I was out sourcing yesterday with my local Facebook reseller group and on the way home I stopped off at my favorite antique mall to cast iron treasure hunt! Oh boy, did I ever find some. Not sure what they will look like after I strip them, but they sure are different and interesting!
On the video, one of them appeared to have a crack when I was showing off the piece, but upon closer examination after the video and an initial soak in a vinegar bath, the "crack" turned out to be a water streak that turned into rust! The tell tale sign that it doesn't appear to be a crack is that it is NOT on both sides, only on the outside. Truly cracked pieces will have the crack on both sides, no matter how small. I will know for sure once I have made substantial progress on stripping the piece in question. I will show my results on a future video so stay tuned! If you are not subscribed to my channel, hit the subscribe button and the little bell next to it to be notified of all my recent videos! Thank you as always for watching and for your support of my channel!

I have really been enjoying your excellent videos since finding your channel. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I do have a question for you tho. Is there any way to get the "wobble" or "spin" out of an old skillet?
@ladylibertystacker2014
@ladylibertystacker2014 4 года назад
Thank you Mark! As to wobble, there is no way that I know to remove it. I usually won’t buy them if I know before I buy. I bought the #4 simply because I hadn’t seen a skillet like it before.
@stagger204

@@ladylibertystacker2014 Wow! Quick response, lol. I've never bought any cast iron, but have several skillets, a chicken fryer, and a Dutch oven with lid and wire handle which belonged to my grandmother and my great grandmother. Btw, I am 58 years old. One of the skillets (unmarked Wagner) wobbles a bit, but it's still a good cooker. Thank you for replying to my question, and I hope you have a blessed day.
@ladylibertystacker2014
@ladylibertystacker2014 4 года назад
Oh, no, I didn't infer that you bought any! lol But if I hope to possess it, I must buy it! My grandparents and parents never cooked with it. How did I find it? Just doing my prepping so I bought a modern Lodge and then discovered the vintage stuff after finding that the Lodge was so darned heavy! I am your age (haha) so I fight arthritis in my right hand, so lighter stuff is better for me to handle!

The #4 looks to be a recast. Even so it is still well worth the $8 just for the fun of restoring it.
@ladylibertystacker2014
@ladylibertystacker2014 4 года назад
Thanks Larry! Yeah, I had no idea. It is sitting in vinegar and looks so messed up still! I don't know if there is any hope for it, but it was worth a shot! We shall see what happens. Maybe I will get my drill out when it comes out of the vinegar bath! lol I would NEVER do that to a truly collectible piece, but here I have NOTHING to lose! Haha!
@larrystephens7437
@larrystephens7437 4 года назад
@@ladylibertystacker2014 LOL... I don't think the drill will do any damage the value to that one and it might even help! It's collectable value is going to be to someone that collects recast. Griswold would have never let something with that many casting flaws out of the factory. Personally I love those old recast. Some small family foundry turned that skillet out and we can only imagine the struggle of the times in their life. My current project is restoring a #14 Lodge lid for my #14 no notch. I doubt the lid will ever be used because it will take three people to pick up the skillet with the lid. It's in the eTank spa soaking in the bubbles. I'm a new sub to your channel and looking forward to your new videos.
@ladylibertystacker2014
@ladylibertystacker2014 4 года назад
Thank you for subbing Larry! I am not as familiar with recast cast iron skillets. All I knew was that the skillet looked very funny, like something was a bit off! Since #4s are rare, I was going to take a chance on it. $8 wasn't too much to spend to learn something else about cast iron collecting. Your Lodge sounds monstrous! I know I could never lift it, especially with the lid! What are you planning on doing with it once you are done?
@larrystephens7437
@larrystephens7437 4 года назад
@@ladylibertystacker2014 My #14 Lodge gets used often mainly as a flat top grill. I purchased the lid that was with a #14 BSR RM. I just wanted to have the lid because the #14 no notch just needed it LOL. I don't run into #14's often and have never had a problem reselling them. The larger skillets #10 and up are getting a little harder to find at a reasonable price. As you well know it takes a lot of time and effort to restore cast iron correctly. It's just a hobby for me. I sell a few and give away a lot as well as keep a few that are collectable. At one time my wife collected #3's until we ran out of display room. I have way too many #5's can't seem to sell them. I can't pass up a good price even if I don't need the pan. It's fun to restore them and bring them back to life. Looking forward to seeing that #4 after you finish restoring it.!

Yes I finally figured that out! lol. I’ve been collecting vintage cast iron now for about 3 years or so and Ive never run into one in the wild! The price of $8 was well worth learning that fact! It really does look messed up. I will strip it to the best of my ability then I will take a sander to the bottom to smooth it out so I can actually cook with it!

Oh this video was a great show first thing this Sunday morning...a cup of coffee and I feel Blessed to be alive. Cast Iron just sums up all about life. The history, their age, the scars of use, some neglect, resistance, strong, and too far gone for rescue...lol.

Good morning and thank you Manland! I am drinking my coffee glad to be alive and enjoying your nice comment. lol I was just thinking how blessed I am to run into this old stuff that I can restore. There is hardly a better feeling in the world when I can bring an old piece back to its former glory. I occasionally run into rejects (that #4 for instance) where I just don't think there is anything that can be done shy of removing most of the excess bottom metal!

@ladylibertystacker2014

@Mark Duster Yes, you can stack skillets on top of one another in a lye bath, but they should NOT touch each other in a vinegar bath if you use one. Please email me at ladylibertystacker@gmail.com for info on my online listings. Once you have one, you can see my store on that particular site.

Thank you Lloyd! As for me, I am in a large metro area which encompasses several smaller cities but I am not far from the boonies either. I am not sure where you are, but if you venture out about an hour or so, are you still in a large city or are you in the sticks? I would see what kind of antique malls or shops are in a circular area about an hour from where you live. You might surprise yourself! I sell on Bonanza, eBay, and branching out to Etsy. I get those down, I will continue to seek other platforms in which vintage sells well. As for my finds, the last several times I was in that antique shop, I have found zilch, nada, nothing! I was actually surprised I found what I did! :-) You just never know...

@@ladylibertystacker2014 Any meat at all. Steak or stew, chicken deer or even bear makes no difference. In the oven fry about a lb or so of the meat of your choice with lots of salt and pepper. Remove the meat. Simple veggies, Potatoes(I like white or Yukon gold as they stay better) carrots, celery, onion. A head of garlic smashed with a knife to peel. I like sliced whole mushrooms as well. There is no set recipe as such. Once the mushrooms have cooked down a bit add the fried meat and onions/veggies and add enough water to just cover everything. Once the spuds and carrots have cooked through thicken with flour and water. A basic dumpling recipe added to the top of the stew so they sit on top to cook. 10 min uncovered and 10 min covered at a slow boil. While cooking add whatever other spices that please the nose and taste buds aws well. There ya go, a simple stove top Irish stew ready in just over an hour. Add any other veggies as well. Like I said it is a simple put stuff in a dutch oven and cook it eh. I have done it on a wood fire as well. Enjoy my friend.
