Oh McCarthy! I too read The Road in high school; lots of my friends recommend Blood Meridian. It's been one of those 'some day' books for far too long.
Not to give any spoilers, but The Thorn Birds caused a huge uproar when it was published, it was very controversial, and so was the film because of the subject matter. Both my parents had read and watched it in their youth (in German), and my dad isn’t a reader at all; and both had the same reaction as your librarian when they heard me mention it.
Hi Carolyn, The Thorn birds is one of my all time favorite books ! It was a mini series in the early 80's, I remember watching it the week before I got married. It was such a great family saga that takes place in Australia, and a great love story ! I just read The Luminaries,I enjoyed that book too,it is a large body of work, it was also made into a movie with some changes from the book but still enjoyable. Bridges of Madison County great story and movie. Most of the books that I love have been made into movies.I just read Ahab's Wife...a large book about the wife of Captain Ahab from Moby Dick , It was written from his wife's point of view, and I really enjoyed it,I think you would like it. Glad your sisters wedding went well and you had so much fun. Enjoy the rest of the Summer ! Happiness, Cindy
The Four Winds was my first introduction to Kristin Hannah. I listened to the audiobook which was amazing. It’s a truly fabulous book and it’s one of the last books my mom and I both read before she passed away this summer. Really glad we got to discuss it together.
The Television mini series of The Thorn Birds was wonderful, I'm a fan of Richard Chamberlain's, so I really loved it. The author Colleen did not love it! She often refused to be interviewed about it in Australia. Goes to show that often the production of a book is not admired by the author, although her reading fans mostly enjoyed it. The Book is also a wonderful saga, almost an epic, I think as it's hefty. I hope you'll enjoy it Carolyn.
My grandma used to be obsessed with The Thorn Birds series and I remember watching it with her at some point, and I really, really want to read it one day! :p
All I can say is OMG to the thorn birds. It is a four part miniseries that was aired in the 1980s and it is one of my favorite of all time romance movies nothing like you have ever experienced before. I love it so much that I have the DVD and watch it at least once a year. So glad that you enjoyed Bridges of Madison County that was another great romance. Don’t put the thorn birds aside for too long you can read it in the summer and you can read it in the winter. It’s just a great read enjoy and thank you for your videos
The TV adaptation of The Thorn Birds was very popular. The leading male, Richard Chamberlain(an early sixties heart-throb from the TV series Dr Kildare) became a staple of television dramas. If you ever get to see and like him in The Thorn Birds, check out his performances in Shogun, and one of my favourites Centennial!Love your tattoo by the way! ✨
I remember watching The Thorn Birds and loved it. Especially Richard Chamberlain! Are you talking about the series Centennial? Oh my! I've watched that movie soooo any times. And Richard Chamberlains character McKeag was one of my favorites.
If you want to read more Lois Lowry I recommend Number the Stars. It’s a book about the Holocaust that was required reading for me in fourth grade. It was incredible (and incredibly short)!
Love this video and your amazing channel please stay safe and enjoy your reading 📖 love your family friend John from Australia prayers and thoughts for you and your family and congrats to your sister and brother in law on their amazing wedding 👰 xxx
I went to the home in Iowa where they filmed The Bridges of Madison County…way back in the late 90’s …you could actually get in the bathtub…plus we visited the Bridges as well. . Our son lived in DesMoines Iowa at the time. There is a really funny story about how Eastwood searched for that house. It’s still one of my fondest memories…the book and movie are both great.
My friends and I all read The Thorn Birds one summer back in high school and loved it. I would be curious to see how it holds up to the test of time. And read (listened to) The Four Winds this past year. It was excellent as well. It is reminiscent of Grapes of Wrath or East of Eden as far as themes. Really great read. You can’t go wrong with this stack! Enjoy!
My library has a book shop also. I just started volunteering there as well. Would encourage your viewers to do so if possible. Prices are very very reasonable too!
Nice haul. Just bout done with the Count - really enjoyed it - and started 100 Years this morning - a reread. Glad the wedding went well - summer here so far has been superb. Take care and thx.
The Road is one of my favorite movies, so thought-provoking. So when our book club was reading Blood Meridian I tried, I really did, but when the part came to a Tucson locale I didn't want the evil and gore expressed in the book associated with one of my favorite places, so I gave it up. No way I can ever recommend it. As for the Thorn Birds, it was all the rage back in the 70's or 80's, totally loved it! Not a big fan of the mini-series tho, just couldn't picture Richard Chamberlain in the role of the priest.
Amazing haul, Carolyn! I love the books you chose and what a beautiful editions! The Road is great! I read The Casket of Time, by Andri Snaer Magnason, a writer from Iceland, and i loved it! It's a middle grade distopia and i highly recommend. 💖
My local library has a sale table which I love to peruse! You mentioned The Luminaries was no longer available - I tried reading it many years ago and it's one of the few books I have never finished and don't want to attempt to re-read. But I would be very interested to hear your thoughts if you find a copy. I'm new to your channel and am enjoying your videos!
The Thorn Birds is one of my all tim favorite books. The movie w Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward I think. Was great as well or I tmay have been a series..READ It! Don’t put it off lol
I would love to hear your thoughts on Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. Please let me know if you did a vlog on this book. I just saw the new movie, and I loved it. On a different note, do you read much nonfiction? I loved Educated by Tara Westover and All the Young Men by Ruth Coker Burks. I think you will enjoy these books. I appreciate your great channel.
Hi! Thank you so much for inspiring me to reed clasics! Can you make a vlog on Vanity Fair? I know you are not shure of this but as a War & Peace admirer I think you will love it!
Dear Carolyn, Blood Meridian is a masterpiece, but difficult to "take." There is a young man on RU-vid by the name of Benjamin McEvoy who does videos on this book that are way more than worthwhile. He hosts the Hardcore Literature bookclub. The book and Benjamin are both highly recommended. Congrats to you for your questing spirit!
Blood Meridian has always intimidated me with how dark it supposedly is. The Road is probably the most depressing movie I've ever seen, but maybe McCarthy is worth a shot!
I read most of Cormac McCarthy's books, I didn't enjoy his writing style at all,I found his sentences went on and on. The books that I read were all depressing. I did like the movie "No Country for Old Men", didn't read that book though.
Dont recall you ever talking about it .. but you need to read some Milan Kundera !! (Unbearable lightness of being comes to mind) maybe you already know about it :)
Hello from British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦👋👍♥️🌲🌲🧘♀️🌲🌲🐸🌱🌿☕ I had an ARC my girlfriends husband recieved, he said he wished he had written it 😉 I am almost done Jane Austen July
I am reading it for the first time and I am not liking the comparison between dora and davy. Ruins the impact of the book for me. Davy was an unlikeable character for me to be honest and in one scene he even locked dora in a dark room and she was crying for hours but instead of punishing davy what Anne and Marilla did? They laughed and took it as his mischievous behaviour. Anne was a neglected child herself, so of all people, she should be the one who empathize with this but no, each and every time Anne and Marilla did comparison and said unlikeable words when it came to Dora. And in one scene Rachel call Dora monotonous and comfortable to be around but not an interesting person. What were marilla and her brother then ? Have she ever told them that ? And for God's sake they all were doing this thing to a CHILD. I feel so ashamed of these characters. Stupid! Infuriating! Dora needed them too as a child who lost someone in her life but they did side lined her. Marilla wanted a good, quiet girl to care in the past but when she had one she simply chose to neglect her.
