I enjoyed your review. But I think you have to understand deeply about the culture. To give ones life to a loved one is the greatest of all honor. In his death he is hoping that Toranaga will save the Nation and Country. Also you ask the closest to you to be your second in Seppuku because you need someone who will make sure you will not suffer by being hacked like child Toranaga did to his vanquished enemy. But I enjoyed your personal response. Oh by the way I am the English dub voice of Hiromatsu.
Lady, if you don't show up for the next one, I'm going have issues with the writers too. LUL When Toranaga summoned Mariko she already knew Hiromatsu was dead. Her reply to Toranaga asking if she disagreed, "I won't deepen the wound by disagreeing." expressed her thoughts, yet not in a condemning manner. The writers are just so talented. I'm so conflicted about how I feel about Buntaro. For being an in love, courageous and hurt man, he is also a petty, wife beater. Sure, we can acknowledge that in that type of male dominated, machismo culture violence in the home would be normalized, but from what I know about Japan's culture in that era, wife beating was thought of as less than noble. I think that's 'a' reason for Hiromatsu ordering Buntaro to live. Even so, I did feel for him when Mariko presented the truth without 8 walls in-between them. Then I also remember that Mariko looks down on Buntaro. She did even before they got married. She was upset not about her father marrying her off, but marrying her off to someone of Buntaro's lower station. I can't forgive Buntaro for being a petty, brute but I can appreciate that his desire for her love in the face of her despise for him could lead to fireworks. Had he been a truly 'noble' man, he would have worked harder to improve his station and win her appreciation. I wonder if the writers have condemned him or will redeem him. Not that I think their relationship can be mended. On a final note. I'm most angry for the writers withholding even one scene with Fuji.
Toranaga is such a troll putting the church right next to the courtesan guild 🤣 And please keep the reviews coming! I was devastated by the scene with Hiromatsu as well, but I think that was the point (as you said, the writers here are incredibly good at getting us emotionally invested after relatively few episodes). Toranaga may be portrayed as one of the main protagonists, but I think they've done a great job showing that all of the players in this story have dubious morality or at the very least have to make decisions that result in the deaths of others, regardless of how noble the cause is.
