Whilst at Orvis Pursell Farms, I took advantage of an hour with Chuck Baker, their head wingshooting instructor to help me to understand how to shoot American clay targets.
Enjoy!

I simply love Chuck Bakers comment " you might not like this one but you're gonna get it" Bird hunting in USA is something to be experienced.

My wife gave me as a Christmas present last Christmas a lesson with Chuck. Looks like it’s time for me to drive down to Sylacauga and take that lesson. Great video!

“Shoot the beak” and “miss in front” were two early lessons I find myself going back to again and again. I’m as tall as Johnny. Focusing on swinging with the hips makes a ton of sense too. We do all this work on mount and fit, so it is logical not to change that geometry and eye position

I have shot guns all my life. I am a mediocre pistol shot, a 90% rifle shot, and a terrible wing shooter. When I was stationed at Clark Air Base, we decided to get some instruction in wing shooting. I remember this little Filipino guy who would look down the barrel and say in a quiet voice, "Too low Boss. Too slow Boss."

Between you Jonny and the Clay Lab guys a Shooting trip to the good old USA is now definitely on the Bucket List. I would however have to find something to persuade my wife(who doesn’t shoot) to accompany me. Fishing perhaps?

Basically he is using the same body dynamics as in archery, upper stays fixed, and hips do the moving, holding the anker point of the shootgun steady.

Most Midwest shooters start out with hand tossed birds and live game, Both are unpredictable in their flight and presentation And usually only waterfowlers get the high bird presentation . I didn't get serious into the clay target game until I was in my mid 20's. Youth shotgun sports have taken off in the US now and I'm glad to see it, It's safe and we are continuing the shooting tradition in a healthy way.

Instructors love to over complicate things. His lesson could have been summarized with aim small miss small… Grew up in England and moved to America. I don’t think the fundamentals between English and American shooting is much different. Slightly different looks and just need to learn the lead

I've never seen the point of trying to see the target clearly, even if it were possible which, it isn't. Because of the way our visual system works, the less detail we see the better. The less detail we see, the more time our brain has to do other things. The greater the use of our visual cortex, the less the brain will allocate to other duties. Americans seem to like embellishing the explanations of what they actually do.
