Why's that? He bought the items low, in exchange for having to wait for them, and sold them high to people who didn't want to wait. He made a profit and they got their items quicker. Capitalism working as intended.

You're flipping the wrong items, flip items that aren't easy to get hold of and therefore there aren't a large amount of in the economy, items that people will need for certain tasks (quests, clues etc...). You can also look into updates to the game and how these updates may affect certain items in a good way and these can be good investments too.

I think the MMO economy is a good example of the time vs money paradigm. The values are different than real world currencies ofc, but the principle is the same. Time is money. People will over-pay in real life to get something quickly. People are also willing to sell items for cheap in order to convert them into cash. Patient people can make good profit but they "pay" for it with their time to learn and find these profits. I don't think the currency is worthless either. It is simply a reflection of how much time someone is willing to spend.
