This for me sounds like a form of familial abuse. The matriarch of the family has told this story to exert control over her progeny and it became more embellished over time. Instead of giving genuine reasons why some behaviours are undesirable, she resorted to invoking a deity/bogeyman. In fact the protagonist says that it was just one of the many stories she told about sinning and, since they would be exposed to these stories from childhood they would become internalized and fester and eventually some of them would have a psychotic break as adults. Since this story resonated with the protagonist the most, and his uncle, this is the one they experienced. I think that, having heard his uncle's version and said uncle's subsequent demise into alcoholism and death, it triggered this story to the surface again. That's my take anyway, and it doesn't make the story less horrific for the person going through it. The evil was in the grandmother, and it is entirely possible that she was brought up with the same stories. Another great narration!

About 2 nights ago, I dreamed that I was walking up a flight of stairs, hearing the most beautiful choir and holding someone's hand. Just as I got to the door and was about to open it, I got a text from the person I was holding hands with and woke up. I was going to write a story about it, but I guess I don't need to now lol.

You are my FAVORITE narrator man..I've told you that before, but I legit look forward to your stories..its your voice and your selection of stories and your consistency of uploading I know it take a alot of work with editing, but im so thankful. This was a really good one. One way to see it is as a psychological allegory, "God" is an alter or a superstructure/higher self of this other mental compartment, the Alice in Wonderland-like descent is shifting into that other mental space, the shrieking bird is an aggregate of buried memories or a hidden truth. He can't understand the way it speaks, perhaps he does not want to understand, it brings him torment so he silences and buries it over and over. Yet he keeps finding himself right back where he began. It also reminds me of a dream I had when I was 2 or 3. I can still remember it like it was yesterday, like some part of me never left. I was walking down these flights of cement stairs, the walls and ceiling were cement. Every flight of stairs eventually6 came to a landing the same width as the stairs, where the direction would reverse for the next flight. At every landing there was a fluorescent tube light with a metal wire cage around it. I remember thinking it was strange that I was so high up and walking so easily. It felt like I was underground. I descended, down, down, down into the depths. Finally I came to a mid size open room, with a hole in the wall. I step through the hole, I'm in a sort of cave with a raised pathway in the center and darkness on either side. There are faint colored rainbow-like arcs over this path, spaced maybe 20 meters apart. I can faintly see the walls on either side occasionally, but cannot see a ceiling. I get to the end of the pathway and just remember finding something there. It might have been a shimmering orb, might have been a bright light, that part is hazier. I remember waking up in my crib and looking around like where am I. I grabbed onto the top and climbed over, saw my vision flip, and landed flat on my back. There was no pain, I got up and went to my parent's room. I also included stairways in a story I kind of "wrote"/created. The character repeatedly finds itself outside on a bright summer day at a long set of cement stairs. Keeps trying to ascend, but can never get there. They find it's just a mural painted on cement. The stair opens up into an abyss and they fall through. And so on. Eventually the way out is found, what was needed was to go down below the structure that this part takes place in/around. There is a similar descent into another world. Very interesting story, maybe these sorts of recurring symbols in all of us mean something, like eg Jung's dream interpretation.

Oh, Uncle Glen can't tell that story, but Grandma This-Is-How-They-Peel-Your-Face-Off-In-Hell gets free range to hold story time with the kids? That doesn't sound fair

Thanks for another amazing story. Every time you said Uncle Glenn I thought of my own Uncle. He's my favorite Uncle, despite not being blood kin. He's Dad's blood-brother and the most goofy person on the surface, but the demons of alcohol abuse and some poor life choices sit below. He's sober 20 years and even without drunk antics he's the life of the party and a joy to be with. Slightly cranky, but he's family so it works.

Thanks to this man here sleep is so much easier now a days been listening to you for just about a year and a half and in that time my motivation my life and my soul has gotten brighter everyday . I started with your story about the guy that travels from state park to state park and from the first words I knew I had found the channel I was looking for. I had to finish that story the next day because I fell asleep but at that point in time I had no been able to sleep a whole night in months. Holy bajesus. I've been listening to creepypastas daily for well over 10 years, and in all that time i don't recall a single story that was any semblance of scary. Its just great writing. That there my friend, oh that there was a punch scary. Not in a look in the corner dark or what was that sound. That story is on an all-time list. In no particular order but the side of the internet we weren't supposed to see (nature's temper), the devil's game(mr creepypasta/or Otis jiry) and now the bird stairs. These 3 are the best stories over ever heard read. I've told you easily a dozen times but it's never rang truer. That attention to detail and omg the story selection. definitely a pasta to scare an overly religious person i'd say. honestly the thought of screaming birds would be disturbing had it not been for purinharumaki, which often features screaming penguins in its cartoon humor. That's all i could think of when the stairway was there.

These are things that help take my mind off My life which fell apart s few years ago. These stories are told so well they transport me like I'm seeing the whole thing like a movie in my mind's eye which brings me peace and Joy being bipolar it's important to calm the racing thoughts and this channel has literally saved myself several times when I was having thoughts.....

First I wanna make it perfectly clear that this was a great story and I found it immensely enjoyable! I wish I had even a fraction of the imagination and talent this author does. Oh what an awesome story! So creative, well written, and wonderfully narrated. The imagery in the writing was so vivid! I was repeatedly told by my aunty/grandmother, etc., as a small child to repent my sins or I would die a thousand deaths in the fiery pits...blah blah. I was 5 or 6. Not much to repent. It was the start of my journey to agnosticism.

i really enjoy listening to you read this story. i feel like i am with you right there fully seeing and hearing everything, i felt as creeped out as the uncle and as fearful as the boy, but as far as God waiting down stairs no lol the devil was waiting.

The stairs going down are not a stairway to hell... We just think like that... It was the characters chance to redeem himself... To confess his sins... But because of his uncle’s experience it blurred the lines for him... He chose to kill the bird each time instead of confessing his since... He was given many chances to go through that door a changed man...

Grandma got the door to heaven, uncle got the door to hell, and narrator got the door to purgatory. Except that it was the same damn door. Probably it was Hades and not the Christian God/Devil that exists at the bottom of the stairs.
