I Got My Most Wanted Arcade Machine! Raiden II from 1993

Grab your purple toothpaste lasers! Raiden 2 has been at the top of my most wanted list for as long as I can remember. Now this one is mine, acting as a vertical shmup JAMMA setup. The cabinet is a Dynamo HS-5, a classic in its own right, which housed tons of arcade games in the 80s and 90s. Only some of the hardware repair work is complete but we do at least install a Raiden II PCB, matching marquee, and upgrade to all-new controls in this video. More to come in the future as I gather components and tweak things, for sure!

I was an arcade technician for about 7 years at a local theme park and watching this video brought back so many memories of opening machines like this up and replacing the switches/buttons and cleaning it out. It was also fun setting up arcade cabinets for free play for free play events. Speaking of which, we have an arcade convention in my city coming up at the end of the month!

I was as well. I would go home and still hear the obnoxious repeat sounds on redemption games for hours. Jungle Jive was the worst. After some hours at Casinos the same thing would happen.

Compared to more modern cabs it's not that heavy. They need to be heavy though to take the abuse of an arcade, to make sure they don't topple over when kids are hanging off the joysticks for example! I've been moving cabs like this for years and am kind of used to it, Clint's little Missile Command would be no problem. Most modern cabs are much larger and heavier! For example, i'm possibly picking up an Afterburner Climax DX cab (the one that moves about) along with some others at the end of the summer, the weight of that is apparently 441kg, or 972lbs! Thats the sort of thing you can only move with a pallet truck or forklift!

The CRT picture makes me happy, so whatever. BTW, they are almost 30 years old, yet judging by the picture quality and brightness and contrast they look like new. The geometry is a bit awful, but it was always awful on CRT's, so everything as it should be. Lol.

Dude, be careful with weight limitations on the second floor of your house. I doubt having 3 or 4 machines in one room on the second floor is going to be good. I've had a few pianos over the years and we always had to check the stability of the house and the specific spot to make sure it wouldn't cause the house to sag over time, which did happen with one old house I lived in and we ended up having to install some jacks in the basement until things could get shored up. I've always lived in old wooden houses, so I'm sure experiences will vary. Awesome score though! I've also always wanted a Raiden cabinet. Congrats, lucky!

It’s great preserving and having an authentic piece of nostalgia from the glory days of video games like this. I have an original Asteroids Deluxe stand up complete with the internal glowing black light, internal diorama, 2way mirror, and amazing Atari side art and volcano start buttons. Absolutely love it. It’s a conversation piece and high quality work of functional art, that’s also still very fun and challenging to play. There are some other beautiful original arcade cabinets out there also that will be quite valuable as working period art pieces… Space Invaders Deluxe, Berzerk, Centipede, Tron, Gravitar, Tempest, Crystal Castles, Gyruss, etc.

A few things Yes, your cabinet is a generic HS-5 that was sold as a kit. The empty kit cabs were the only ones with the HS-5 label at the front left just above the coin door. OEM cabinets did not have this. Also most OEM use cabinets like Street Fighter II did not have the plywood shelf just below the monitor. They only had the pull out drawer. Lastly, i do believe you are missing two control panel latches. All Dynamo cabs come with at least two control panel latches. Yours looks to be the fighter variation that used 3 latches. You can verify this by looking for two additional holes on the left and right of the plywood area holding the current latch you have. Finally, there is a Dynamo ID thread on KLOV. It would be nice to verify your model number against the current list.

One of the greatest arcade games ever! It's the perfect sweet spot between the slow, simple vertical shooters of the 80s and the largely tedious bullet hell shooters that became the only type of vertical shmup made after the 2000s. My local arcade (Pocket Change, at the long since demolished Oak Ridge Mall) had it in a Dynamo HS5 as well, and it was insanely popular; the only other machines I remember consistently having to wait in line to play were SF2 Turbo, MK3, and Killer Instinct. Haven't finished the video yet, but It is great you found your grail arcade cabinet! I found mine about 5 years ago the "Big Red" 4-Slot v.2 NeoGeo cab. It's like having an old classic car. Things may break down on it, but love is what brings us to keep it operational. Enjoy your find!

As a huge fan of Raiden who played an original Raiden arcade machine back in the day, this was a fascinating watch. Super jealous of the cabinet with the Fabtek branding and everything. While I never saw a Raiden 2 machine in person, the original Raiden machine I played had the same kind of setup with that same Fabtek overlay on the sticks, so this one definitely captures that same essence from back then which is highly nostalgic. If I could own any arcade cabinet (which isn't possible due to space) it would be the original Raiden without a doubt. I also wanted to say that your video on arcade PCBs was what got a troglodyte like me into arcade setups. I basically copied your exact configuration from that video right down to the PSU, and now I have Raiden 1, 2, and DX boards running off it. Thanks so much for that extremely helpful video!

Truly an awesome score you have there Clint. The Raiden series are some of my favourite vertical shooters as well. Played a heap of both 1 and 2 back in the 90s in a local arcade.Viper Phase 1 I only found out about a few years ago when setting up an old pc for an emulator box but I love that as well. My altime fave though would have to be Xevious followed very closely by Galaga. Also love Gyrus for it's clever circular style of shooter and awesome sound track.

Oh yes, more arcade content please! Also excellent choice, Raiden 2 is amazing. Jealous of that collection!

Seeing you happy makes me happy, Clint. For me, it would easily be Dig Dug. It was the game that I plopped the most quarters in over my teen years in the 1980s. Have fun with that cabinet, you've definitely earned it. We love seeing you and your content.

Raiden II is amazing game. Those Dynamo cabinets are iconic. Always great to see more people restoring games instead of mindlessly gutting them. Great videos as always!

I was born a little late to experience arcade gaming in all its glory, but man do these cabinets look incredible. When I was a kid the diner we used to go to every now and then had three arcade games there that we used to play. Typically it was Crazy Taxi, Hydro Thunder, and then I think the last one was usually a Pac Man/Galaga combo unit but it was often out of order. That was basically my entire childhood experience with arcade games. But listening to you talk about these games, really makes me want to try some new ones out myself some day!

This is great man I’m glad that you were able to get a hold of one & seems to be just as important to you as it would be for me to have a Super Street Fighter 2 cabinet 💫🏆

Good for you! i felt the same way when I got a SF2 Hyper Fighting cab - while it's a modern rebuild, having a legit board working in one of these wood altars is nothing like an emulator. It's so much better.

I've been watching lots of your old videos learning about all the PC games I've ignored over the years as a console peasant but Raiden is a banger
