If you have a spare week, it's well worth going to Taumaranui and doing the five day Whanganui river crossing. I've been around the world, but the river crossing takes the cake!
hey bro, how you commentate is what goes on in my head when im walking around anywhere. it feels like im listening to my inner monologue😂🤙love your content! as a māori stuck in aus im definitely missing home, so its nice to see home through a similar viewpoint as my own :))
I'm from Hastings, but sometimes go to Masterton for work. Absolutely love it there. Sushi planet is one of my favourite sushi places. Its quite buzzy watching and being like "I've been there!" Haha enjoy bro!
8:52 Ever since The Simpsons episode where the name of the Springfield firearms retailer was revealed to be; Bloodbath and Beyond , I have always referred to Bed Bath and Beyond as such.
Love you videos but you need to change your camera settings to stop the fluorescent lights flickering. It's to do with the power in NZ being 50hz and the camera expect US or Japan 60hz. Change the frame rate and it shouldn't flicker any more.
There's another hidden NZ town that you need to check out (accessible by a winding road over a hill): Takaka, on the northwest corner of the South Island.
Whakaoriori Masterton is my hometown and I'm pissed off you were here and I didn't see you uptown 😢 Yep that is the cricket oval and u can walk on it 😂 Masterfry Chicken is the place to go yummy 10 cc has been around forever and started as a milkbar my Aunty was the 1st owner of that place
Different than Ballentynes a budget fashion store in small towns. Ballantynes Christchurch is as you say a family owned department store with history and quality goods which indeed had a disastrous fire in 1948. The Ballantyne family held the Christchurch inner city together after the big recent quakes for which I will always admire them and shop at their wonderful store.
curls the real hidden town is the republic of Whangamomonga on the Forgotten Highway, they are a self-declared republic that tried to succeed from nz in 1989 due to not liking being put under the jurisdiction of the new local council when they redrew the lines. in the past, they have had a sheep and a dog as their president but currently, the position is held by a man, a wacky place with the pub as their government house (very very small 5 building type town)
Hi Curls , the Remutaks are not what they used to be . I'm now 80 and when I was 15 years old learnt to drive on the hill driving from Upper Hutt to Featherston several times and got my license before I was 16 .
Bruh, what are you talking about? Masterton ain't the hidden town. Sure, you drive over the Rimutaka's to get there from Wellington, but if you're driving through Wairarapa to get to Wellington or go up to Hawke's Bay or Gisborne, Masterton is on the main highway along with other Wairarapa towns such as Carterton and Greytown. The true hidden towns are Marton in Manawatu, and Wairarapa's Martinborough.
talking of artwork on walls ... i followed your trademe link the other day and was quite surprised with your art work that you put up for charity and I think it would be pretty cool to make a video of you creating your artwork .. art was my worst subject at school but I do like watching people sketch, paint and draw. I was quite impressed with your work you auctioned so would be a cool idea for an extra channel video ...
I raised my 6 children in the Wairarapa and it seriously is the best place to raise a family. Thanks for the walk around the place I will always call home.
Man oh man curls finds some really obscure places in NZ. I'd reckon he just about knows it like the back of hand. he leaves no stone unturned in the land of the big white cloud and if there is an ice cream or potato scallop or pie to be consumed Curls will do it even if you gotta do a round trip over a bridge to get there lol
Masterton isn't obscure or "hidden", it's on a main highway. Marton or Martinborough are the true hidden towns in the southern portion of Te Ika a Maui.
@@nintendonut100 Well maybe to people in Manawatu.. My grandparents lived mostly in Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Horowhenua, my parents were born in Wairarapa, then I was born in Hawke's Bay and lived most of my life in Gisborne while occasionally visiting my grandparents in Wairarapa and Horowhenua, and I'd never heard of Marton until I went there at 36 years old because I was visiting a friend in Bulls and was told Marton had the nearest supermarket. So it can't really be that well known if I went 36 years not ever hearing of it while sometimes even being nearby. LOL There's also the fact that it, like Martinborough, isn't exactly on a main highway. You really have to be going there to come across it. Or somewhere nearby that doesn't have a supermarket. LOL
Hey bro your videos are awesome makes me miss home alot been in Aussie for 12 years but if you get a chance can you visit my hometown of wanganui be good to see what it looks like over the years and I’ll think you would enjoy it alot highly recommend
Hi Curls. If you travel up to the Far North of NZ to a very small village called "HOREKE",you will see such povety, broken down homes with people still living in some. This small village, buit mostly on the Hokianga harbour,is where Im originaly from,we had a Camp Site,Post office,Petrol station,4 Square store, pub, and speed boat regators every Easter up and down the harbour and wood chopping events. Now nothing for many years mainly because the old folk died off and the young generation simply dont care how they all live up there. Its a real shame how a once busy and bright village has become.Only one or two people up there are trying to bring some flavour back, with craft shops etc. But worth a visit if you are ventureing up that way sometime.Would make an excellent Doco. James.
This is what a lot of biggish towns in NZ were like 50 years ago. Either not quite big enough or a City Council with the balls to keep the malls and big box stores out. Decent sized population but more importantly a large rural population surrounding them, pumping in the $$. Farmers generally dont do malls or big box stores, they call up the same business their granddad used, knowing they will have what they want and will send it right out.
There,s a car yard in Masterton ,you have missed ,that would blow your mind , it,s full of American Muscle cars ,Mustangs ,Camero, s etc. We'll over twenty V8s I think it,s just as you head out ,across the Road is a park of some sort.
You can also approach from the north or west. Black Swans are native to Australia, and are very much a nuisance here. That is not the town centre. Masterton is very boring mate. You are one of the most positive people I have ever come across. BTW liquor and liqueur are not the same word.
You're allowed on the grass in NZ. when I was a child we often went to masterton park (70yrs ago) and I loved the swans. In those days ALL the swans were white. Since then black Australian swans arrived and now white swans are rare. Pity.
I really want you to make a video about Waiouru and its Army museum there. They have tanks there and I want to compare your height with the tanks height.
Oh lordy, I was bought up in Carterton, now a place under demand for country living. Masterton, good lord!! Its certainly has improved although I wouldnt return.
Hello Curls from the UK. I love your videos on all the different towns in NZ....BUT please could you tell us if the town you are visiting is in the North Island or the South Island and where about it is on the island....a bit like giving us a geography lesson. I have to refer to an Atlas to find out where you are. Really enjoy your videos.
@@GypsyGirl317 Thank you so much. ❤ Indeed, she was family to me. Everywhere I go in my house, it still brings back memories of her, and it can be quite emotional at times. 😢💔 I also lost one of my cats to old age earlier this year. Both of these losses have had a significant impact on my mental well-being. But It's comforting to know others who can relate to what I'm going through. So, thank you once for your support. Really means a lot. 🙏
Our small towns still close on Sundays apart from convenience stores. Families still have a life. 😊 Saturday morning or during the week it would be humming. We like being a tiny island nation in the south Pacific Ocean 🌏
