I discuss why I decided on the chicken Run floor material for our homestead that works best for us and why the other types don't. Then we put it in and let the chickens judge.
If you enjoyed this video at all please give it a like and if you want to see more homesteading and outdoor adventure hit subscribe. They are both free and it helps us out a lot.
Thanks and happy Homesteading

Once a year, you clean out the run completely and make a compost pile. Make an area that is the compost area and fence it in if you want to, but let your chickens have access to it. Throw all the chicken poo from when you clean out the coop in that pile, all the food scraps, all the yard waste. Your chickens will make you a very nice compost. You don’t have to do anything but add to it now and then they do all the work.

Here's an idea for the floor in your chicken coop. Make a square wooden frame out of 2"x4", or even 2"x6", that measure maybe 2'x2', and nail or screw slats of 2"x4" with spaces in between of 1", to create an elevated grate floor of sorts, and put seeds under that grate floor, so that when they germinate, the roots will get fertilized by the chicken manure, the grass will grow throw and in between the wooden slats, and the chicken will have access to fresh green grass, but will not be able to scratch and destroy the root system. The manure will fall through the gaps in the wooden slats, and will decompose as they feed the grass. Eventually (maybe a year or two) the volume of matter (composted manure and grass vegetation) will build and you might have to raise those wooden frames to clean beneath by scrapping it, taking it out somewhere, and replanting new seeds under the wooden frames, and again, you might not have to do it at all, if the frames are built out of 2"x6", which will give you about 5.5" of height for manure and plant matter to accumulate beneath before it starts to reach the bottom of the floor slats. Let me know what you think about that idea.

Add some raw biochar (char) to reduce odors. The resulting combination of inoculated biochar, chicken poop (nitrogen), and woodchips (carbon) makes top-shelf compost.

This is what I've been doing since the start. Woodchips break down with the chicken poop and make an excellent medium to your compost pile to further break down. I planned on doing it once a year, but the chips last longer than a year.

I live in a residential Area I can only have 5 to 6 chicken no rooster I'll probably just do sand cause it seems easy to take care of.

6:22 Depending on who you talk to, you'll get different definitions for what means for chickens to be "free range". From what I have found on the internet, there is no true definition of what a free range means, and it seems that as long as a chicken has access to outside of the coop for at least 1 hour per day and are not kept in cages, then they could be considered "free range". So technically, just allowing them to be in the chicken run for most of the day, they could be considered "free range", which is what I do with my chickens.

Just a suggestion if you get alot of rain you can buy rolls of window screen mesh. If you tack it up with the welding wire it prevents alot of water coming into the run.

I got over 40 birds, but some are jungle fowl that sleep in the trees, they hate the coop 😂. I totally agree about having to go and scoop up poop 💩, it's a waste of time, I'm building a pergola style run with no roof, the goal is have grass grow in there, this is easier than wood chips, I'm in the tropics, grass grows super fast here, I'm also trying new stuff to automate as much as possible to have extra time to do things.

Yes definitely have to do what works for you. Our grass doesn't stand a chance in the run. Very interesting, the different ways of doing things based on climate. Good luck to you. Would love to see your finished pergola!

Are you saying poop sticks to the hay?
@oftin_wong
@oftin_wong Месяц назад
@@Mypplz yes you can just take up the top layer that's lying around exposing the relatively clean hay underneath ..then compost the hay and poop in you compost maker so it kinda bulks out your compost with the hay right from the get go and the hay rots quick etc you can add leaves to it as well etc, in the compost maker ...I add coarse sand as well because I'm amending my clay soil slowly

@@Donathfamilyhomestead the chickens also get to search through it all for the oat seeds ..very good for them and high in calcium $8 a bale or so hi from Australia 🦘

I want to use wood chips myself, but everybody keeps saying that your chickens can get bumble foot from splinters
@Donathfamilyhomestead
@Donathfamilyhomestead 3 месяца назад
I have not personally had any instances of bumblefoot since I've been using wood mulch. My chickens are let out daily, and it's possible for them to get it from nearly anything. If it's a concern, I know lots of people who use sand with much success.

There are definitely other more absorbent materials. Fine or extra fine bedding, some people like straw that hasn’t been sprayed.

Your hen is only doing what comes naturally to her by looking for out of the way places to lay her eggs. I removed my nesting boxes that were on the upper part of their coop (that someone else had built) and I replaced them with kitty litter boxes on the ground, which they really liked. I used chopped straw on the ground, which was really good at soaking up wetness and breaking down as well. I also put a small kiddy pool in there full of fine, white sand in the run so that a handful of them could be in there are the same time. : )
