Thats the problem, they dont ban on detect. They let these players ruin possibly hundreds of games, each with 9 other players, before they get the hammer. Ban waves is something that would be effective in open world games like gta, not games where the engagement time can be significantly shorter. The industry standard for fps style games should be banned as soon as possible. With multiple redundancy features so if one gets figured out then others are still in place working. No one is saying its easy because it isnt but banning in waves is a bandaid fix to a broken bone. With how long it takes to get to top 500 there should almost never be full blown cheaters there.

See, you're talking on idealistic bases. No world is ideal, if we're gonna critique something it's best for us to do it grounded in reality. And the reality is that banning on detection will only require cheaters to create a new account (if needed, they'll reset their modem for a new IP and re-id their HW) and avoid using whatever cheat that got them banned: they'll either buy another one that works or just downgrade to a previous version that wasn't detected. That's a down time of minutes and will still guarantee an uptime of days, weeks, maybe months until the anticheat gets an update to keep them away for some more minutes. If you ban in waves, cheat's developers will have to do some backflips to figure out where things soured for them. Instant bans will feel good for the match that got canceled where you were against a cheater, but that's all. What could be done to improve on that is that we should have different layers of reporting and reviewing both on the company and community side. Automatic suspending a suspicious player until manually reviewed through an optional community screening (something akin to CS:GO's Overwatch system) followed up with a support team on the company side review with all data collected from the match and previous matches from the suspicious player. But that has a cost (on dev time, support time and community time) and it's not cheap at all, specially considering that a F2P game is bound to have a lot more cheaters than a B2P. So many companies decide against it and keep it like it is. EDIT: for the automatic suspensions, there are ways of tuning it to in-game stats that would look suspicious, like constant turbo flicks that tracks directly to players (there are ways to programatically check for LOS, tracking through walls, etc), perfect relative accuracy (someone having 100% accuracy on team fights followed up by 0% accuracy off team fights constantly during a few games), etc. If we have the tools to craft an aimbot or a wallhack in the workshop, we also have the tools in game to check for aimbots and wallhacks. It's just not there yet.

@KlebinDaBoca I said it wasn't easy. But also the notion that ban waves keep hack software developers on their toes is ridiculous. They don't have to do backfljps. Many of them have multiple cheats they sit on and use depending on the scenario. You even said it yourself that they either downgrade or upgrade. Take the comparison to gta. When waves come to fix cheats, hours later new ones are out. You will not fix the problem by banning in waves. You never will. You fight these kinds of things by being as proactive as the cheaters are. The standard shouldn't *just* be banning on detection or solely banning in waves. But to say that it is acceptable to leave the cheaters be ruining games until we ban wave them is wierd. Also just because it's f2p shouldn't mean that the community should just blanket accept more cheaters. The f2p model, when done right, is one of the most profitable models in history. They should have the money, they should have the resources. Not to mention we are talking about a major developer. It is hard for developers, no one is saying it isn't but we shouldn't accept this from blizzard. It shouldn't be a meme that overwatch doesn't have good cheat detection. I know they have had horrible management from higher ups but it's getting annoying hearing that for everything. The devs are playing blame games with the management while nothing is still getting done and no transparency on these issues is taking place.
