I wanted to see what people missed when they were panning British Columbia's most impressive Panning Reserve, Tranquille Creek in Kamloops. So, I took my metal detector and went over all the workings I could find along the river. Detected peoples tailings, detected there left over pits, and detected the cleared areas of bedrock. What I found was impressive and surprising. Check it out!

detectors are not 'excavating devices', and technically not even prospecting nor mining devices... it's electronic equipment, that vaguely defines soil types (elements) for those properly trained to understand their usage - in the right hands a detector 'may' help to guide you 'where-to' implement prospecting methods - at that point you then apply the excavating methods 'as posted' - it's not a game and there's no such thing as 'cheating', it's a piece of equipment that if used correctly can help to mitigate against harmful environmental methods

Mr. T Rex, If there's maybe ten thousand times more loose sediment sitting along the banks when the flood comes through, because everyone can dig the banks to their heart's content, there's maybe ten thousand times more brown crap in the water downstream. Think about how different the water looks when the river is high for the wet season, and how it looks when there's been unusual amounts of erosion upstream, like when you see hundred year floods, wildfires in the watershed, landslides from incompetently done roadcuts, etc. Rivers get like that sometimes no matter what humans did, and it kills fish, but allowing unlimited bank-cutting that's guaranteed to make even a normal winter high water level kill fish is as childish and short-sighted as pooping in the bath tub.

@@trex9194 There are about twenty different hobbies that have been just about completely shut down by people who were too immature to accept some limitations on shared spaces and resources. 4 wheeler guys tearing up meadows get intended trails closed. People ignoring burn bans in the backcountry in the summer get firepits in fire rings in paved campgrounds banned. Not only are the environmentalists right, but pretending they're not is what's going to get all prospecting shut down by being short-sighted and stubborn.

I can't tell you how many times I've had the cops called on me while detecting. People just get suuuuper pissed for whatever reason. Only once was I actually not allowed to MD. At a "wildlife reclamation area" on the side of my town. I live maybe 4 or 5 miles from it. But you are allowed to fish, hunt, swim, BBQ, walk your dogs, jet ski, but not detect. The vast majority of stuff I dig up is beer cans, broken bottles, lead, shotgun shells, fishing lures, and just a TON of trash. So lord forbid I go pic up and remove a bunch of trash on a wild life reclamation area. Just doesn't make sense.

People assume when they see someone detecting, that every single hole in the area was left by the detectorist! So a LOT of places have laws against detecting, instead of against leaving holes, duh. As long as you show how you've filled in your holes, and all the trash you are REMOVING from the environment, 9 times out of 10 you are allowed unless there is already a law for that city. Seems getting permissions on private land is still easier than hoping whatever authority shows up isn't a poo head that day.

I understand Dan’s thought process but look at the process in a whole. A metal detector is not just a small 6” coil and a hand shovel to others. Like Dan said every time he shows where he finds gold,It get demolished. Now imagine if they all of a sudden realize you can use a metal detector. Well some metal detectors have coils that are a lot bigger and detect a LOT deeper. Multiply that times how many ppl all of a sudden see they can use a detector and the creek is done for. Dan got lucky not getting in any trouble. I love the guy and know he means no harm but some ppl who watch him are a whole different breed

Love your videos, Dan! When it comes to the Panning Reserve and metal detectors, is the reason for the limitation just environmental impact, or is it to reserve an area for folks who want to pan, with the primary factors on finding gold being your ability to read the river to figure out where to dig, your panning ability, and your willingness to move material by hand? If the former, then allowing a detector makes sense. If it is the latter (or some variation there of - “levelling the playing field”), then excluding metal detectors makes sense. Either way, a case can be made for and against the detector, depending on the goals of the rules. Thank you for asking the question and reporting the results!

Many years ago I was giving tours on a large gold dredge that had been active up until the early 1950s. Part of the tour was a gold panning demo. My grandfather had worked on the dredge, and thus knew of the small room under the bucket line where the "slop" from the line had spilled. That little room was gold rich to say the least. I would pan it out, then take the gold to the creek and salt the panning demo area. I must have sold a few hundred gold pans for the small store on the highway.

I thought in the video you stated that area wasn't "a recreational panning area", it was land that simply couldn't have a claim staked on it by anyone. If the area isn't classified as "a recreational panning reserve" then presumably the rules that apply to those won't apply to that area? If that is the case, then all the inspector has done is clarify what the rules are for areas other than where you were detecting?

I am not taking a position on this, I'm just thinking. Maybe the motivation for a no metal detector rule isn't environmental impact, but fairness instead? Maybe they want people who can only afford a shovel and a pan to be able to have an equal shot? Basically they're trying to make the playing field equal? Again, it's just a thought, not an argument.
@Arkved1978
@Arkved1978 2 года назад
I am curious as to when the rule was written. It could be that it was written before metal detecting was really as prevalent as it is today since detectors used to be prohibitively expensive. Not as much now, though they aren't exactly cheap either. I tend to agree with Dan on this one though, it seems like the general idea is to not have an outsized negative impact on the environment, hence why they list sluices, high bankers, etc on the "not allowed" list. I'd be interested to see what an inspector in the field would say to someone in that area that had a metal detector. If they'd actually tell the person it's not allowed or if they'd use common sense and acknowledge that by using the detector, the person isn't digging huge holes and greatly impacting the environment. I hope there is some follow up to this discussion on a future video. It would be nice to understand if the purpose of the rule was for environmental purposes, or as you indicated, maybe making it level playing field for everyone, and thus truly only a pan and shovel is allowed. But then to Dan's point, is a small scraper tool allowed? wire brush? snuffer bottle? hand scoop? waders? etc etc, hopefully it's about the environmental impact, at least then common sense can at least somewhat play a part and things like small hand tools (scraper, brush, scoop) and metal detectors would be allowed, just no power equipment or sluice boxes etc.
@aaronmicalowe
@aaronmicalowe 2 года назад
I doubt it. Rules aren't made for fairness. They're made to protect something. And the fairness argument can be turned on it's head. What about the guy who only has a high banker but lost all his pans? It's too open to interpretation in a way that would damage the environment more. Unfortunately, banning metal detectors means that people will resort to brute force prospecting which results in a lot more damage to the river.
@dodgeit3014
@dodgeit3014 2 года назад
That makes no sense. Take todays logic out of it. These rules were written along time ago. Someone with no job could move a lot more ground then someone who works a full time job. That full time job might just allow someone more money to buy better things. With the way you say it everyone should have the same pan and shovel as well. Even in something as old as panning/gold prospecting someone has to bring todays woke bs to it, not a argument.

I've been watching for a while and am a subscriber but I only just remembered an experience that might have keyed my interest. Some friends and I were on a mountain biking camping trip somewhere in the Western Sierra Nevada. While we were camping there a wedding was taking place between two panners who had fallen in love. The rings were made from gold from the very river where the wedding occurred on a bride spanning it. With everyone waiting on the bridge, the bride was having a freakout. She needed her shoes which were in the rented model T and some reassurance to walk out on that bridge. And I as a total stranger had the honor of helping her with both. I hope that the two of you are still happy.

Well done Dan. Love that ya took the time to clarify a rules situation. We have the same discussions here in MI. In Michigan rule interpretation goes the route of if it isn't expressly forbidden, it's allowed. Looking forward tonthe next video!

I feel like you have a good point with the detector inevitably causing you to cause less damage. If I had to guess, they are probably worried that with a metal detector it will cause you to spread out and affect more areas with the same level of digging that people do without a detector which I think you’re right in that using a detector wouldn’t cause that.

I found this on the Government web site. Recreational hand panning is strictly limited to the following tools: hand pan and shovel. Recreational hand panning does not include the use of a metal detector. Great Video Just like all of them you won my subscription a long time ago.
