I totally agree about the user interface. I hate it when everything is buried in menus, on a touch screen. Gimme a freaking button! I can hit the button while driving, without taking my eyes off the road for more than a split second. The same can't be said for a touch screen.
That bit at the end is oh so true. We're basically still cavemen, with a bunch of fancy new toys. Our technological progress is outpacing our evolutionary progress by orders of magnitude. We've reached a point where our own technology has become like magic to us, because we can't wrap our monkey brains around it.
It made me smile to hear you ranting about apps, passwords and constantly giving out personal information. I feel exactly the same but thought it was because I'm 57 years old, but it turns out its a cross-generational thing 😀
I'm in my 20s, a cybersecurity professional, and I also agree. It's overcomplicating a non issue and only giving companies the opportunity for a data breach.
I am a retired engineer. I've been arguing your points on user interface FOREVER! First principles of human/machine interaction should not be violated! Most drivers are used to a stoplight that has RED as stop, GREEN as go. Change that, and you kill a lot of people. Change the paradigm of daily car use and you get a lot of very frustrated people! The screen should at least mimic a row of commonly used buttons available on practically every car. Great comments on tribalism by the way.
Go rent a rental car from a maker you are not familiar with, I did last year and that Puegot has so many controls so badly positioned it took me 10 minutes to unfold the wing mirrors and the navigation controls were so bad I used my iPhone for 4 days before I was able to switch to car nav. Why the narrator of the show could not see the hazard button which is above the rear view mirror, same place it is in many cars I have no idea. This kind of blindness is common on people with obvious anger management issues though.
@@jjamespacbell "Go rent a rental car from a maker you are not familiar with" I had this 15 years ago (I think it was a VW Passat). I had a 500 mile business trip and the car was dropped off in the company car park with the keys left at reception. A hire car so no user manual. The "handbrake" is a pushbutton and was simply crap. It would either roll back down a slope or stay on and stall the motor when I pulled away. No functional benefit to the user, simply change for it's own sake.
I hope you were saying this from actual experience driving a Tesla. Most people feel it’s going to be a horrible experience that causes a lot of retraining but actually pretty much everybody that ends up driving a Tesla are very happy with the screen big advantage is that your car will always stay up-to-date have all the featuresthat the new Tesla have because of the software based interface.
@@bspencersf Not convinced that's true - i own one, several of my friends do (tech company, not a huge surprise) and most of us bitch about the terrible UI, even several years into ownership. Sure, I've learned where all the options are, but it's still a terrible flow to have to go into the car menu, then the lights menu, then press two buttons when you drive into a fog bank and need to be paying attention but there is no foglight button you can hit by feel. I realise they "fixed" this on the newer models by just deleting the fog lights. The passenger wants into the glove box they reach over to the drivers side, take away the nav system by opening the menu, then press another button. This is a worse flow. Yes, you can learn it. It's still bad. That's before you reach the things that only work on automatic setting but the automatic stuff doesn't really work reliably, like lights and wipers. Sure, they work 90+% of the time, but that's still a lot worse than normal wipers and lights that work 100% of the time.
@@bspencersf I have owned my Model Y for 3 years and loved it from day 1 hour 1. I do think Tesla could add a 2 minute video tutorial right on the screen to show newbies how to use the system, this would be great for rental agencies and maybe impatient hot heads like this RU-vidr
Love the rants lol. Did not expect the life lesson at the end. You are one of a kind, having a gf from Bosnia and knowing all the stories i can definitely relate and feel the deeper meaning. Love you, stay strong!
8:59 How to open the glovebox if the table is broken? "Oh, sorry mr. Policeman, I can't show you my documents, because the huge tablet is broken and this is the only way to open the glovebox, where my docs are".
Mate the last beep after the rant just got me laughing haha, I love how it went from a Tesla review video to humanity review haha. You have an amazing energy dude! I learned a lot of stuff from your vids and explanations of combustion engine things, they are very educating and informative!
First time in my life I couldn't find the hazards and I drove some very weird cars. It's a tiny non-glowing faint red triangle outside the field of vision here...even if you look at the ambient lighting you might not spot it if you're tall.
FYI: 1) Hazard button is top of rear view mirror 2) 3d animation is for Autopilot ADAS system. 3) You can make oversteer in park track mode in model 3 performance model 4) beeping is may be caused by your camer (low battery or battery overheating warning)
A good vehicle interior design, as said is designed for human interaction. You should not have to take your eyes off the road to turn ac on/off, radio, heated seats etc... My opinion the user interface of the tesla is one of the worst interfaces I have ever seen.
I can do all that without taking my hands off the wheel and eyes off the road driving my Tesla. This guy has an awesome channel but consider this entertainment rather than a review
I suppose for an iPad with such a massive battery that it needs wheels to make it portable, the performance as a mode of transport isn’t too shabby really.
I’m 33 years old, I’m a car mechanic and I really try to get in touch with the new age and stay positive about it. And every time I do, I’m so disappointed that I return to my 1996 Audi A6 and feel just fine, because it does what it’s meant to do. Always, reliable, no matter whether I go 5, 50 or 5000 Miles. Glove box opens only by touch menu?! This is a good reason to fill fuel in a Tesla, but not for driving but to burn the damn thing up… Is it so hard to make these essential functions work without a ridiculous attempt for reinventing the wheel? Arrrghhh…
Thank you for making this video. As a motorcyclist I now know to emergency brake everytime I see a Tesla as the driver is guaranteed to be fiddling with their tablet control interface and not observing their surroundings!!!
This is the most ignorant thing I've seen on the internet all week. As an automobile driver, I now know to expect to be cut off as you're weaving in and out of traffic like a drunk baboon.
@@spampeg Thank you for your comment. I am not of the hirsute, alcohol consuming and traffic weaving variety of motorcyclist, but I recognise they exist and are annoying. However, I fail to see the logic of your equivalency. They may cause scratches, broken mirrors and inconvenience. A distracted driver contravening the path of a law abiding motorcyclist can cause serious injury and death. Stay safe and remember: mirror, signal, manoeuvre.
I have to admit that I have the same feelings as you in this video. Just drove an EV for the first time and I plan to get one now for my commute to work. With that said I still do want my weekend car to be an old, pre 95, gas car that does not try in anyway to stop you from doing something that is completely stupid. Great video and I great channel. Keep going.
man i'm so glad you went on a mountain run in the tesla. 99% of tesla videos just show drag racing. a lot of people don't fully understand how good the handling is with all the weight being so low in the car. it handles WAY better than you'd expect from essentially a car competing with a honda civic or corolla
Yeah with about 1/2 the vehicles weight being soooo low it must be surprisingly nimble. One would expect it to handle like a truck if you simply looked at weight.
It's $15,000 more expensive than a Honda Civic? Put it this way, I was just in the market for a car, and the civic was an option, the model 3 was not, even if I had wanted it.
@@aggonzalezdc with 15000 worth of gas, you drive a long way. That's why EV are not for everyone and can't replace like for like combustion engine cars.
@@jmbpinto73 yep. If I had the money I'd LOVE to have a little EV to get groceries with. But I don't have the luxury of owning an EV. Which is why the legislation in places like CA where they want no more ICE cars after 2030? So basically, only rich people can buy cars in California now? I mean, I even OWN A HOME, I'm way better off than a lot of Americans, and even I can't charge an EV at home! if I could afford one at all. It's crazy to me. EVs are good, do not get me wrong (even if I think Tesla is a bit shite, but that's not a problem with EVs), but you can't force them on everyone!
Never words were more true. I didn't know many of the details you just showed us, but now I'm even more convinced that these are frustrating cars for frustrated people
I already have several different apps on my phone for different parking areas of the city, and that really pisses me off. Having several MORE apps for different charging stations would just add to it. Plus its another thing if you leave your phone at home. Theres no drive-off policy for EV charging.
In a world where there’s a (sometimes “necessary”) app for everything; being able to have as little apps and intrusions as possible is an under rated yet so simplistic, thing to have. Every time I need a new app or account for something I want to groan aloud lol
There’s is if you use Tesla and their chargers. You just go to a closest supercharger, plug in, wait 25 minutes and drive away. You DO NOT need a phone with you.
the thing that gets me is there's no inherent reason why charging an EV needs to be any more complicated than filling up a gasoline car. you're paying for units of energy in one form or another. it COULD literally be as easy as "insert card" like it is on a gas pump. it's just that tech bros decided they need our data.
Well it isn't. Use supercharger on trips, they're everywhere and in Europe also the cheapest. If you navigate to a destination the car will automatically guide you to the needed chargers. Procedure, back into the spot, take charging connector to the charge port, push button on connector and insert in the now open charge port. Car tells you when you have enough either to destination or next supercharger. Payment is automatic.
@@Torgrim5958 while, yes, tesla did streamline the process there are other EV manufacturers aside from tesla and they buy and large attempt to mimic that with none of the actual reliability. but i wasn't inherently talking about tesla here. the whole experience on non-tesla vehicles (and even tesla sometimes) can be and often is frustrating and there is no practical reason why most of these chargers don't just... let you pay with a debit card. if there was a gas station that required a phone app to pump my gas i probably just wouldn't go there. even if 50% of the time it automagically recognised my car.
I've got a Model X and my wife has a Y with the same controls as the 3. Her car drives me mad. I hope it's a passing phase with Tesla. One thing; you smiled as you first drove away. Don't deny it, you smiled 😊
I don't know what is more frightening: to see you ranting like an old man about young generation or the fact that I actually feel the same for the most part.
This reminded me of trying to use an Apple phone or tablet for the first time. They have to do it different to *everyone* else and in consequence it simply isn't intuitive. Those worshipping at the altar of Apple or Tesla will not accept any criticism no matter how constructive it's intention. They can keep their products, I will go elsewhere. Their loss, not mine.
The problem around the interface is simple, it isn't build for people who drive, its build for people who don't/dont want to drive, the safety systems are built around this notion too, the beeping, lane assist, cruise control even, all built around giving the driver as little to do as possible, because its built for people who don't want anything to do with driving. Basically, its not a car guy car, nor is like 70% of the cars coming out today, maybe more, cars are increasingly moving towards a driver-do-nothing situation, and has been for a very long time.
I totally share your points with the touchscreen and the payment for charging. Hyundai imo did do a good job with the Ioniq 5 (they still should‘ve used buttons for AC, but at least its a dedicated panel, not a submenu). Paying for Electricity is stupidly complicated, especially if you don't want to get ripped off. Fun fact: Within the EU, all new chargers must have card terminals and existing ones need to be updated by 2028 (i think), which will be so much better.
Had same experience, was a BMW not a Tesla, so it wasn't this bad. But the problem is not the EV part.. the EV motor is great. But they turned a car inoto an appliance and I don't wanrt an appliance, I want a car.
2:20 FYI, you can move turn signal camera view from the bottom to the top for slightly better placement. But without it being on a screen in front where the tradition instrument cluster goes I think using the mirrors is still far more effective and safer. Also, the virtual display of the traffic around you is not intended to supplement your awareness while driving, rather it is there to show the car itself sees and is aware of everything around it. It is supposed to help inspire confidence in the use of Tesla's supervised full self driving (FSD) software so more people use it and help train it when they intervene for the eventual end goal for legal unsupervised self driving. Though FSD is not available in Europe at this time, the ADAS features are still there and these also rely on the car's perception. All Teslas since mid 2017 shipped with hardware to run FSD and even the cars without the FSD software process real world video data in "shadow mode" to look for edge cases which are then uploaded anonymized for FSD training. In the US you have the option to opt out but in Europe you might have to opt in or they might not be collecting there right now. Most Tesla owners don't mind since eventually having a self driving car that can assume legal liability would be awesome. You could then use it to drive you home after you drank alcohol at bar or party, or temporarily while you look things up on your phone when running errands, or while you work on your laptop during a commute, or while you sleep on super long distance trips.
0:50 this is why I like to have "creep" mode, but the problem is switching between the two, when you park, it's much easier with creep, and when you drive it's much better without it. Niro EV seems kinda working with "hold steering wheel paddle to stop completely", but I believe there is better solution that's not yet thought of.
This video was a poem. It is very annoying and dangerous having to operate basic car functions from a touch screen or a phone app. And I truly believe this happens for reducing the cost. For me the more physical buttons a car has the friendlier it is for the user.
Did not thought Teslas are this good(Except for the screen and NO buttons)! But, this is why I still drive a 2011 Cruze Diesel(2.0)! Even though people say it's a crap, money pit, not fast and not fun, I can still hear the turbo, feel the turbo lag and the slow shifts; At least I feel like I'm driving a turbocharged tractor rather than driving a silent rolling metal device! (Because the overly silenced and economy hunting(CVT) modern cars also bother me! Most of them have no good character that the driver can feel and enjoy!) Thanks for your review as a first EV driver D4A!
I've had a few motorcycles in my life and am currently riding a Z900. This widow maker can get 0 to 100 in under 3.5 seconds. But recently, I've done a test drive in a Model Y, and I gotta buy one. The instant torque is just addictive as the bike. 🙂 Btw, you can use many many voice commands instead of the menu.
I would buy an electric car, if! If it has traditional buttons, decent range, easy to charge and is similar in price and resell value to a regular car. Electricity in inself is no problem for me. But this trend that Tesla started of "tabletizing" cars, l find repulsive
Most of the controls can be done without the screen. This video isn't a very good representation because he doesn't know how to configure anything. It takes time to get accustom to it and set it up the way you want it. They are similar price. If you actually own the car, you can use the Tesla super chargers, which is a lot cheaper and seamless. But where it really shines is when you can charge from home.
Can I get a amen in here haha You are completely right. And to be honest im glad I drive a camaro 85 with soul and a daily Seat Exeo.I dont have money for new cars but even then i would buy a older one with a big engine because i want my car to have a personality.
If you can afford only one car for the family the model 3/Y is a clever choice. Can do the boring part perfectly and you can have fun as well. And with the performance version you have also the control on many parameters like suspension, traction control etc…
From one grease monkey to another; this is by far the most fun Tesla review I have ever seen. Please do a part 2 when you get more acquainted with the dreaded tablet.
Sorry if i sound mad but It's called GETTING USED TO SOMETHING 4:48 You can't expect to be fluid with something you had experience for 15 min. Same with manual transmission people had trouble when first learning it but now its just natural. They designed the controls very well the climate controls on screen are big and easy to read. 7:40 same stuff here it's your fault you are used to it. 9:13 THE BUTTON FOR BOX STAYES FIXED ALWAYS ON SCREEN, AND IT'S NOT COST CUTTING IT'S SO IT CAN BE LOCKED IN VALET MODE. 9:49 Cause lights are automatic anyway.
There is a reason I daily drive an E34 525 with a M54B30 swap instead of a modern, sensible car. It allows me to decompress on my daily commute instead or being in another appliance.
To be fair, I agree largely with you. Tesla's choice to be mostly software driven to control the vehicle has removed me from buying a Tesla. There are other EVs out there, each brand with their own choices and preferences. I bought an Hyundai Ioniq and have been very happy with it. New generation of vehicles, there will be diversity while people will find what they like. Glad you enjoyed this one, try another! :)
Using the tablet will become much more intuitive while using it more than a day… great video, thank you very much! Just one thing: please think about the possibility of children running over a street - it can always happen around buildings and you don`t want to have such an accident. Please do not missunderstand - I like spirited driving as well but as a father I am a bit nervous seeing people driving those speeds around houses)… Again: nice video, nice analysis and I mostly agree as someone driving a Tesla daily and a Boxster as well as a A110 on weekends ;-) keep making videos
I see that unfortunately your philosophical thougths about hater grouping left closed ear by the ones you were talking about. EV haters have only heard the negative parts (those were not really against EV, but against the modern car UI-s generally). No. The have just heard that they have to continue hating EV-s, especially Tesla. Altought you did not say anything even close to it. And this is sad. I hope sometime they will also learn your much more open way of thinking.
Q. "Why does it show me the van on the screen? There's a big glass here, I can see the van" "it's a gimmick" A. To give drivers confidence that the car is correctly detecting its surroundings. Some people are interested in this. Others are not. You are right though - Q. who's going to be staring at the screen the whole time instead of the road? A. When FSD is level 4 or above then you'll probably be watching videos in the screen instead of the road.
Regardless of the level, FSD gives a much different view of planned routing, and it is useful info. The non-FSD depiction is a lot less useful. But it makes sense they still put it on the screen.
Consumer EV's will become disposable as re-sale value sinks. No one buy's used batteries. The US Fed has to offer tax rebates for buying them used. Buying EV for a tax dodge spells doom.
yup my take exactly, I strive for less algorithm. 95% of new cars/trucks from now on suck. I'm digging my 2024 2.3 MT bronco, but might be my last IC manual, unless I go to old clean ups. Thanks for all the information!
wait until you experience the joy of the updated “no stalks” models…

You are probably not going to read this comment but: i recognize the location where you filmed the review!!! It's right besides my home! The world really is a small place :)
Love the channel and find it funny all the people taking the video seriously. This would be like giving an ICE car to someone who rode a horse. Yes there are similarities between an ICE car and Tesla but many differences
Electric vehicles sound like they are great for someone who commutes on a daily basis but I think everyone will need a gas powered car for other trips and such. And if you ever have to tow something heavy you definitely need an internal combustion engine for that
I believe we have reached a peak between human efficiency and practicality. People like pushing buttons and twiddling knobs that they can see. Taking your eyes off the road to find a sub menu on a screen is crazy. Unfortunately, technology and those inventing it, do not recognise this. They just go on inventing more gadgets and gizmos, trying to turn your car into a modern aircraft cockpit. Believe me, if pilots were required to be constantly looking out of the window to read signs in the sky and avoiding thousands of oncoming and crossing planes they would soon have big buttons, knobs and switches put back. The purveyors of this stuff call you a Luddite if you voice any opposition and Governments, always wanting industrial 'advancement', whether sensible or not, sing the praises and encourage this new stuff. [Dazzlingly bright LED car headlights come to mind, which at last is being looked into regards road safety]. The human being is slowly becoming a 'living app', just a process in the chain of commands connecting the touch screen and the computer driving the car.
5:54 -- probably this guy has never driven a Dacia before. You will definitely hear the engine. It won't give any power, but at least you have the sound, if you're interested in that.
