Welcome to a thrilling deep-dive into the heart of BMW engines! In this video, we uncover the best-kept secret of BMW engines, challenging conventional wisdom and redefining car performance. Join me as we journey from the naturally aspirated N52, through the turbocharged N20 and B48, right up to the exceptional B58.
If you're interested in the turbo and downpipe that I mention in this video you can find it here (affiliate):
The turbo is from IPOS and it's called the IM450, link here bit.ly/43Gn6jV and the downpipe is here bit.ly/3JgU3va
We unravel the transformation BMW underwent in engine development, and how they learned from past failures to produce engines that are not only powerful but also efficient and surprisingly tunable. We'll answer intriguing questions - what if BMW knew from the beginning that the engine architecture was going to be turbocharged? How did this foresight transform the design of the B58 and B48 engines?
Watch me as I upgrade the turbo on my B48, aiming for a whopping 360 wheel horsepower with just 91octane, and making this G20 330i nearly as fast as a G80 M3, all while keeping the engine untouched. This engine has more to offer, and I’ll push the limits, even reaching over 400 wheel horsepower with E50. Could it get any better? Well, stay tuned for a potential run at 450 wheel horsepower with port injection in the future.
Who knew you could own a B48 powered BMW that's lighter, faster, and more fuel-efficient than its expensive counterparts? It's about time we let this well-kept secret out!
If you enjoy getting up to speed with the ins and outs of engine performance, don't forget to like this video, share it with your fellow car enthusiasts, and subscribe to my channel for more exciting content. Enjoy the ride!
Thanks for watching, if this is the first video you're seeing of mine consider subscribing. I upload regularly. When you see the word "affiliate" listed beside any link in my description please know that this is a custom link and I will earn a small commission if you opt to purchase using said link. Just want to say that I just recently bought my first bmw , a 335i e92, and I found it has a ton of issues (after buying, of course) and the dealership quoted me $14k+ to get it running well again. I’ve been binging your videos to help educate myself to do the work at home and they have been super helpful. Thanks for putting so much effort into them 🙏

A LOT of routine maintenance, I'm gearing up to do a valve cleaning here when I find the time, oil blow by gets into the intake tract and creates carbon build up inside the intake valves choking off air flow to the engine. I took the manifold off and LOTS of carbon crud on the walls and valves themselves, an upgraded PCV valve and oil catch can should alleviate the build up but it still needs to be cleaned.
@teekay_1
@teekay_1 Год назад
I thought the secret was that they all end up leaking oil.
@BozoBlaster12
@BozoBlaster12 Год назад
They do, the oil filter housing gasket will eventually fail, leaking oil down the front and drivers side of the engine, oil will get on the serpentine belt and over time saturating the oil and stretching the belt which can then result in it slipping making awful belt squeaking and then it can slip out and get wedged in between your harmonic balancer and push its way back the front main seal I to the oil pan, and if your lucky the power steering pulley might hit the subframe from hitting a pothole and breaking the guides for the pulley and can shred the softened belt up like it did to me! Which can also push pieces instead of the whole belt into the front main seal. It's a plastic pulley like everything else so I replaced with an aluminum pulley. If you don't replace the gasket this can all happen and lead to catastrophic engine failure.

The only failure I’ve seen to the balance shaft was from a customer over revving to 9k. The idler sprocket wobbled off the bearing and broke through the side of the block. The rod bearings were in good shape.

How is it possible to rev to 9000rpm??? The rev limiter should prevent that. Only way to do that would be downshifting a manual in the extreme, but there are not many manuals left, if any with the later engines.

From a review point of view...these type of video are really super knowledge based and are gaining confidance instant, compare to other types. Generate on some way nostalgic feelings, from the time Porsche brochures were discovered, as they were embedded with technical details. Of course, the present video beeing at another higher level, the model presented is still percepted as new in the market (and it is, despite being facelift today). Again a big thank you to Musa! I can’t thank you enough for such an informative video. I wouldn’t be modifying this, just curious about the reliability as a daily driver for years to come. I’m concerned about the timing components being at the rear, but I do feel better now knowing that the balance shaft is gear-driven. I believe these have 3 water pumps, which also seems a little concerning for long-term reliability, but on the other hand, it’s good to see cooling is a priority.

My favorite BMW engines overall were the N52, N55 and B58. N55 was very reliable, especially in the EWG and M2 variants while being tunable as you mentioned, and the B58 just improved on every aspect into one package. Just my opinion and experience from owning all three. B48 is also giving me a good feeling as a quality engine.

It's sensibly tuned to 455bhp/634nm as it's a daily driver, but I have a lot of confidence in it's reliability at that state of tune. I have always had 6 cylinder petrol engines, a particular favourite was the M52 in my E36 328i, as BMW have always made great straight sizes. I did have one 4 cylinder diesel but the reliable M47 engine.

Thanks for subbing! There are two places where even stock it impresses me, sometimes if you hit the torque just right at around 20 mph it'll put you back and from 80 to 100 mph it really moves. Might be going into an over boost. The lighter front end really sets it apart, the G80 M3 had an amazing front end but you could still feel the weight. The M340i felt clumsy at times, if you get it wrong that back end would want to swing around quick.

Nice key point to mention the N55’s potential if it had forged internals. The M235i and OG M2 have forged connecting rods and forged crank so power potential is substantially higher than with a 335i N55. But because of the N55 being sandwiched between the N54 and B58 the N55 ends up being underrated and overlooked.

Especially when I was doing the ZF transmission filter and mechatronics sleeve replacement. Getting that sleeve back in was ridiculous. Its awesome to come across some of your videos now when looking into BMW's 4 cylinders. I'm kicking myself for giving up on finding an x3 m40i (b58 suv) and going with a b9 Audi S4 (sedan lol). BMW dealerships were all asking on the high end/over KBB value on the X3's. The Audi was cheaper but the v6 "hot turbo v" 3.0 engine in the Audi is making me nervous. I'm looking to get back into a BMW soon because the insurance cost for the S4 is ridiculous. I've been looking at the 4 cylinder wagons, and hope insurance is cheaper for them. Thank you for this video. It affirms that Bmw hasn't made a good reliable 4 cylinder engine in a long time. The main failures of most 4 cylinders from most manufacturers now are balance shaft and chain failures. Vehicle manufacturers are going down the Colin Chapman route. But instead of making them last till the end of a race, it's now keeping them running until the warranty period is complete.

Other than those early N20s having that timing chain failure looming overhead the final year of the 328i was the N26, still open deck etc but no timing chain issues, and some other throw ins for reliability/efficiency. For the 4 cylinder community this is one of the few vehicles that has a longitudinally mounted engine that sits behind the front axle. It’s such a fun car to drive and handles great. Compared to some of the understeery fwd “fun” vehicles. Plus I agree with your take on the pricing of the 330i and M340i. It’s tough to find a low mileage example of the M340 for under 45k. Meanwhile I bought my 2016 in 2019 with 16k miles (spotless carfax) for 25k. BMWs are BMWs and they’ll still do BMW shit but my car has been reliable since I’ve owned it. Tires, oil change, and brake fluid change and bleed is the only maintenance I’ve had done but I am just hitting 56k miles.

Musa, great content. Youre extremelemy absorbed and knowledgeable about these engines as im in awe. My only question though is why spend $5k on an engine only to go 1 to 2 seconds faster? Is it worth the risk of the longevity of the motor just to get off the line or cruise faster than the car already is?

Thanks for the kind words. From my side a 14 second car really does feel just a bit slow, the E90 at 550 WHP was just too much to be honest, it was getting to the point where the speed was just for bragging rights but that car at 400 whp was so fun and speed wise more than enough. So I guess I'm chasing how fun the E90 was at stage 2+ with ethanol. The cars weigh a similar amount. Also when I got the 440i with a downpipe and a 93 tune it was nearly at that level and going any further was going to make it too fast for the chassis again, so I just left it there and waited for things to break to make videos and nothing broke even at 140K so I got this 330i instead. So it's fun building a car and earning the performance so to speak, on the M340I I had I didn't even want to touch it stock as it had more than enough performance. For perspective the G80 M3 was a monster but didn't wow me in terms of speed as it felt slower than the e90 with upgraded turbos. The difference with the G80 was it felt like it needed more power as the chassis was so good, 700 whp would be fine as the car could handle it. So it's more about not overwhelming the chassis with power if didn't come from the factory with the right underpinnings. The M sport 330i has the exact underpinnings as the M340i so I know it will be great at around 400 WHP and as it stands the chassis is too much for the engine to the point where it gets frustrating to drive unless you enter a corner with super high speed and hold it which is fun if you can maintain it but not good for the street lol.

I test drove a M240 and 230 Msport back to back and opted for the 230, mainly because of what you mentioned here. The 230 is more fun to drive as it is 200lbs lighter and the steering is leagues better. Also, for a daily driver the 230 has more than enough power for commutes and also have quite a bit of fun in the canyons without flying off a cliff lol.

f30 LCI has been on my radar with either the 8 speed or manual. 330i seems like a fun platform.

Sorry I posted this under the wrong video: Great video and a new subscriber here. Question: I have a 2022 Supra 2.0 with the B46/48. Would adding the JB+ ( not JB4) require that I upgrade any part of the engine as it adds 20-30hp and torque? Thank you!

Yeah the 20i models have the most potential to unlock as they can be tuned to be like a 330i with a stage 2 tune. If you want big power and would like to take it as far as I will on this car you'd need to install upgraded pistons.

The VAG engines just seems much easier to get good reliable power. BMW 4 cylinders seems to be very sensitive. So people don’t really touch them. You can see it from the tuning world too. They all focused on the B58. My B48 has a new turbo replaced at 20 000 miles, leaking oil..others running MHD or Bootmod have over fuelling issues on piston 4 which blows engine. Good Luck, I am subscribed . to see more!

Main caps are the main weakness in the B46/48. They should be 4 bolt per cap and extend the width of the block to aid in crankcase rigidity.
@VehicularDIY
@VehicularDIY Год назад
I'm wondering if they count on the rigidity coming from the fact that the bottom of the block in externally thick due to needing to house the balance shafts. Also the main cap design looks the same on the B58, correct me if I'm wrong.
