P bass pickups in a Mustang is for the exact reason you mentioned at the start of the video - you want the P bass sound, but injuries prevent you from playing a full scale bass.

I was a P guy for years. I love my Precision bass. It always has a place. It's THAT sound, and it's unmistakable, versatile, and there. However.... I always loved the look of mustangs, and I tried a couple, both guitars and basses, both Fender and Squier, but I never found one I loved. But the JMJ is it. It's the epitome of what I was hoping for out of the Mustang. The sound, the look, the feel--it's all there. The sound holds up against something like the P. Fender nailed the neck...it's absurdly playable. Now that I've had something with a nitro finish, it might be difficult to go back.

I own that Squier classic vibe, but in the same Capri orange colour with the red stripes as the Vintera II in your comparison. This was actually my first bass, coming from guitar. Great instrument. Put flats on it a few months ago and it sounds absolutely amazing.

I bought the PJ here in Nashville a few years ago, and I’ve used it in the studio, and live situations. One of my favorite things about it is thanks to certain laws of physics, as a short scale bass, it doesn’t have the dead notes that exist on the g string, as are inherent on my long scale vintage basses.

Ref.the switch on the PJ Mustang, a couple of small drops of a certain spray lubricant, (supplied in a yellow and blue can), can help the switch to fully throw its the contacts. Use with the supplied fine red tube attached, to enable one small drop in from each side of the switch “handle”. Other spray lubricans are available, but this one works for me. Used it about 3 times over the last couple of years to good effect.

I own the JMJ, and didn’t care for the factory flats fender shipped it with, so I changed them out to La Bella Mustang flats which made a major difference. I’ve played those flats for about 6 months and was ready for a change. I just restrung it with DR Sunbeams, and WOW, just WOW! You gotta give these a try! I’ve fallen in love with this bass all over again! It’s never sounded so good, and the strings feel great!

@@philipconradmusic your welcome. I also have a 1972 Tele Bass. They reissued the original P Bass shape as the Telecaster Bass from 70-73 I think. I got that for $200 in 1989 from a friend of mine. I was in a Ska band in the late 80's early 90's. We went coast to coast. I hope I filled out that Bass raffle form correctly. THANKZ ! 🤙🏾

i bought the bronco a while back with plans on eventually upgrading components but honestly i fell in love with it right out of the box. i've never owned a short scale bass before this but because i have small hands i feel like it was instantly easier than the p's and j's i've owned before. it's pretty great that these days one can spend a relatively small amount on a squier and have a super solid instrument :)

My favorites were the Classic Vibe and the PJ. If I were going for a traditional Mustang sound, I would pick the Classic Vibe. If I were just picking based on my own sonic preferences, it would be the PJ. I agree with you that the American Performer sounded the worst. I wasn't as fond of the JMJ as you were. The pickups almost sounded "overdriven" to me. That's a cool sound. But I'd rather start with a clean sound and be able to add the grit later. The Vintera looked the coolest. But I thought the pickups didn't have enough top end. It almost sounded like you had the tone knob rolled back.

I love that the Vintera has the contoured back, I’ve never understood why the Mustangs in general all have a flat back, the flat back is not comfortable. Great video, I’m a pro player and use mostly the Sterling Stingray short scale bass’s these days, all set-up as BEAD with stainless steel bright round wounds.

Before the reveal, 1, followed closely by 4, though not listening with headphones. I have an incredible CV Squier Mustang that I picked up a number of years ago, the neck is just incredible. I put $400 of upgrades into the $200 bass, and every time I compare it against one of the US models, I like mine more. If you like the feel, you can always change the electronics. I have Labellas on it currently, but have had half rounds on it in the past. I have played a couple JMJ's and completely loved them.

In the blind test, I preferred the Squier Classic Vibe and the JMJ as shared winner, followed by the Fender Player, then the Bronco, then the Vintera II, and the Am. Performer last. Looking at price/performance, the Squier Classic Vibe is really a no-brainer! I also like its looks with the tinted neck being close to the original. The JMJ has the most Mojo for sure with its nice ageing. The Vintera II also looks sick. And the Bronco is pure Punk, especially in that color, really a fun bass! And I agree with you that adding stuff to get more can easily make you lose the essence. I don't want a P and/or a J pickup in a Mustang. Same with PJ basses that for me often are the worst of both worlds.

Squier Mustang Bass with a set of La Bella flats... Superb.... Best bass I ever owned. Love the JMJ a lot...but about 3 to 4 times as expensive as the Squier... In a band setting, it's hardly noticeable. The Squier's higher output pu kind of growls when played on a tube amp with a 15" cab... Next I hope to grab a Squier Bronco as these are such great value for the money....

I really appreciate your short scale Mustang comparison video. Thanks. Here's my take. It sounds to me like your not playing them all equally on your sound test. You're playing them pretty smooth except for the 2 basses you don't like, the PJ and American Performer. You're getting a smacking buzz sound on those two. Sounds like your noting them much harder than the others. Also, you're telling folks not to get the Mustang PJ, but to get a regular PJ if that's the sound they're looking for. However, lots of folks looking for a short scale because they're not comfortable on a full scale bass. Why shouldn't they get a PJ if that's the sound they're looking for? I like P & J basses, but being a fiddle player, they're just too big and heavy. I do wish they would have put two volume knobs on the Mustang PJ and not that dumb toggle switch. Be nice if they strung up the strings through the back too. Thanks again. Rock 'n' Roll!

A great shoot-out which validates my life choices. Earlier this year I got a slightly used blue JMJ and not only is it a blast to play, but it "sparks joy" every time I walk into my music room and see it. The Vintera II has the '70s Mustang cosmetics down and that ergonomic back carve-out -- but the JMJ's '66 body profile is just like a little surfboard, man! It has vibe for days and it delivers the sound. And yeah, the flats are a superpower on that bass.

The Classic Vibe and Paranormal Squier series punch WAY above their weight class, and I'm consistently impressed with how well they play and sound. Without setting them up the same and especially having the pickup heights to the strings be the same... the sound comparison is somewhat meaningless. Pickup height on a guitar or bass is really crucial to it's sound. Also mentioning the weights on these and how they hang when standing and wearing them on on a strap would have been useful information. I used to own a 77 Mustang bass and it was a real neck diver which I found to be an issue.

Squier, strange ... I'll explain: like a year ago, I did some shops to try all the Mustangs I could find. You could not find a JMJ, there was a long waiting list, so all I found where some Squier CV 's and some mex Players. The Squier has this tiny, thin neck. If I compared that to the Player, to me that neck felt a lot better. Also: every Squier I tried had fret levelling problems. (so where you lucky? I also send back a 40th anniv Squier P because not only it needed fretwork, the nutslots where so f...ed up that it needed a new nut, but it also had a slight twist in the neck, which is not the same as a bow that you can solve with the truss rod) So strange you did not mention this tiny feeling neck ... What I also think: Squiers out of the box, most of the time the strings are so high that chances are smaller to see if a bass has fret problems, so to make a good comparison, I think it's fair to first give them all the same kind of action?

Awesome video at the right time as Ive been looking at adding a short scale to my collection and ultimately like the mustang over the others. This video comparing them all together really solidified my opinions even though they are completely subjective. I liked basses 3,5 and 6 the most. I have 2 Jazz and 2 Precision basses and ultimately consider myself a P guy. I am not interested in a PJ configuration so 5 is out and between 3 and 6. The Vintera II sounds and looks awesome but personally I dont feel its worth 3x the price of the Squier CV. For me the Squier is the best value. Thanks for the video!

Would you say that a Player PJ Mustang (at stock) can reach the low midrange depths of a P Bass? Or would it require some mods? Or no mods to a Mustang could approach the inherent sound quality of a P Bass due to a P Bass's longer neck/single pup config?

Crazy, I like the PJ the best, but hey I am a P Bass Player so maybe I am just used to the tone. You ask why anyone would want a Mustang that sounds like a P Bass, if he or she could just take a P bass. True, but maybe someone like you has an injury, or generally smaller hands, and so has the opportunity to sound almost like playing a P bass with a short scale.

wow, the american performer was easily the worst to me. i usually have expensive taste! i noted the nice harmonics in there, but it didn't have the lower end character i want. my pick was the fender pj, then the jmj sig, then the vintera - or thereabouts, depending on mood, etc. those three were close. i didn't love the squier bronco but it didn't sound bad. edit: after seeing the whole thing, yeah, i agree with the pj assessment. i think the vintera would be my pick overall then. i have a vintera jazz and i love that thing.

Those Squier Classic Vibes man. They just dust everything in their price bracket. The gigging musician's choice imo. For me the Vintera ran away with this one, but that Classic Vibe is steal at that price. Between Epiphone and Squier these days I don't know why anyone would pay mainline Gibson or Fender prices anymore. Great comparison.

Hi there. You are right: there are a lot of great builders out there! This video was specifically about Fender mustangs though. As far as the giveaway goes, I’d love to ship it anywhere but I am having to pay the shipping personally and I can’t pay high international shipping fees. Thanks for watching, I hope you stick around despite your frustrations.
