My 2 cents: Just try to identify the key words he uses and google it. You'll get to learn and understand much more about it. If you're like me, an older person trying to learn how to play the guitar, things like "which pickups might work better for this or that music style" might be irrelevant. But if you want to create your own sound, your own music... it's part of the "language" you want to speak and how you will communicate with the people who will listen to your music. Than, it becomes really important. Try to understand where you want to go, what are your goals and what you want to achieve on your journey. It will help you determine what is really important for you to learn.

I bought a Strat and a Tele at the same time in 93. I thought i was a strat guy and hated the look of a tele but over the years the tele has become my #1 because it's so reliable, versatile and easy. You just tune it and go. put it on the bridge pick up and you are ready for rock, middle pickup you're in funk territory, and then the neck pickup with the tone all the way down and you are able to swing some awesome jazz tones. I saw a video of myself on stage and that tele looks and sounds bad ass. The strat still gets some love because nothing sounds like a strat but for me the Tele is what i am going to go to war with.

The tele bridge pickup make me think nostalgia. Simply because of all the 90s country music that’s been fed through my ears my whole life. It just makes me think about being 7 years old and hearing my family playing those songs in the car. I always loved the country singers from that era but the guitar players who would solo on those tracks would, and still do blow me away. Ik the time it makes me think of wasn’t that long ago bc I’m only 17 now but, still those songs and players always manage to take me back.

Mike, this is a great video. This topic and situation has been a recent thing for me. I went from not owning a single Tele (had a few over the years but just never really liked them and sold them all after they sat in the stand too long), then about 2 years ago..I got a tele that was transformative. My gateway tele. I'm not a country player at all. The Strat was my everything (yes, I also really didn't like the bridge pickup), but it just felt and sounded the best. Now, I have 4 Teles. Stil have my favorite Strats, but they're outnumbered. The sound (even on the neck pickups) and the response the Tele gives me, has me picking it up almost 80% of the time now.

Hi Mike! I own a few different types of guitars, but my Tele is my favorite. It's my most versatile guitar, and my "if I can only have one to cover all bases" guitar at gigs or recording situations. I'm also not a country player. It's a wonderful ax that's brilliant not only because of the bridge pickup, but also in its simplicity. Overdrive on the bridge, switch to the neck and back off on the volume and you have a cleanish tone that often prevents the need for channel switching. That said, there's no need to consider yourself a "Strat guy" or a "tele guy". There's no reason why you can't enjoy both. I have Fenders, Gibson's, and other makes as well. They're all enjoyable and they all bring something different to the table. I personally like them all. That's the fun of having different types. Sometimes I feel like playing one, sometimes the other.

But I am a one guitar at a time player. I personally feel like they get lonely if I don't take them to a gig. I had played a super-strat style Alvarez HSH guitar for 25 years and some things were wearing out. So I got an SG really cheap, but it required a lot of work so I got a PRS SE Standard 24 and totally fell in love with it. And the next year I got a G&L ASAT Classic Tribute and totally fell in love with it. And recently I found a Player Strat that fit my budget and yes, I totally fell in love with it. And I learned how to replace parts on the SG and I totally fell in love with it. Now my problem is that I have 5 guitars that I love to play. I don't have enough time to play each one as much as I would like. I'm finding that I need to play one guitar at least 2 days consecutively to adjust to each guitar's quirks. But I love playing them all. And I can't imagine having any more guitars - yet.

I'm an S-oriented player. I like playing Fender/Squier strats, Strat-inspired guitars like the Yamaha Pacifica 612, and Superstrats like the Jackson Soloist or Kramer Striker. I'd highly recommend all strat players to have a good superstrat on the side, as you get a familiar feeling guitar with extra punch to it, usually in terms of extra frets, powerful humbuckers, and Floyd Rose or other crazy trem bridges. Some decent superstrats to look for are the Ibanez RG, Jackson Soloist, Charvel So-Cal style 1, Kramer Striker, and Schecter C-6.

Strat or Tele, there is something magic about Fender single coils. I like my Les Paul. I like my PRS. I love my Strats. I love the sound of a Tele but the strat design and ergonomics are, at least for me, perfection. My first guitar was a Fender Highway 1 Strat, wine red. All I've done is upgrade to locking tuners and swap the pickups out to Bill Lawrence Keystone pickups. It's probably the most "inexpensive" guitar I have next to my others... but I always come back to it as my favorite. But I also believe in variety and like having different feels and tones at home. Different guitars inspire you to play differently.

I knew about them but was a set neck style guitar owner. I somehow ended up at Fender History there and started reading about The Man, Leo Fender, and the beginnings of Fender, the ruminations of what was to become the Telecaster, the one that started it all. All of it. It wasnt the first electric but from country to early rock, polkas, jazz, any kind of music style, no other electric guitar has crossed so many genres. The amps, notably The Fender Bassman 5F6-A, 1958 - 1961. The Holy Grail. Two weeks later I bought my first one. A 2008 MIM Tele. Midnight Wine. I had never ever played one, held one until I plugged it in my tube type Super Champ XD. When I hit that first chord, bridge position, and that Tele Twang rang thru my body, my teeth, my head, and I said to myself "Why did I wait so long to get one of these?" It really should be everyone's first electric guitar simply because of its simplicity.

I've got at least one of these myself. The Stratocaster is not a fender build; it was built for me by a friend that assembles it from generic parts. It has individual pickup selectors, which means I can get the quacky sound from the two outside pickups and loosely emulate the middle position on a Telecaster. The Telecaster itself *is* built by Fender, but it does not have traditional pickups. It is semi hollow and loaded with Seymour Duncan Soapbar P90s. Each of them has a place when I'm making music, and that really is the point of having one of each.

My first guitar is a 1993 3rd run Mexican Strat that has been modded with a freeway 10 position switch and that guitar is amazing but for heavier rock song is not my goto as it is bright and Shiney in it's tone. It just does not have the growl of a humbucker guitar. I do have a Swamp Ash Slick Tele which is heavier than sin but is a tonal beast! Everything from gritty tones to smooth creamy cleans and the my middle ground monster is my 2003 PRS Santana SE which just does everything well. It all depends on what I am playing. As long as you have the right tool for the job and it inspires you to play more and enables you to play better then you are golden. Mike , You are a guitar player......the instrument doesn't define you, your playing does.

You own both, and so do I. So we're "both" guys. You don't need to be in one camp. I played my SSH strat for 20 years, then I got my Tele, and I actually like the Tele better, but it's not the right tool for every job. For a gig where I need humbucker sometimes, and wammy occasionally, I still use the strat. I've also had a Les Paul for 27 years, but it mostly stays in the case. A recent purchase and new love is the G&L CLF RESEARCH DOHENY V12. Talk about versatile! But it doesn't feel as great in the hand as my Strat/Teles. I think it takes maybe 5 guitars to cover the major bases. Strat/Tele/LP/335 style/P90

I'd recommend that you add the mod that Gilmour added to his strats. When you flip to the bridge you can engage the neck pickup to give your bridge some warmth and it calms some of the spiky frequencies

I had a Squier HSS strat for 2 years and just recently got a Squier Telecaster. I definitely play each differently. My strat for lead lines, improve and blues. My Tele for more chordal riffs, indie songwriter sound, delay and chrous. It also lives is E flat or Open D

A hybrid that is mostly strat with the Tele bridge pickup/tele bridge would be sick. I always preferred how the Tele bridge sounded over the strat but always enjoyed how strats feel in addition to the middle and neck pick ups and having the five way selector. obviously it would be a lot easier just to put three Strat pick ups in a tele and that’s why it’s been done a lot more that way but I want a Stratocaster that can do funky shit in fourth position, get twang on the occasion I need it and just better dirt in the bridge like you mentioned

I usually play a Gibson LP or a strat. For fun I took my tele to a gig and played it all night (without first trying it out on our weekly sessions) and it was really a surprising experience. Quite satisfying.

My first electric guitar was a Strat and I was always disappointed because I wanted to play metal and punk believed that Strats were too wimpy for it. As such, my dream guitar was always a Les Paul. Until I picked up an American Special Tele. The Texas Special pickups in that thing were MEAN, but they cleaned up really nicely. My buddy who played a Les Paul through a Marshall was envious of how crunchy my Tele sounded through my Hot Rod. To this day, my AmSpec Tele is my standard by which I test every other guitar.

The instrument is just a vehicle for creativity. I love the Strat, the Tele, the this or that. I threw a Tele neck pickup in a EVH Wolfgang because I liked the sound of it, instead of the stock humbucker. It's just personal taste. The Telecaster has an .01 capacitor..to bleed of highs. It's all personal taste..and what motivates you to play. IMO. We all have one of those!

I'm a Fender player... you really need both! My first Strat is a Korean made Squier II that I bought used in the 90's and upgraded except it has the original pickups that are actually quite good! The other Strat and my Tele are both partscasters with players series necks... I love Strats and there are certain things they are uniquely qualified, but the Telecaster is the most utilitarian, capable of a wide range of things!

I really like that Tele, the pao-ferro sounds just a bit brighter than rosewood... with the burst it looks like an early 60's Custom, and it would look great with a tortiseshell guard!

I love the feel of my Tele (a MIM, bought in 1999)-light, compact. But I recently bought a Fender Mod Shop Strat, and it’s pretty fun-especially the tremolo bar, which I’ve always wanted in my life but never had. I mostly use the neck pickup for both, but even though they both now have noiseless pickups, they sound totally different. Anyway, when I want a single coil (ish) sound, I pick up whichever sounds right for the song.

I had the same thing happen this year. I started on an squier strat, moved to fsr strat then eventually got a Supro Hampton (s style but gold foil pickups) and the Supro was my main guitar for YEARS then randomly decided to buy a mexi tele for a price I couldn’t pass up and now I can’t put it down. The neck pickup isn’t as smooth and bell sounding as the s style but the bridge pickup is so much better that it makes up for it most of the time. Plus the middle position is wildly rangey with the use of the tone knob. Both guitars have their uses and I’m not calling either one my main guitar anymore, depending on the day I’ll go with one or the other but I never thought I’d say that until I got it

I love both and classify myself as a single coil fender style guy. Started with a Strat. But ended with the Tele. A Tele is more in your face. But I missed the in between positions. So I made my own Nashville style Tele. And still I miss the sweetness of a Strat often. My other electric is a semi hollow Tele with P90's. Also great for heavier sounds.

Mike I truly enjoy your music rants. I am about to drop some money on a tele. I guess I never thought of the question what kind of guitar player? Never saw it as a strat or tele. But then for years it’s mostly been acoustic. But appreciate your words of wisdom. I think if one is a professional guitar player , your going to need a dreadnought, a strat, a tele, and a Les Paul.

I had a Washburn (Lyon) tele copy a long long time ago (about 20years) and had so much trouble keeping it in tune, but I loved the tones and feel of it. Turns out the neck was twisted so I finally got rid of it and bought a MIM Roadhouse Strat that was my main guitar since 2015. My gf got me a Squier tele for xmas a few years back and even though it was a cheapie, it's my main go to when I pick up a guitar to play at home. What a difference in feel and tone over the Washburn or the strat. I still love to play the strat but most of the time the tele is the one I pick up. More like 70/30% tele/strat. I strung both of them with Rev Willie's 7s and I can still get some fat tones without working so hard on bends.

My first guitar was a Teisco E-110 from the late 1960s or early 1970s... and I would like to say I'm a Teisco player, but right now, I'm really loving all sort of guitars for all sorts of reasons. If you want something that will blow you away with how it should be worth more for what you're getting, check out the Ibanez AX-120. That's a heck of a guitar. I got mine in Baltic Blue Metallic, but there's something about it where it's halfway between a Les Paul and a Strat. And it's 100% cool.

I'm an LP guy and that was also my first guitar but I had a Tele a few years later. Recently sold that Tele to be able to afford my American Original 60s Strat and weirdly enough it's the first strat where "I get it". A few months of saving later i also bought the American Original 60s Tele and am quite pleased as well. So yes I'm still madly in love with the LP but I'm not sure I need to be just that. I play different stuff on each guitar and that's very enjoyable imo.

I have a Tele and a Gretsch semi hollow with a Bigsby as my two electrics and they cover a lot of ground for me. I think if I could only have one I'd have the Tele, but fortunately I don't have to choose. I occasionally have the urge to get a Strat, but I don't need one; the Tele does the Fender thing fine enough. I like that it's simple and straightforward and agree about the bridge. They're great guitars.

The Strat was built to be our sonic friend, the Tele was built to broadcast. We win either way. I really like the piercing rusty blade of a bridge single on a Strat with a bitchy fuzz hooked into it. And the Tele is so muscular. They're just great guitars.

I love pairing my t-type with a humbucker guitar like an sg. I'll get the big meaty open and barre chords on the sg, and then voice them differently on the tele as a contrast in a recording. The tele fills in the top end really nice and breathes life into a progression.

Hi Mike! Really enjoy to watch all your videos!! A have a question - how about to make this situation even worse?)) - how about to get some semihollow guitar like some gretsch or casino or some a`la sheraton kind of guitar (or something with p90 because humbuckers and singles you already has)? and for make it more distinct from you Les Paul - this thing should have some trem system - so it can be in same ( kinda same) category with Stratocaster). Whad do you think about it?)
