If you got hacked, we are all screwed

At this point I literally have AppLocker in windows set to block any executable or script from running that isn't EV certificate signed, unless I specifically add the executable hash to the whitelist. A pain in the neck but figured it would have me covered at least from accidentally running something I didn't realize was a script/executable. Now I even gotta worry about ancient signed files ಠ_ಠ. I wonder if there's a way to disable the exception and block anything signed before that date too.

Everyone here losing their minds over Mutahar 'getting hacked' when he straight out says he messes around with sketchy software as a hobby. If any of you think virtual machines, signed certificates, two-factor authentication, anti-virus software, general paranoia, or any of a number of other security measures are going to save you from yourself if you scoop digital gutter oil out of some dark crevice of the internet and slather it on your computer, you haven't been paying attention.

When i finally get hacked I'm going to feel zero self guilt. The amount of security experts and people that go to doom bunker levels of safety measures that still get hacked means theres no real chance of safety for the average person. Its like a guy i work with who grew up in a bad neighborhood, he leaves his car door unlocked and cash under the seat because, "if someone wants to get in to rob you or take your car, its ganna happen, locks does shit nothing.". Still going to lock my door and keep my PC safe though in hopes i don't run into an expert that laughs at my metaphorical locks.

To everyone terrified of Muta of all people being hacked: You are (PROBABLY) going to be fine on your average day on the internet, you will not have attempts made manually by some hacker to steal your info, hackers don’t really give much of a shit. However, if someone REALLY wants your information, it doesn’t matter how many walls and locked gates you put up, they have the resources, patience, and know how to get that information. That being said: You’ll probably be perfectly fine.

Honestly was about to comment the same thing as everyone else, “if Muta got hacked we’re all fucked”, but now that I think about it, it’s not all that shocking. Sure he knows a ton, but literal government agencies and the military get hacked all the time too. If they’re getting compromised, it’s no surprise that Muta can fall victim to it too. I think that the virtualisation as security is a fallacy, most hypervisors still have a virtual network adapter which connects the virtual machine to the host. Meaning that it is still possible to leverage exploits for vulnerabilities on the host machine. Even if Cloud virtualisation is used, you still use SSH/RDP which notifies the host of the source IP which can then be used to scan and exploit inside the VM

You may have gotten hacked, but your incident recovery was cleaner than the average bear, and they weren't able to take any actions on you. That's a win imo. It's one thing to get lucky and never have a hack attempted on you, another to practice successful defense

It's funny you made a point to illustrate enabling core isolation. Right before this I was reading a setup guide for a VR game that specifically recommended turning off core isolation to boost performance. I think I might just deal with the slight drop in horsepower, whatever that may be.

I also see a lot of blame get thrown on the pirating community for distributing shady software, and while not endorsing pirating, I can say that the people I've talked to and interacted with are very trustworthy and highly against malware getting shipped along with pirated content. Now while its not guaranteed that all pirated content is safe to download, its easy to throw the blame on them because of who they are and what they do. Its pretty easy to tell when a shady download for something appears, like a bad website design, sketchy popups, weird download buttons. AGAIN, not supporting piracy, just saying that maybe people should be more careful with other downloads, just because its legal and a valid download doesn't make it safe.

I did an arch install using Gnome and I love every second of it. All my driver's are open source I even have a amd rx6700xt Gpu and I have the newest AM5 hardware. Linux gaming with the Mesa drivers is truly amazing. It's ahead of windows by like two years lol. I will never go back to windows I don't even need to runs vm to use windows because I don't have to sacrifice much of anything I don't use Adobe or hardly any other proprietary software. So my transition wss extremely smooth. Every issue I found on Linux was easily solvable and easy to find with documentation. I pretty much safe on Linux and I know how to not go to sketchy sites. Basically I will never get a virus thru general means.

Well I guess this is my call to action to get my opsec back on track. I need to do an offline scan of windows and force myself to only use it for games, and do all my personal stuff on my Linux drive. Probably should do a fresh install of Windows anyway while I'm at it and back everything up again. It's PC Maintenance Time!

Hypervisor escapes exist. Malware will commonly check if an environment is virtualised. You may want to check for rootkits as you would be able visibly check if your bare metal system is different. Your threat model is probably different to most people I would suggest getting a new motherboard and hardware to be safe.

I remember when Easy Anti Cheat was added to VRChat that people where mentioning that this method could be used to bypass it.
