I found a bigger Lake Superior agate than I ever thought was possible in the area I hunt. It tipped the scales at a whopping four pounds.

- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

Absolutely amazing finds. I love your channel & havent missed one yet! My ultimate wish is that when you scout the shorelines & find those weird, odd & just downright rocks that stump our imagination & so spectacular we have no words.... please give us an educated guess of what you think and show it a tad longer because i know many of us rockhounders out there have rocks like those & we wanna know what they could be because we love them too. Those are the rocks we wanna know more about...the ones we know nothing or very little about. Thanks for sharing all your rock adventures. I appreciate you.
@wyomingadventures

You would have to be a geologist to know what every rock is imo. Rob knows a lot about rocks through. I appreciate when he says I don't know what this rock is. I'm sure most of us rockhounds don't know what every rock is.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 2 года назад
Unfortunately, I’m not a geologist and don’t even know that much about geology. I’m much more into the lapidary part of this hobby. I know a few rocks and mention what they are when I do. I could probably do a better job of showing the rocks for a bit longer. It’s really difficult to keep everyone happy though. On one hand, I want to show the rocks long enough that you get a good look at it, but on the other hand, if I don’t go fast enough, the video will be too slow moving for some people. Keep the advice coming, I listen to all of it.

It was nice that you finally got a break from the flies. I wonder where they all went. I liked the black and white color changing rock. Did you take that one home? The agate was a good find. It would look good slabbed, so you could see the inside. Poor Sam must have been freezing is shorts and flip flops. I don’t think that he was expecting 51 degree weather.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 2 года назад
Neither of us were expecting it to be quite that cold I was in shorts and wading in the water too. As long as you're dressed warm on the tip, it's not that bad. The flies are worst in hot weather. They don't seem to be out nearly as much in the cold or wind. I'm not sure where they hunker down on those days. We made two videos on this day and the two flies videos were made the day before.

That IS an agate, I don’t doubt it. Wow, what a monster! I’ve seen agatized petrified wood before so I know agate replacements can occur. That process reminds me of coldwater agate that you can find in limestone over here in Wisconsin. I’ve never seen what you’ve got there but I’ve never hunted Lake Michigan. The pattern is unmistakable though and congratulations!

Thank you! I had never seen one like this, but had lots of people tell me what it was on a LSA Facebook group.

Hi Rob! My fiancé and I watch all of your videos, you’re our favorite rock guy! We live in Utah but he is from Michigan and we try to visit at least once a year to look for rocks! We were just there a couple of weeks ago and we found our first LSAs! We also came home with a bunch of “magates” as you call them. I’m just wondering what do you do with yours? Most of ours are quite small but have a lot of the outer rock before you’d get to the inside part that might be agate. Will that outer layer come off in the tumbler? I’m not sure if you’ll see this but thanks in advance for your time and for your videos that help tide us over until the next time we can get back there ourselves!

I don't do anything with my agates. They're so hard to find and usually so small, that I don't want to tumble them. I have all my agates and magates mixed together right now, but I want to separate them and tumble the magates. Since I haven't done that yet, I can't tell you what will happen. I hope that some reveal some hidden bands, but I suspect most will not.

I am on the Oregon coast and our agates are far different. maybe I have passed up some that I didn't recognize as agate. Your four pounder is quite different, but then after you explained I could sort of understand.

As you saw, I wasn't at all sure this was an agate when I was on the beach. I wonder if I've passed some up in the past too.

I love your videos, they have become a weekly staple in our house! It has inspired me to go rock hunting with my fiancé. I am in Pittsburgh, where would you suggest a good spot near us to go hunt?

I have never been to Pittsburg and have done almost all of my rock hunting in Michigan, so I can’t help you with rock hunting locations near you.
