Anyone who owns/knows about the Pearl Jupiter know that it is *IMPOSSIBLE* to find replacement snare wires for it. After searching under every rock for replacements I finally figured out a hack! Hopefully this helps someone! Everything you need for this project: Snare wires: amzn.to/31BRSuL Countersink: amzn.to/2MPlLnM Bits: amzn.to/2IiqQ3W Driver: amzn.to/31CLy5U Drill: amzn.to/2MQwiiP

I'm not a drummer, so forgive me if this is stupid question, but why are these drum so notorious? and aren't some snares tensioned by a strap? Like couldn't a simple adaptor plate been fabricated?

Technically no, (he had/has the Gladstone throw off; not the Jupiter)... but people seem to interchange the "Jupiter" name when referencing either model. The Jupiter is technically the one Dave has in this video. There is a video online of Stewart using his "snare of mysterious provenance". It's a "Gladstone" throw off and NOT a Jupiter.

Thank you, this was soooo helpful. I just fixed up a snare for a relative of a friend. I ordered the snare wires and followed the instructions. I drilled out the holes to 7/32 and had to turn both tensioners in to make it fit. It was a pain in the a@@ to set the shoulder screws but once I did, everything went into place. The snare functions and sounds great!

i got one 2 years ago for 400 australian dollars and a smart friend got it going with a snare strand .He had to do all sorts of enginering tasks to make it work and could get just enough tension with the snares .Also he explained with the snare action there are all of these different screws to play with to adjust the action[too confusing for me] but i will show him this great video and he can do it this way =his way worked but cant make the snare strand go really tight.

Great David! Have you tried to use the Gibraltar SC363e snare wires and drill out the rivet and use that hole for mounting? Great if that would work, since those wires are cheaper than Puresound and also have the linkage 2x10 as the originals.

How do you like the sound of a snare with extended wires compared to a snare with regular shorter wires?
@Xtremecarfan10188
@Xtremecarfan10188 3 года назад
So I just had an idea too. I looked up these old Puresound Wires that matched the Jupiter. Apparently total length is 16 1/2 inches. I found a Gibraltar 20 stand that is 16 in length even. I wonder if I can get away with the extra 1/2 inch missing. Because it seems the metal edge part of the snare wires are a bit longer on Puresound. If I can re-drill the new snare wires even if it barely fits. Curious now.

"Fat Cat"'s 14x16 Strand Vintage "Radio King" is easier and cheaper! It's 311SKR (36.67$) cheaper than the Puresound and you don't need to drill anything. The only thing you need to do is flip the mechanics, add 2 small washers and screw the snares into place. You're welcome!

I do have a question about the replacing of snare wires. I put my Tama Starclassic snares on my Mapex snare drum and the tama snares came with this silk like ribbon. I had a heck of a time getting them to tighten up right and now with the snare fully tightened and tuned it still sounds as if the snares are too loose. Should I use something else other than this silky ribbon for the snare attatchment? It's what came with the hi-carbon super sensitive snares so I figured Tama knew what they were doing... But then again my throw off and butt plate are from Mapex. Not Tama... Any advice?
@jasonschooler4450
@jasonschooler4450 4 года назад
Replacing snares and tensioning them is a bit of a balancing act. The end goal being high tension snare wires when strainer is cranked and no snare at all with the strainer lever disengaged. The good thing is you can experiment for very little money and time. Companies such as Gibraltar make aftermarket parts such as white nylon string and clear mylar strips designed specifically for snare and strainer mechanisms. These two products are the most common methods used over the past 70 years. Tried and true, give it a shot. Good luck my friend!

this is a "marching" type of throw off. which gives more articulation to the ghost notes and thin play. this is something regarded as high-end product. so yeah, if you can keep it, it's better. no matter what age this thing has.

This snare is from the 70s FFS so parts availability can be difficult. It's actually a great design better than most other supersensitive thowoffs. it's compact and never fails just an issue with snare wire replcements since puresound stopped making them a few years ago.

@@alfaholic3 I have a buddy who owns 2 different ludwig super sensitive snares. I hate the design because they are a headache to service. And finding replacement wires can be a nightmare.
