I’m 60 years old and have been visiting Green Ridge since I was a kid with my dad. Been to the overlook on Carroll road over 50 times. I go now just to reminisce. Heading there in two weeks to catch full bloom fall colors. Lots of memories with family and friends, many of whom have passed on. Sometimes I just sit and remember. Love point lookout. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure! Glad it helped out! After I had already left I realized there was a whole section I did not explore. Next time through I am making a point to check that section out.
Great work! Loved watching! Green Ridge State Forest has been my home away from home, (I live near Annapolis) since the late 70's. I even owned a cabin on the WV side of Bond's Landing for 10 Yrs. Thank you for sharing!!
I haven’t camped there in a long time but they used to have a book in the office with photos of all the campsites you could look through if you went during office hours. My favorite sites were at the end Howard Rd, Out Door Club Rd (your right near the Potomac River), Carroll Rd (near the river but you don’t get the mosquitos like at Bonds Landing), and ones along Fifteen Mile Creek in spring only as it dries up. It’s never crowded at Green Ridge- you’d need 46,000 people there to have 1 person per acre, lol.
I have got to go by there when the visitor center is open one of these days. Both times I stopped in it was after hours. I am betting that the people working there are extremely helpful and know the sites well to help you get the best spot. I love how spaced out most of the sites are! Even if every site had people staying there you would not feel cramped for space.
Piclic Rd and Poly Neil Rd are the two hardest and legit trails there. I have videos of them on my channel. Purslane Rd was kinda fun too. Old Town Toll Bridge across the North Branch in Old Town MD is fun to check out while there too.
I don't know that I would call it Overlanding, but it is great for car camping. I haven't been recently, but I did spend about a 10 year period of regular camping trips there. Did you see the abandoned trestles and tunnels?
I agree on it not being what I usually think of for Overlanding. While I was out exploring the place it did seem like a good mix between a Hotel and Overlanding. I absolutely love how the spots are well spaced out to give you plenty of room. I didn’t make it to the trestles and tunnels. I missed out exploring part of the area due to time. The next time I make it to the area I am hitting the parts I missed for sure.
I've been camping at GRSF for going on 50 years. I've stayed at dozens of sites on the south and north sides of 68 and have never taken the time to hit the overlook in the beginning of the video. That WILL change on my next trip.
Almost all the roads are maintained gravel. No problem at all with an overland trailer. Most of the campsites are also large with plenty of room for the trailer.
If the office is open you need to go in and pay. That is probably the best way to do it if it is your first time there. That way they can help find you the ideal camp and make sure your vehicle will not have any problems getting there. When the office is closed, they take that list of people that have paid for campsites and hang it in the self check in area. That way you know what camp sites are still open. You put your name down, put your cash or check in the pay envelope and put your info down on it along with the camp site and number of days you are paying for.
That’s the JCR overhead Molle panel. I like having the extra space. I have a couple bags mounted. One huge benefit it has is that I can stuff a few hoodies up there to store and it also keeps my soft top from making loud flapping noises. kills 2 birds with one stone. You do need to drill 2 holes in front to mount be careful to not drill through wiring harness. Also it kept squeaking, so I added some plastic washers to stop that. Overall I have been happy with it.
Thank you for the tip! I am planning to make this a stop over on my next trip out West and will swing by to check out the spot. Fingers crossed it will be open.
