I've never been a Gibson acoustic fan but there's good reason why so many singer songwriters play them. That guitar sounds utterly fantastic!

Thanks Jeremy, that was fun. I have a somewhat similar 61 J45. Different war and different battle scars, but it also sounds awesome. 2000 would be a steal for this guitar.

To me there isn’t anything that sounds like an old Gibson. I’m not a Martin fan boy. There’s just something about the Martin tone that I don’t like. But an old Gibson? Oh yeah. And this one hit that sound for sure. Nothing about it that can’t be fixed.😬

I bought a new j-45 in 2020. I went to check out a martin d-18 to go with my d-35 and hd-28 because I wanted a mahogany body dreadnaught. I played both and brought the j-45 home. Sorry martin. The action was too high and just didn't have the tone I expected from the d-18 but the j-45 was great all around in tone and playability. No set up required and beautiful to look at. It's a good complement for my martins. Only regret is I'm 74 years old and will never hear the full potential this guitar has. I hope one of my grandkids will.

Just bought a Gibson L-00 Rosewood Burst and it came this morning... Lovely guitar. I'll never get rid of this or my D-15M Martin. No finish issue or anything, everything has been perfect on it. The only thing was the battery pack for the pickup came loose and was rattling around. Don't know if it happened in shipping or if they forgot to velcro it back once they checked it and restrung it and set it up for me. Other than that I love the dang thing. I put Martin Retro Monels on it. Have heard a lot of people don't like those strings on rosewood guitars and love them more on Hog back and sides. Don't know yet how I like them. Going to let them break in a bit first before I decide. Didn't care for them on my D-15M, they mellowed it out too much. But I have them on 2 cheaper guitars and love them on those. Just depends with these strings I think. What are your thoughts on the Monels Jeremy?

I was 16 in '72 and saw a Hummingbird,used, for about $1700.00 and wondered "why?" Now I kick myself. I finally got a D18GE for $2000.000 new,when my favorite music store was closing. This sounds great and I was 5 years old in '61.

I have the twin sister to that guitar. ‘61 Cherry J45. Complete with neck break, side crack and modified bridge. Does the serial number have 4 or 5 digits?

I think it is mellowed out over the years since I sold it. I remember it being pretty stark and red.

Two questions. 1) What is your take on the J45/50 slope shoulder vs Dreadnought? 2)What is the monetary difference in value between a J45 and J50?

the only way is to try both. i've got a 66 j45 i've had since the 70's, i have a 2016 J35 i bought a couple of years ago, they both sound brilliant, the main difference being the j45 has a skinny neck, like an electric, and the j35 has a wider neck, more like epiphones. the j45 will cost about 1/3 as much more than a j35, but they are really similar guitars. J45 are sunburst generally, and J50 are natural, they go for around the same sort of prices depending on the year and condition, J50 tend to go for a bit more as the sunburst, or any kind of paint job on a gibson, is usually to cover up poor quality wood, or rather it will not be the best quality wood, obvious;y natural finish means you can see how good a tree you got. usually they are mahogany, (spruce top) but there are occasional rosewood back / sides to be had, depending on the year again. anything pre 1970 and anything post 1990 will be good, unless you want "a collectable" from gibsons "experimental years". i buy everything on ebay and sell whatever i don't like, so far no problems after 50-60 guitars coming and going - and some lovely "keepers".

@@JeremySheppard thanks, it’s a 1968 Yamaha FG-300 old but sounds amazing. I guess the K&K would do less to it structurally, I think I’ll get that one.
