I've considered getting an Interstellar tattoo because its one of my favorite movies or getting the space shuttle hatch. I used to get up super early on school nights or run home and watch NASA TV for hours when there was a launch. The space shuttle is such a huge inspiration and is one of the reasons I've had a life long obsession with space. I'm even working towards getting a PR job for Nasa or some space related journalism.

I agree wholeheartedly with you about the Rogallo wing. Back when NASA was trying out that approach I also gave it a try, building a small model and test dropping it from the high rise student housing at Northrop Institute of Technology. It was just totally cool technology.

The invention of the Rogallo wing made it possible for so many to have personal flight. The Rogallo wing is the basis for most modern hang gliders. Francis Rogallo was a visionary.

Convair got in the Rogallo act about the same time. One of the proposed recovery options for the "crew capsule" on the F-111/FB-111 project was a Rogallo wing system. In the end, simple parachites were used instead. The remaining FB-111 in Air Force inventory still use the "crew capsule" system, where a chunk of the cockpit separates from the aircraft in case of emergency. The Grumman rebuilt EF-111A ELInt/AEW aircraft were converted back to standard ejection seats.

Amy, the TTV-2 is now on display in the National Space Centre, Leicester, U.K. If you're ever in the country, you're welcome to come and see it. My research tells me that it did most of the successful flying - and the display at the Centre owes a lot to you bringing the Paraglider story out of the historical wilderness! So thanks!

there's nothing "weird" about the US space program in my eyes Amy. I'm just thankful you have the knowledge and passion to reach out and explain the exhausting tasks the NASA has been through to get our men and women to and back from space. it's such an intense feeling to see a spacecraft rocket to the heavens and yet return safely. thank you again for all you do with vintage space!

The Gemini program was such a hotbed of historical innovation and the paraglider landing concept (although sidelined) was brilliant and exciting. I love the tattoo! From following your videos and writing over the years, it's the perfect reflection of a big part of who you are! 😎

I can imagine future body art that could glow and/or move through a sequence of images like a gif . Tiny subdermal electronics would control it. So Amy, imagine your paragliding capsule becoming animated to show that sequence that you showed us. Pretty cool, huh!

I'm so glad I found Vintage Space earlier this week. I've been a space nerd ever since I watched Sputnik 1 fly over my neighborhood in 1957. A few years later my Dad worked on the Apollo guidance system and got to attend the Apollo 11 launch in 1969. He told me a lot of inside stories about the space program, but the most exciting part of it was when he told us we were going to the moon (we found out before it was publicly announced). At the time it was widely considered that an attempt at a moon landing wouldn't take place for at least 100 years. Imagine the bravery it took for everyone involved to make such a bold statement about something that had never been done. Contrast the political courage it took for President Kennedy to announce that we were going to the moon compared to the spineless weenies in our government today. You can check it out: President Kennedy's speech at Rice University in 1962. It'll give you goose bumps.

To be fair, recovery of the spacecraft after ocean splashdown, isn't really as costly as it sounds, because the vessels and crews are already being paid for, as a continuing military service expense. The taxpayer would be funding the vessels and crews, whether they were recovering a space capsule, or sailing around the oceans, on patrol or exercises.

This "Bat Glider", as it was known by the engineers at McDonnell, spent twenty years in my dad's garage after it was discarded by MAC. I flew it, towed behind a VW , several times. L/D was pretty low so it behaved more like a parachute than a glider.

Amy, if you love the Rogallo wing concept so much, you should try hang gliding! Today's gliders in the sport are all direct descendants of the Rogallo wing. You can go out for just one single flight so you don't have to actually learn, there are many clubs and associations that will take you up for a tandem flight with an instructor, he/she will do the actual flying - and if you want, I 'd bet they'll let you try the controls if you tell them your story! I flew hang gliders in the late 70s and early 80s before finally moving on to airplanes. I think you'd love the experience, give it a thought!

+Vintage Space -- The first time I noticed that tat I said out loud, to myself (don't ask) "that looks like a Rogallo wing!" Then I remembered you had done a video about the NASA Rogallo and suspected that was what it was although I hadn't noticed the capsule hanging below it at first. I've a few tats that I got many decades ago but I still love them and I agree that good body art can be awesome! Congrats on yours!

I love tattoos and already have a few. I've been thinking of a vintage style tattoo with a rocket (maybe Saturn V) surrounded by red roses, and a banner saying "Ad Astra Per Aspera". I'm sure you know about this quote meaning "A Rough Road Leads to the Stars", it is a tribute to the doomed Apollo 1 crew. Those are words to live by regardless of the context, if you're resilient enough you will reach your life goals.

Private Pilots around the world who fly ultralights and microlights benefit directly from the research done on this Gemini technology. NASA doesn't only focus on Space but also aviation and wing technology innovation. So much of this technology has been rolled into current flying aircraft.

G'day, Yay Team ! I recall seeing your Tat. & trying to freeze-frame it, because it looked like an early Rogallo-Wing, but I couldn't see either an A-Frame nor any Parallel Bars, and I couldn't see sufficient detail to be able to identify (the other thing) as being the Gemini Capsule under a Rogallo-Wing with an Inflatable Airframe & Parachute-Shrouds... Back in the 1990s I was the Launch-Controller/Low-Speed Aeronautics-Consultant at Aerotowing Adventures Australia..; and as unlikely as it sounds, for about 5 years I seem to have been something like a "World-Leader" in safely controlling the Aerotow-Launching of Rogallo Hang-Gliders behind 3-Axis Ultralights, in 1997 my "Lockout Index" was mandated as "Industry Standard..." by the Oz Dep't Of Transport..., so I enjoy seeing anything which increases the public consciousness of the origins of the Rogallo-Wing. In my "Personal Aeroplanology Playlist" there's a video titled "Aero-Towing Rogallo Hang-Gliders... The Lockout Index..." ; if you're interested in what's difficult about Aerotowing a Rogallo-Wing off the Ground, when it has no Yaw-Control... Have a good one, ;-p Ciao !
