Hello, my name is Shelby and I am a potter based in Victoria, Australia.
In this vlog, I am taking you through my third week of prepping for two major events. This week I really feel the small kiln dramas. I have my finished work bottlenecking and its making it tricky to keep track of where I am up too. I make a bunch of Aussie Animals, Mushroom Butter dishes and a series of Cottage Wildflowers. Throughout this video I take you behind the scenes of all parts of the process with lots of Timelapse's. The Timelapse's make it a little easier to keep focused on the work at hand whilst being able to show you what I am up too.
I hope you like these videos as a little something different whilst I prepare and I will have my regular goodness back soon once I get through some of this work!

I got myself a kiln in a similar way - I bought a small old one with broken kilnsitter controller and then converted it to use my self built contoller. I basically got a decent usable kiln for a third of the cost of a new one.

She makes too much awesome stuff now, it's so gross. To be someone who can be so creative on a more massive scal... ok I can't do this anymore haha. So glad you got the new kiln up and running. Don’t know how you would keep up with 60 pieces a week! I have a glass kiln and confess it is just a hobby. It takes many hours to heat up, hold the temp and cool down. Can’t wait to see you first glazed pieces from your kiln!

Could you take on an art student from Uni in an intership(unpaid) capacity for some extra help? Also how about carts on wheels for you daily work, then they will be in carts already to take to the events?

Oh that sounds like such a lovely idea but they would be helping me with profitable activities so that is illegal to not pay them. At the moment I have a studio assistant who helps. It would take a lot of time to train someone up which would then take time away from my making. So that will be something for after the markets. The carts sound like such a good idea! I might need to have a brainstorm about how I am going to get all the work too and from!

But other than that I don't really know many other artist content creators that have a similar vibe to my content style that regularly post on RU-vid! I also don't get much time anymore to watch other content creators 🥲 I would love if others could suggest some ideas in the comments!

I enjoy Jazza, Tabletop Time, Insert Art and Aussie Crafter. Insert Art and Aussie crafter have a closer vibe to Shelby’s than Jazza. Tabletop Time has a role play channel and a miniatures and terrain channel, each of which are kind of different from each other. The mini painting channel is the more low-key and process-focused one.

I don’t know why so many of the people here are into bearing so famed serious and have this oh so serious feeling to the point I don’t like to go to shows any more. Ignorance is correctable, stupidity isn't. I try to remember this when dealing with comments from uninformed sources. Often I find that people make these comments because they want to engage, but they are just awkward. If I can be kind and help them to understand the process, they are happy (and buy stuff). Of course, some are just know-it-all-blow-hards who just want to poison the waters. Grey rock. Give them grey rock.

Hello! Im SO excited and happy for you about ALL the wonderful things happening for you!! You are going to accomplish your goals, for sure!! Especially having your larger kiln up and running! I am wondering if you are using a vent system that is for the purpose of helping you achieve even heat flow through the kiln? It works really well doing that. It sits under the kiln. Another thing I learned to do was end the top of the glaze firings with a shelf on top for a couple of reasons. One, with the vent drawing air through the tiny holes in the lid, if there was a piece under one of the holes, it caused a problem. And second, it protects the pieces from any possible pieces of flaking kiln material from adhering to the glaze. Before using the vent, the top of my kiln seemed to run cooler and more even after using the vent. Good luck with all you've got on your schedule, wishing you great success!! I would like to thank you .....i just found a kiln for my .... old new hobby.... its a Older model.... i have not tried it jet but my husband said if it dosen't work he will fix it ... i only paid 200$ us ... and i got some molds too ... im so excited.... i cleaed out my extended build... so i can use it as a shop.... i do have to have a electrician come and put lines in .... ❤❤

I got a similar kiln but really old when I first started my home studio. I didn’t have a digital controller, only a kiln sitter. My kiln died 3 years ago, and I haven’t replaced it. So my hobby has stagnated. You are inspiring me to restart!! ❤❤

So happy you got your new kiln. Just so you can learn from my mistakes and i am sure you already know, but try and get your props on top of each other. I didn't when I first started using my new second-hand kiln, and I literally killed a couple of shelves learning the hard way unfortunately 🤦‍♀️
