I got a ratchet socket is stuck in my engine while replacing spark plugs! I thought I had to take apart the intake. Don't panic. This is how I got it out. 9/16" socket diameter .773" is ok. 0/16" socket diameter .812 is not ok. How to pull the socket out with a paint can opener and a nail.

I appreciate your video. I've been working on this thing for an hour trying to get this spark plug socket out and as soon as I washed your video I tried your paint can tool method and it came right out

I’m glad it was useful for you. When it happened to me, my eye started twitching. I went through my toolbox , not finding any solution. Good thing my work surface was messy that day, I saw the paint can opener and the shape was perfect to be strong enough and also a handle. Bingo! A tool was born!

You’d think the spark plug socket would be designed to counter this, but it isnt… if you guys don’t have a spark plug socket. You can use a 5/8 socket just put a circle shaped piece of paper in the socket, and screw/unscrew your spark plug. Stay mindful your socket will probably still get stuck but if you have some needle nosed players it should come right out. Thanks for the video btw man

@email872 thanks for the reply. I totally agree there should’ve been a counter for this already.

Way to lead into Part II: Getting your socket out from behind the engine! Also, why did YT just recommend this to me now? It would have been useful back in March when I changed my plugs on my Kia and had the same problem. =P

Maybe it’s my tags or description not matching your search / query. Do you remember what you searched for?

Thank you i looked this up right as i was having the same problem… got mine out with a right angle pick and a screwdriver… same idea though… and it WAS a spark plug socket, was just so snug down in the hole though.

Hi schoon5m, yeah finding anything durable enough to with stand the force of pulling up the socket is key. Ratchets need to have a socket lock. My luck, it will be invented tomorrow.

Funny thing is I’m working on an Infiniti as well. Same thing happened. I’m only 20 seconds into video at this point.

I found that older well made sockets have a larger diameter, so I got a cheap newer socket and that does not get stuck and I’m labeling it for Infiniti.

That happened to me more than once so here is my fix: First I check to make sure there is/are indent inside the spark plug socket where the extension or ratchet goes in and if the indent is too shallow I use a Dremel grinder to enlarge/deepen the indent more, then I use a locking extension to lock the socket in place. No more stuck socket down the spark plug channel.

Great idea with the dremel. Thanks !

That's a regular 9/16 deep well socket you should be using a 9/16 spark plug socket you'll notice that it's a lot thinner so you wouldn't run into this issue

Thanks for the tip. My sockets range from 3 different sets. Sometimes I use what I find first.

If that socket is a short one what can i do , plug stick out of the socket
@lotsofhobbies
@lotsofhobbies 10 месяцев назад
Idk about a short socket. That would have never removed the plug in the first place. Anyway, you would need a third implement to raise the socket off the plug like bailing wire with a hook bent at the end. Should be thin enough to fit in the square and strong enough to lift while you get the can opener in place.

I knew someone who did that same thing took the whole top of the motor off ting to get the thing out. he was using a spark plug socket ( thin walled deep "spark plug socket" ) and all. we was there all night trying to get that ficker. tried the paint can opener. tried thick wire. tried siliconing another socket to the top since a spark plug socket has the hex head on the top

Thanks for letting me know the actual name lol. I just know it opens paint cans and other stuff. Now it also helps retrieve sockets.
