The show didn't quite go into as much detail about this that the book did@@KoiYakultGreenTea but this is exactly what Lady Gin is proposing to Toranaga -the creation and protection of the geisha class of escorts and entertainers. Lady Gin's handling of Toranaga was one of my absolute favorite moments of the show. Her virtually dismissing Toranaga and ending the interview while he was reeling from her insight was just pure chef's kiss.

Did you know the first geishas were men and the first kabuki troupe was women? Geishas were/are entertainers separate from prostitutes, oirans, and courtesans. The karyukai had very defined roles but sometimes the edges blur.

Mariko's backstory is based on real Japanese history. The father of Akechi Tama killed a Daimyo to save the realm. Much like a Kingsguard slaying a King who was about to burn the whole city..... But, much like with the gardener, it was something that had to be done for the greater good, even though the price was death.

You've put an extra leader in bewteen Ruri/Ochiba's father and the dead Taiko, he was killed because he hated religion and because he was cruel, but was also seen as the first unifer of Japan (irl Oda Nobumaga). It was just Ochiba's father and then the Taiko whom she had a son with (even though he was seemingly sterile).

Interesting the way he says “The Japans” is kinda fun, of course Japan is a European word for the country of Nippon or Nihon, which the Portuguese learned from the Malay people who pronounced it Jepang or Jepun, but from John’s perspective it’s an archipelago of multiple loosely aligned nations so the Japans probably makes more sense than a singular Japan

Kuroda the tyrant that Mariko’s father killed is a stand in for the historical figure Nobunaga Oda, a lord who conquered most of Japan and was a tyrant. He was such a tyrant he was colloquially known as the Demon King. Mariko’s father is a stand in for the historical figure Mitsuhide Akechi a famed and skilled warrior who served Nobunaga but betrayed and killed him in order to save Japan. Think Jamie Lannister killing the mad king except where Jamie got off scott free minus the title of Kingslayer and gossip Mariko’s father lost everything because even though he killed and evil tyrant it was still his lord he was bound to serve and protect. The reason Mariko is the only survivor of the clan is because she was married off to Buntaro’s family so she was no longer part of the clan. It’s why Mariko wishes for death and Buntaro constantly belittles her family because of this “scandal”.

More on the women using a naginata thing. Mariko already showed her skills in combat in the episode where they were ambushed on the way to the docks. That was a naginata she was using quite effectively to defend her Daimyo.

I feel like there's gonna be some interesting revelations in the last few episodes. Lady Ochiba may very well be right about Toranaga manipulating Mariko's father into taking her father's life. The more I watch this, the more I'm convinced that Toranaga has been playing a very long-term gambit to become Shogun. The fact that he keeps saying he's never desired it only convinces me of it more. I think he manipulates absolutely everyone, including Mariko when he says that her father had these plans for her to continue his fight. Toranaga is the one who wants to use her for the fight, her father just wanted her far away from what was going on.

The fact that John keeps saying “let me use my boats, they’re week in the water”, combined with Japan eventually becoming one of the deadliest Navy forces in history…I think they’re gonna let john use his boat, and than incorporate more advanced boating warfare moving forward…I of course am not brushed up on my history in this era, so I could be wrong.

Japan didn’t really focus on building a navy till after the Americans forced them to reopen the country to foreign trade in the 1850s, at the time they had nothing which could face the American frigates, within 50 years they build a formidable modern navy which the Russians will find out…

Oh, great. In before people complain about the series actually showing samurai women were taught to fight and start calling it "woke". The naginata was actually mainly used by women, from what I have read. Most men who regularly used naginata would be Sohei/Buntei/Ikko-Ikki. {Warrior monks.} Who were not "officially" samurai, and could not legally wear a daisho. Samurai women were said to be deadly fast and accurate with a naginata. Even against samurai fighting with a tachi or katana from horseback, because of the extra reach.
@catiasantos9470
@catiasantos9470 6 месяцев назад
ok, so naginata weren't mainly used by women, noble women mainly used naginata, that's not the same thing. And although it's atached to buddist monks the naginata was used by monks and samurai alike because of the niche they occupied, crowd-crontrol. That required much more training than a yari, the "normal" spear wich could be given to peasants with low amounts of training and stacked in formation for great effect. noble women were normaly trained in weapons to defend their homes from bandits while the men were away on wars, which was why the naginata, along with the bow, was the weapon of choice, it was to fight poorly armored enemies who's main advantage was numbers. And yes, most of them were quite skilled at it, being trained from a young age.
@scotthewitt258
@scotthewitt258 6 месяцев назад
@@catiasantos9470 Well, okay. Sorry I did not realize anyone would need to be specifically told there was a caste system in Japan. Also, I am sure I NEVER said "Samurai never used naginata". RU-vid comments is worse than "Star Wars" fans. And that is saying a funnelcaking lot......
@catiasantos9470
@catiasantos9470 6 месяцев назад
the noble women part is important because it was not something available to peasant women i.e. the majority of women, it speaks to the availability of the training ad it's a rebutal to the "actually mainly used by women..." in your comment. and although you never said samurai never used them you did say "Most men who regularly used naginata would be Sohei/Buntei/Ikko-Ikki. {Warrior monks.} Who were not "officially" samurai..."wich is just simply not true, since the naginata was one of the 19 weapons of war of the samurai and was widely used by them. I just pointed out the details you got wrong and you went accusing me of being worse than a star wars fan, wich is quite the insult ;) @@scotthewitt258
@scotthewitt258
@scotthewitt258 6 месяцев назад
@@catiasantos9470 Okay. If I say "Diamond necklaces in medieval times were mainly worn by women", I would not expect anyone to assume I was including peasant women feeding the pigs. The show itself has CLEARLY established there are layers to the Japanese society at the time. I appreciate you clarifying things. I have said in other reactions a lot of my studies of the history of Japan included books by the one "expert" who has now been called into suspicion by other experts in the field. I apologize for any and all mistakes. And for my initial snarky reply to your reply.

It wasn't her family, because she was still just a child when she witnessed it. You clearly see her much older later on being married off by her father. Once she is married off, that's when her father assassinated the lord and subsequently has to execute his own family, then off himself. Those people who were being killed were monks. Mariko's father doesn't approve of it and Toranaga tells him to wait. We were witnessing the inciting incident which prompted him to murder his lord (Ochiba's father)
