explanation and it sounds like a smart use for something that I've never heard about Thanks again
A very interesting axe, never seen anything like it before. Great build and really liked the choice of music. As for suggestions, try making a “speed “ axe as used in wood chopping competitions. Regards from Down Under.
I've not watched it yet, so my guess is those notched areas keep the axe from penetrating too deep into what you are splitting. I'm not sure yet why, but maybe it's for splitting wet wood so your axe doesn't get stuck? Nils, I just subscribed with this RU-vid account I'm trying to build up. This is Andy From Beaverton. This account is mainly videos of wildlife closeups. Lots of hawks.
Huh. What a peculiar axe! I almost want to say that it looks like it is made for marking or starting joinery, well, joints! Interested to see why it looks like this.
I would have made the slots semi-circular instead of square, to eliminate stress risers in the corners. There is a high chance of one of the teeth breaking off during use.

I rounded them out with a small diamond file just before heat treatment. Was a bit nervous tbh but it all went fine.
I thought that ax was for if you're chopping wood and you miss and hit your toes, it'll go in between and you won't cut them off. But I'm from South Philly. What do I know?
About that press punch... Is that made out of orvar? Since you punch the holes quite quickly it only makes sense the punches are made out of something that doesn't bend nor tempers any further amirite?
You have mad skills .the objects you create are so beautiful and practical. i have a summer house near arvika but i don't go there much anymore because the trip is too long , but i love it there . I live in Germany but don't speak deutsche so when i want to hear people speak english i go to Sweden 😂 Swedish people speak better english than the English .
Well if that don't beat all! Gotta admit I was at a loss on it's purpose. Now I know and it makes total sense. Have to admit I'm taken w the effects left by the needle scaler too Blessings aboundant Crawford out 🙏🏻🔥⚒️🧙🏼♂️
I guessed a stone sculpturing axe; but I wouldn't have guessed to make grooves in wood for clay. Shouldn't the cutting edge be straight for that? Still; verrrrrry impressive axe; and very impressive video. Congrats.
you probably want the irregularity and straight corners to really hold the clay/plaster with less cracking. also it is possible that the notches help prevent splitting the wood and accidentally removing too much wood.
Not my favorite axe :P but I love all the forging videos none the less.... Had no idea what it was used for which was also a reason to watch the video. And nice Stache ;) lol Currently growing mine out :P

Thanks for watching! I think everyone should get a mustasch.
A common blend is: one half linseed oil, one half pine tar and one half turpentine. (Yes, I meant to write just that. The point with the three halves is that it isn't that precise) This mixture is called "Roslagsmahogny" (Rosagen is a coastal region often associated with folkesy ol' fishermen types , and it basically means poor man's mahogany) It gives a lovely brown tint to lighter colored woods, but it doesn't get too sticky and it doesn't smell as strongly as tar alone. The finish retains it's transparency but becomes opaque with several layers. It does not oxidize in sunlight quite as fast as linseed oil alone.. I'm not sure this is what is used here, but it looks like that. ("Oh, but I love the smell of tar!" -No, what you love, is a hint of tar. Trust me on this one.)
The small ones uses less gas. So use that when I am only making one axe. We are currently working on a one burner version of Njord which is something I really look forward to :)
I will never understand why people put music to their videos while they're trying to talk . you don't need the music bro just explain what you're doing get rid of the music
