Should it be this difficult? Is matter thread / really making our life easier? What do you think? I'm looking forward to getting my Skyconnect to setup thread devices in home assistant! Remember to subscribe so you don't miss the next video!
I have yet to find a Video that describes the steps to successfully enable an Aqara P2 with Home Assistant. It just goes to highlight how immature this technology is.
what about after adding to homekit, creating a "flag" binary switch in HA, bridging it to HK, then uppon opening/closing the actual sensor, you press the switch position to on/off. Thus you are able to view the state also in HA, but being very janky.
I just recently got into this myself. I do have a SkyConnect but I don't think you actually need it (for Thread devices) if you already have Thread Border Routers. However, the more routers the better.
I went through the same thing a couple of weeks ago but using a Nest Hub Max. I could see it show up in HA (under the Thread integration) but clicking on it gave me no clues what to do next. I started reading about about having to install a 3rd party matter controller in docker but then gave in 😢
No, there is no need for thread or matter. They are IOT protocols... Direct access individual addresses IPV6... It's not for me😂 I'm a Zigbee kind of guy...
Zigbee has been working fine for me, need to understand the true value of upgrading all my sensor to thread /matter. As mentioned in the video I wasn't really that smooth. I imagine most of us have busy lives and we expect sensors like these to work out of the box :)
I have found that a lot of the instructions that are provided in HA seem to assume knowledge on the readers part that leaves a lot unsaid. In my pre-retirement job I required that each document that my crew wrote was handed to someone that had not been involved in the project to test if it was written with the information needed to complete the task. Often I found that the knowledgeable writer would leave out important details because they were obvious to them.
What did you used to do, if you feel comfortable sharing that. I do agree with you, I consider myself to have a better understanding of HA than the average user and appreciate that this was in beta, but all those options got me confused and none seem to work for me!
I myself have over 150 wifi, zigbee and z-wave devices connected to my HA instance. I can't think (at this time anyway) of any device that uses matter/thread that i can't get a zigbee, z-wave, wifi version of. That window/door sensor you had you can get a zigbee version that works with HA right out of the box. Until they come up with a device that ONLY uses thread/matter that I just have to have i'm going to wait until it matures a lot more.
