theres a theory shes adopted bc when shes a newborn, theyre standing over her. mothers after birthing arent strong enough to stand like that in everyday clothes. the mom would be in a hospital gown in a hospital bed holding her. plus riley has blonde hair and blue eyes, but her parents both have brown hair and brown eyes.

I hated Joy too to be fair. I am one with Sadness. I was amazed to realize that Sadness was COMPELLED to touch Rileys old memories because it's what Riley NEEDED to heal and grow up, but she was trying not too to make mom and dad happy which it did not. Toxic positivity is always important to talk about and the movie showed that as well

I love how this movie says: sadness is often the key to sympathy and empathy, because without it we can't "feel bad" for others, or let others know that we need their help. If you force yourself to be "happy" all the time, you'll just end up miserable.
@meanyapickles
@meanyapickles Год назад
That... makes a lot of sense. Joy was a very upbeat character, but she had no empathy for Sadness or for Bingbong. She was more concerned with securing the core memories and getting herself back home than she was with the wellbeing of Sadness _or_ Bingbong... until she cried. When she cried, when she let her own sadness out, only then did she realize what sadness meant. And it was that moment where she finally allowed herself to be sad and have someone else help her that let her grow enough to mourn Bingbong, bring Sadness home, and let her turn every core memory nostalgic.

And it shows how toxic positivity can force you into depression and such. It's shows how when it gets really bad, some people experience complete emotional shut down. They feel nothing, but anxiety and they constantly snap at people. And then, when nothing is done to fix it, all emotion is completely shut off. And this is VERY realistic.
@jasonchow9379

But the problem is that most male don't express sadness publicly because of society standards. Society depict us men to be manly and doesn't let us show our emotions correctly. Now I'm not saying female don't get depressed but more men gets sad than females. I personally when I would get hurt people tell you to walk it off. No male will show their emotions if no one cares. In result they would keep their emotions inside and not express it at all or properly. Male suicides are 3 times more than females. We just need to teach kids its ok to be sad, its ok to show emotion, its ok to want to cry. We're all human and humans don't deserve to be treated that way.
@emmastone8779

@@jasonchow9379females don’t express it that much either bc it isn’t taken seriously, it’s chalked up to pms symptoms. Females are more prone to negative emotions than males. @@jasonchow9379but those "society" are created by men. The "suck it up" mentality is from toxic masculinity. The "man can't get r4ped" is made by men too. And women can't express emotions either you know, we get made fun off by EVERYTHING. If we get angry "are you on your period?", if we get sad then we're to "sensitive" if we get to excited then we're "fangirling". We get made fun off liking sports, game, kpop, fashion, art, building and literally everything. Plus men aren't allowed to cry but women are consider "too emotional" for expressing ourself. Society sucks for everyone and honestly the mentality of "men can't cry being the hardest thing when it comes to being a men" is kinda laughable because now, you can cry. And video games have always been a hobby of mine. I especially love Elder Scrolls, COD, and Dark Souls (Bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring ). My dad also is big into working out and we've had a home gym for my whole life so whenever my Dad was watching me he would move the baby swing into the gym. And I grew up loving all athletics and sports. Wait a second! Now that I'm thinking about it I wonder if my Dad purposefully programmed my personality like he does with his computers!! Oh, you're right... I always saw how Joy handing Sadness the memories was her way of getting past her fear of joyful memories turning sad, which is what got them into their mess in the first place. The "Joy is the antagonist" thing that everyone has is true... BUT that's part of growing up. When you are an infant you don't need complex emotions. When you are happy you are doing fine. When you start getting older you need to understand sadness too or you end up as a sociopath. For the same reason Binbong had to be forgotten for Riley to grow up without imaginary friends sticking around as that's kinda psychotic if it goes on for too long
@kittycatmeowmeow963
@kittycatmeowmeow963 2 года назад
I do understand that class scene though. Riley was the new kid. Joy and the rest had to stop sadness from making her cry in front of everyone so they wouldn't make fun of her and she can have friends. That's what we human beings do. We suck up our feelings so we don't cry in public. Or that scene where her parents were fighting. Joy made her stop them from doing it because Riley was scared that they were going to get a divorce.
@xmant8842
@xmant8842 2 года назад
I don't even see joy as the antagonist. Heck, if someone can consider joy the antagonist then they better consider riley's parents the main antagonists because her mom was the one who made joy think she was the most important. But I wouldn't consider anyone the main antagonist because imo there isn't one. In fact, that's one of the things I love about the movie. There isn't really an antagonist and that helps everything the characters go through feel natural

I say a lot every time I ever speak about this film so I'm going to try and keep it short this time. I have had serious depression on and off since I was a teenager. The mistake that I think a lot of people, and I blame media for this, is that people think that depression is an excess of sadness. While I think sadness is a major part of depression, I personally spotted three metaphors in this movie that captured what depression is even better. A) forgetting joy; you forget how to be happy and can't bring yourself to feel it B) when they're in the pit of forgotten memories and you see these memories of a happy child fading away in addition to the personality islands (I personally think a certain amount of depression is losing the identity that you had) C) when Riley gets that idea and her emotions can't make her feel anything so she goes on autopilot. My personal experience is that depression is being unable to feel anything. You want to feel something, but can't. I also think the concept of an idea stuck in your head that your emotions can't break out of is suicide in a nutshell. Every story I've ever heard from people who survived a suicide attempt is that they instantly regretted it. It's an idea you can't get out of your head and your brain can't break you out of it. I often use this movie as a test for me, because I inevitably cry at this movie whenever I watch it. Both in the moments I mentioned and when sadness finally turns the core memories sad. I find that the more shit I'm dealing with, the more I cry uncontrollably at this movie. It becomes a bit of catharsis and I am suddenly at piece once I've done so. Pixar Nirvana shall we call it. The worse my depression is, the more of a release this movie becomes. But I have to consciously think about it as the cure I need for the time, but it's a cure that I find to be incredibly effective

Speaking as someone who refused to wear her glasses for a solid year despite desperately needing them because I felt really self-conscious about how I look in them, trust me when I say no one looks anywhere near as bad in glasses as they think they do. It's mostly a matter of getting used to seeing yourself in them when you see your reflection, or in your case, a recording of yourself (also getting used to the sensation of having them resting on the bridge of your nose, and remembering that they're there when you go to scratch any part of your face near your eyes, that takes some getting used to also). Honest opinion, I'd say you look about the same with your glasses on. Personally, I found it a bit easier to accept wearing glasses when I thought about how I could do the anime glasses thing (ya know, where the lenses of the glasses gets completely whited out by light for dramatic effect). No one can feel uncool when doing the anime glasses thing.

just so you know, theres a reason songs get stuck in your head so easily. out of all the parts of the working memory, musical memory is usually the strongest and last to fade. this is why people with dementia can instantly get brought back to their past if a song they listened to plays (look up the ballerina who danced to swan lake, its really interesting). theres lots of people who make up little songs to help remember something, or listen to music to study, and why a lot of commercials have jingles because those get stuck in your head. the downside is when you get something stupid stuck in your head, like a commercial or a joke song, and cant get it out for hours at a time

I'll say it again... I really like the glasses. You should wear them! 🤓 It has been a long time since I have seen this film... and yes, it really is a lot more deep than people initially gave it credit for. Did you know there were originally a lot more than the five core emotions in the early drafts of the script? Besides the five we know, there was also supposed to be: Gloom, Greed, Hope, Envy, Guilt, Love, Irritation, Shame, Embarrassment... plus another 12! The majority of these were cut simply because they overlapped: Despair, Depression, and Gloom would have shared lots of the same territory with Sadness, and it might have proven difficult to suitably differentiate the characteristics of Pride, Greed and Envy. Ultimately, they were happy with the five that they ended up with.

I haven’t watched this movie since probably when it came out in 2014 of Maybe 2017 or something like that, rewatching it with you was really deeper then I remembered, and I love how much message and deepness of emotions are, in my expience, I am a very moody person, I always stumble about with being sad, emotionless and toxic positivity to get through the day.

I do very much agree on having a good cry. See, my grandpa died earlier this year, and that just *devastated* my uncle. So at the funeral after the casket was lowered we encouraged him to just, let it all out. Next day, he was feeling much better

Hey Welchy, for what it's worth I think you look great in glasses. I felt weird about needing them when I got my first prescription but honestly you get used to them pretty quick if you wear them a lot. They certainly made taking down notes at school a lot easier! Wishing you the confidence to wear them with pride! :)

Noooooooooooooooo I love Joy. She's just trying her best to keep Riley happy. She definitely grows and gets better. Being someone who suffers from Depression, I relate to both Joy and Sadness. Edit: also, something can be said about the fact that the first thing Riley's parents tell her is that she's a little bundle of joy. There's definitely something to be said about parental expectations and the reinforced idea throughout this movie that Riley is the happy girl and keeps her family happy. That's a lot of pressure to place on a child. And why joy feels the need to control everything. And why we see everything that happens and at the end joy (and Riley's parents) learn that sadness is good and addressing that Riley has other emotions is also good. Edit 2: 10:30 that my dear Welchy is ✨ depression. ✨

And, after they moved to their new house, Riley's mom told her to stay happy. And in the class scene, Joy stopped Sadness from making Riley cry so nobody would make fun of her. I mean, I wouldn't want to do it if I was the brand new kid in class.

I watched this when it first came out and I didn't notice A LOT of important things that I did rewatching it now. Like WHY Sadness was the hero, why would she was doing was helping, a lot of emotions shown in the movie and even that Joy was being too controlling almost and not allowing other emotions to do their job. I never noticed that before I was just like, yeah Joy is perfectly good. Made the ending so much more confusing lol. I like the movie so much more now.

Let’s be honest: Disgust has got to be one of the best characters in the movie
@videohistory722
@videohistory722 2 года назад
This movie is INCREDIBLE with color theory. Riley: striped shirt as they're moving with all colors on them to show theyre in harmony, or so it seems. yellow jacket on the first day of school because she's still young enough to be excited. Striped shirt sans blue and yellow at the dinner table because all of her emotions are fighting for control with joy and sadness gone. Black jacket because she's emotionally shutting down. Emotions: joy has blue hair, backing up the theory joy and sadness go hand in hand. Disgust has a purple ascot, suggesting disgust is mainly motivated by what scares us. Anger is wearing a red tie showing how when were angry, we can't see, hear, or feel anything else. Think, "seeing red". And finally Sadness is wearing a white turtleneck as a combination of all the emotions, like how all light is combined to make white light.

I love how well this movie displayed depression, it starts when her interests fade then she loses her train of thought to finally not being able to feel anything at all. Its so well done, I’ve heard that childhood psychiatrists show this movie to kids to help them better explain how they are feeling.

Since Im autistic and my brain isnt normal, I think my own Inside Out would be literally build different to represent my traits of autism and the emotions would probably be more quirky. Also that scene of Riley crying in school and the emotions panic and things go into chaos, thats technically me when Im in a meltdown and shutdown. And my Personality Islands would be: Art, Little Nightmares(special interest), family, friendship, creativity, music, fantasy, supernatural and video games. (-dang thats a lot of Islands)

I know a lot of people were too harsh on sadness for losing a core memory but in her defence she's always pushed to the back so how was she supposed to know that would happen? Plus the whole message was that you need sadness to be happy. She's just as important as the others.

Yep also got the falling-dream from time to time…and it really sucks to wake up with the feeling like you‘re about to have a heart attack or something. I think there is a theory that this happens when you fall asleep and the heartbeat slows too fast so the brain thinks we are dying and wakes you up again.🤔 Thanks for nothing, you useless body, I was just tying to sleep…

I now eat onions as an adult. My Mom made tomato sauce for me as a child. She diced the onions up very fine and cooked the sauce all day, so I did not know about the onions and had me try the sauce. I actually said it tasted good. She said yes your tastebuds will change., and sauce without onions really does not taste good.

I can't agree with hating joy. Sure she can be annoying, but if someone can hate joy then they better despise riley's parents because her mom was the one who made joy think she was the most important right when joy was about to accept that she wasn't. But I wouldn't consider anyone the bad guy because imo there isn't one. In fact, that's one of the things I love about the movie. There isn't really an bad guy and that helps everything the characters go through feel natural

No matter how many times I watch the movie or commentaries about it... Now every time, I cry at the end of the movie. The past few years I could not relate more to Riley's situation and her emotions, having to leave her old life away, feeling alone, wanting to run away, depression... It hits too close to home. When sadness is finally allowed to touch the memories and Riley confronts her parents it's so sad and beautiful. And the message that sadness is also an important emotion and we shouldn't try to hide our emotions makes me feel so relieved, and a bit less guilty when I feel sad and want to cry. This movie is really a masterpiece. The thing is when I was younger I didn't really understand this movie, I just thought it has a genius concept and cool message, but did not fully understand the message. Now that I'm way older and gone through some things I get it, and I can completely relate to Riley.... Which is kinda depressing to think about lol
