Thank you for the video, and the realistic expectations you give here. I love the detailed insights you provided. Like you, my first year undergrad GPA was garbage, but unlike you I didn't get straight A's afterwards, it improved a lot, but I didn't get 3.0 when I graduated, it was super close doe. I'm not even aiming for University of Tokyo, was aiming for Kyushu and the likes. In your honest opinion should I just give up trying to get a Master degree there? Thanks again for the video! :D
yess don’t give up!! i dont think there’s much information online about it so i want to make more videos 🥺 let me know if you have any video topics youd like to see 🥰
@@AllisoninTokyo it’s actually so funny i was stressing about the research plan and then this came up like what are the chances ?? honestly your experience in your program rn would be cool to hear about :)
I’m at the stage doing research and application and possible having to take gre. It’s expensive but I wanna do grad school abroad like Japan or Korea compared to us or home university. I will definitely apply for scholarships but it’s so much schools and broad so I made a list on what fits my programs
hi allison 😊 i just discovered your channel and i subscribed right away! i'm still looking for masters programs in tokyo but i feel totally unprepared by my undergraduate studies! i haven't done an undergrad thesis or anything 😭 you mentioned applying for several programs, but should i apply at several programs at several universities? 😅
thanks so much! 🥺 yeah!! for example i applied to two programs at todai and was going to apply to two at waseda. probably a variety of schools is best if you know what type of program youre looking for! 💕
I applied for Nagoya University this year but didn't make the interview. I'll admit I am not surprised. It's a highly competitive university and I didn't really know much about the professors and I knew some of the answers I was giving probably weren't preferable, but I had to be honest! I think I made a few mistakes as well so... I have to be careful next time!
Nagoya University is on my list for graduate school. Can you please tell me what type of questions you were asked during the interview? What was the whole process like?
Hi thank u so much I am from Germany and I am the 8th grade and I was crap at school now I am so serious about school and I wanna go to the university of Tokyo
Hi Allison. My situation is unusual. I am a retired lawyer who returned to graduate school, more for purposes of scholarship than employment. I graduated UCLA in 1975, and Southwestern University School of Law in 1980. I have extensive experience as a litigator. I recently completed two graduate courses in sociology, and a graduate seminar in history, at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. I received 'A's in each class. I have been developing a thesis that involves Japanese culture and its possible influence on youth culture in the United States. I have some insight into Japanese culture and religion by virtue of the fact that I have been an independent practitioner and student of Nichiren Buddhism for most of the past half-century. I wish to study cultural anthropology in Japan and am trying to find an English PhD program that will offer sufficient flexibility that will allow me to continue working towards a graduate degree while focusing mainly on my research project, with as few required classes as possible. Can you offer any suggestions? I appreciate the advice that you gave in your video. It all made very good sense. I hope you are enjoying life in Japan.
It can mean different things depending on your field, for me I mean like internships and preparing for a thesis and getting to know professors better (for a recommendation letter) 😊
Hi Allison, love your channel! I just recently got accepted into GPSS-GLI in Tokyo University and is going to start the programme in September this year. Just wondering how is life in general? Whether you are able to meet a lot of international or mainly japanese friends at Tokyo University or a mixture of both, and do you live in a rent apartment outside or student dorms? Thanks!
Hi thanks so much and congrats!!! My friends are almost all international but that’s because of corona and we are online 😅 I think things will be better for you by fall! I live in an apartment (tour is on my channel 😊), I’d say about 1/4 of my cohort live in the dorms!
Hii, my name is Isabela, I’m from Brazil, my English is not perfect, so I didn’t understand the connection part in 1:40. Can you please explain? Like you can’t go to Tokyo University if you live in another country, or you have to go to somewhere first, like a “special school”? Also, what is graduation school? Sorry for asking too much, have a good day
How did you even begin to research universities and what programs to apply to? Was there a certain system you used or site that helped narrow your interests?
I worked my way from the top 😂 So I looked at all the English language programs the top 5 or so schools in Japan offered and went through the ones in my field one by one 😬 Schools should have a page of all the English programs they offer! Also the JPSS has tonnnnnns of information!!
@@AllisoninTokyo Thank you. After I watched your video I discovered JPSS with a quick google search. It's reassuring to know you used it as a resource too!
Hi ma'am! Do you have to defend your thesis/research by the end of your grad school? Is it a requirement to defend your paper? Hope you're having a blast! ❤
I'm wondering how difficult it will be for me to get into the University of Tokyo; they have the program I want, but my current university doesn't do grades. On the flip side, we do a lot of hands-on projects and I will have a transcript of 40+ pages--when I graduate with my bachelor's--of professor writings about my work, but I am concerned the lack of grades will be a put-off for Japan's Top University.
I would directly email the admissions department and ask about this! It seems like a pretty unique situation but if you're able to quantify it in grades somehow they would probably accept it 🧐
Hi Allison, Do you know anything about the PIRS (Post graduate research non degree) program? I was interested in applying for that. I was also confused about the terms as it starts in April or October
what about an undergraduate application? like your coming from high school and applying to different Japanese universities is it the same, similar, or very different? and for any referral letters would they be sent to a translator of programs you want to apply to?
hi allison! do you have any recommendations for backup universities in japan? im applying to todai but not sure which schools would be good safety nets
Hello Allison! I was wondering whether Japan usually has scholarship offers in the Linguistics major? I will be getting my bachelor's degree this July and I was thinking about the possibility of studying my master's there.
Yes!! A lot of scholarships are actually targeted at nationalities rather than specific field of study! Of course there’s some that are only for engineering and etc, but you’ll definitely be eligible for some! Side note, I have found out a lot of scholarships are only for Asian students so if you’re from Asia you’re set, otherwise it can be a little bit more difficult, but definitely not impossible!
great video! thank you so much. I have a question, did you have to go through an oral examination step to enter Tokyo University? Because I'm currently in the last phase in the admission process to Rikkyo University, and I don't know what to except from that.
Hi Allison! First of all thank you for providing such great information through your channel:D Actually i have one question about eniglish base program in japan university. Since i can't speak japanese at all, i think it would be a bit difficult to communicate with japanese professors. Also i just wonder is it really possible to get grad education only in english. Of course some universities in japan introduced about english base program on their website, but i'm a bit worried if I could study in Japan even though i can't speak Japanese at all. I would be really appreciate if you leave a answer comment for my question. Anyway have a nice day!!
Well since I’m in an all-English program it’s definitely real!! 😂 As long as you are studying at a program by one of the top 20 or so schools in Japan then you will probably be fine! Professors at good schools basically need to speak English because that’s the language of academia. And some professors will be from abroad too! Of course there will be cultural hurdles and some linguistic ones perhaps, but if you find a program you like and it is specifically marketed as an English one then you’ll be fine! A lot has changed in just the last 10 years here and they’re probably legit! If you’re unsure you can just email them :) Of course living abroad not speaking the language is a bit hard, but you’ll learn quickly 😆
Hi Allison thank you so much for this informative video, nice work! Just a quick question: Pretty much all graduate programs I'm planning on applying for needs the ORINGINAL certification of graduation or diploma from my undergraduate school. That'll cost $40 for each additional copy so expensive lol. Do I really have to order additional copies of the diploma from my undergraduate school or would it be okay if I can just get the electronic pdf version and just print it? Would really appreciate it if you could help me on this one🙏
@@emanib8467 I applied for Waseda and Rikkyo. They both turned out to be pretty flexible a nd I just sent the electronic version. Just email their admission office and ask.But after you are admitted you’ll have to submit that “original” version tho. Most schools will require an original version, both the diploma and transcript. Hope everything will go well😁
Hi may I ask for recommendation requirement, do you need 3 people for the recommendation and all of them need to be professor in undergraduate? If you apply to many university with different major, do you need to ask the professor to write recommendation form again? Thanks!
I want to go to an japanese university for becoming doctor, do you know if the dorm are in the price for one year or more in the university ? Because the price for 6 year is already really high so i hope the dorm is included in the price 😅
For my university it’s not included, but you can get a dorm for 10,000 yen a month if you can show financial struggle! Even some normal dorms are only a little more expensive. It’s very cheap for Japan and if you get a part time job you’ll have no problem covering it 🙏
Me too i wanna become a doctor in Japan. Is it called MBBS there in Japan and if so how can you study it? Is it an undergrad course? because i am an undergrad. Could you please tell me? . I'm Indian btw *ignore my profile pic its a troll
hey, its about undergraduate admission so its a question for anyone reading the comments who might know - if i want to do comp sci i know i can apply for master but can i study comp sci there as an undergraduate?
You can just apply like the usual method I talk about in this video! It’s not as difficult as I expected! :) Maybe easier since you’re already here...may make a video about this though because there are hidden expenses I didn’t realize before!!
hey! i have a question, is going to university in japan as freshmen year at 23 is it older or weird? would i have chance to make some friends or getting integrated knowing that japanese people would be like 18 or 17 at the same year as me
Please don't fear about the age..go after your dreams.im 33 years old,I'm in my final year of financial engineering and going to apply for master program in Japan..I have a lot of friends in my undergraduate program also. You just want to be friendly without thinking about the age of others around you.Just go after your dreams in any age and achieve it without regreting..🤗
Hi can I ask which university you’re going to? And what program you’re doing and how the process was? I am 24 years old currently looking for a university in Japan to apply to for an undergraduate program.
