I bought the Nike+ Apple Watch to get me back into running, definitely didn't need it, but I've been out running a little more now just to justify the purchase.
I agree. Everyone's criticizing purchasing such an expensive treadmill, but if it makes the difference between sticking to your routine or failure, then it seems absolutely worth it.
Totally agree! So many people laughed at me when I spent 2k on my road bike - but it motivated the hell out of me riding the coastline and into a half-century ride (50 miles). My old bike was heavy and just not a fun ride.
Buying the bike makes more sense. You can run for free, but I think the bike would take less space and incorporate a tiny bit of strength training. Plus, you can still get a runner’s high on a normal treadmill.
buy a $200 treadmill and attach an iMac on it, save $3000 and watch anything you want, or play runescape...while you're at it get yourself a chair to sit on while you walk.
You can have the same results running on regular treadmill or outside. Good advice is to: 1. Run slower each time you're getting tired, but never stop. Walking still counts, but would be better if you could at least walk a bit faster. 2. Don't stare at numbers like distance and time. You start to think and imaging how tired are you ... your brain is trying to trick you! Better on treadmill open a movie or youtube, and when running outside play some audiobook, to focus your thoughts on something not related to running 3. First try to run slowly half a mile, next do the same distance, next do let's say 10% more ... or instead of distance, run as long as one chapter of audiobook you listen (or 5-15min video on youtube) 4. After few runs (maybe 10) you will feel that you're less tired than usual - that is where you're making progress 5. You don't have to run every day to finish full marathon - 1x km run every week would be more than enough
Coming from running cross country, and training people for 5 and 10k's this is a very under-rated comment. Run outside, don't feel bad if you're sore, and miss a day. Stick with it and keep your mind off of running if you're new, focus on something that works for you and MOSTLY KEEP RUNNING.
While looking for a faster progress I started excercising with a coach (olympics marathon runner) and this guy doesn't like your first point. According to him, each time you're getting tired, shut up and keep working, may even add some pace. This is where you break your mentality. I think this is a turning point somewhere between "I want to run 5k" and "I want to make a marathon in a competitive time". If it's only about fun, you don't progress fast enough and your plateau is very close, which is probably enough for staying healthy though. Therefore, point 5 is not true. I don't even know what you meant here, just never ever try marathon if you run just 1km run peer week, in the best case you won't finish. If your power of will is strong enough you'll end up with an injury.
This was a great review of the peloton, but as someone who just got into running a year and a half ago, I really liked watching your progression and completion of your first 5K, which is awesome! I remember the first time I ran a 5K and couldn’t believe I actually did it! I run everyday now, and I’m all the better for it.
I’m not mad at anyone dropping 4K on something like this if you can afford it. But you pretty much have to enroll in their subscription to use the live or previously recorded classes so you’re paying forever. I’ll just run on the free track near me which is more effective anyway since you get the forward thrust on the muscles you don’t get on the treadmill
The best of the best way to train your physical strength especially for running.. is thru an actual roads, terrain.. hills, downhills, and so on.. FORGET ABOUT THE DISTANCES.. and set how many minutes you want to run.
The BEST way... really. Its not possible that its the way you like to do it? I would say that if you actually ran on roads you would find that running for a certain amount of minutes has you leave home and be stuck out there once you say thats enough. Set a distance run when it feels right, walk when it doesn't rinse and repeat. Eventually you will make it the entire way. Done.
@@gusbisbal9803 that could also be working, plus if we run outside especially with uncontrollable temperature.. our body will adapt to it and make us stronger.. or "weaker" that also depends on our goals of how to recovery after the train or run..
Most people don’t learn to properly run on a treadmill cause they don’t have to lean forward and ‘hop’ leg to leg since the mill moves under you. But you can sorta compensate with a hill incline setting on a treadmill to force you to lean forward into it, not the most ideal but close biomechanics as you’ll get to actual running.
Thank you for sharing your story. I plan to get a less expensive treadmill for walking, and hearing your story about your health, routine, increases and even falling out of routine... really help. I feel like the realistic expectations I have for myself are valid.
I got my first smartwatch, just after I got diagnosed with MS, to force to go to a gym (which I've never been to before) Now I do 2hrs every day, and that's crazy for me!! I felt motivated by the little goals it gave me :)
First, congrats on completing your 5K. The Peloton devices seem cool but they are the kind of devices you shouldn't get if you even need to think about it. Besides, my current 'financial status' already includes frequent walking and a pretty strict diet so I'm good to go.
No Peloton treadmill for me but I'm very happy and inspired that you were able to beat something twice and still be a positive person and actually doing something to help other people. Like the Ancient One said to Doctor Strange, "It's not about you." So many people need to take that advice to Heart.
That is not what motivates you. The couches motivate you and train you with good form. Also they teach you about pacing. It’s actual training. You don’t just run for 30 min straights. It’s hills, sprints walks. Stuff like that.
Step 1. Buy a normal treadmill = 200$ Step 2. Buy a (big) Tablet (Android or Windows 10) + Floor Stand = 300-600$ (Optional Step) Buy a Smart Swatch or Activity Tracker = 50-200$ Step 3: ??? Step 4: Profit at least 3500$! (4500$ - 1000$) Plus: You can keep using the treadmill setup when the company goes out of business or stops running the service.
Natt, this was fantastic! Seriously - you weren't trying to sell the product (and that price is really off-putting) but the concept that it push you into a new lifestyle is very much a perspective they don't sell. I mean, people spend thousands on a nice bike, and hundreds on a nice pair of shoes - then don't stay motivate for one reason or another. That initial investment is definitely a driver to motivate for continued usage, but only goes so far. The COMMUNITY aspect of the Peloton products are huge - and I'd love to see a follow-up with more of that. Seriously great real-life review.
Forty Five Hundred Dollars.! That’s a lot of money, but with the large screen in the back and the rails on the sides, it should hold all of my clothes for a week ;-)
The Nike Running App has come a long way and free compared with a $4500 treadmill. For the past few years I’ve always had a huge benefit from the guided coach runs that range from speed runs to long runs with Olympic gold winning athletes.
I think the best part of their offering is the subscription service. If it let me sign up for live classes, I can see myself trying it out and maybe ending up with the service. It will be a win-win for both consumers (who can afford the actual equipment and who cant) and Peloton.
It doesn't matter how fancy you make it, I will always hate running on treadmills. Running outside is always the way to go, I live in Montreal and I'll still run through the snow in -20°C instead of those things
Two people at work dropped €800 to get a smart static bike mount, that you add a bike too. They get a lot out of it. Personally I'm using a Withings body+ scale and steel series HR watch. Better than the Fitbit charge 3 IMO and undercounts, which forces you to walk more. I prefer their version of sleep gamification. There is a 5K going in Frankfurt, but I get 8-9k a day so I figure I don't need it. I do my steps throughout the day. Force myself to stride,. Gets your heart up to speed quickly, I get an hour or more per day of intense exercise that way and 4-5 hours of moderate exercise.
Interesting concept. It could make sense when you live in a country with a bad weather all the time and are looking for motivation. Otherwise just spend like 1% of the price and join a club/community and have real human interactions. I met a lot of people that way and made real bounds. It's much better than interacting with people who don't even know you exist, and it's much harder to quit because you don't want to let the others down.
Most important tool for me when I started running was simply keeping "scores". Follow a running program and then jotting down all the milages and times is a great way to see the progress and appreciate your own increasing performance. These days I more or less just use a Fitbit for my running and (important) some quality running shoes that was hand-picked for me in a runners store according to my running style.
Congrats on your accomplishment. It’s a big deal and I can relate to not loving to run. It sounds like the Paleton helped you get over that particular hump and progress from there. For me, it was the Apple Watch Series 4. It helped me get motivated to go to the gym a little more often and that was all I needed to keep it going on a consistent basis. Gamification sure helps
My first cheap polar wrist band was what changed my life and helped me do a total body transformation. Though I only needed to lose some 50 lbs. That total shift in attitude towards exercising and staying active was the result of that little tech.
Just to add some context. What I find appealing in this video is its life with technology. It's a great feeling to see how this gadget helped someone reach an aspirational goal.
"Peloton" is Finnish and means "fearless". I agree that you have to have a lot of courage to invest 5000$ to a treadmill. I think I'm going to go running outside since it's summer at its fullest.
I used to run outside few times a week but since moving to Australia and living in a big city it’s been challenging. Runners and cyclists also age bit quicker so I prefer other forms of cardio, that’s gentler on my joints
I hope my gym gets these. Even though I prefer running outside, weather or city fumes can disincentivise the outdoor exertion when health is the goal. This kind of tread is so much better on the knees and they usually get up to proper speeds. Most people are complacent enough to not even try sprinting on a treadmill - ca 30kmh; 18.75mph - but plenty of equipment can barely even handle a brisk run - 19kmh; 11.9mph - from an 80kg;176lbs guy without „fading“. I.e. inconsistent speeds from microslowing because it can’t handle the impact, leading to a jittery, dangerous run. Y’all got any info on that?
30kph = 100m in 12s. This is dangerous for a treadmill. Also if you could do 30kph for 45s, you’d be at the olympics. If you could do it for 2mins you’d be a world record holder.
Tony Bell It’s dangerous on treadmills that aren’t up to the task. Premium ones with a focus on performance do this easily. Athletic republic released one in 2012 that could handle 28mph. Since we’re already on RU-vid you can look it up. Most people who regularly train can hit 30kph, so it’s definitely relevant if I’m to spend multiple k$, since I won’t buy two.
Tony Bell Your confusion stems only from your continuous movement of the goal post. Without getting too condescending, saying a pro mill doesn’t have to get to 30 kph because the fastest man alive peaked at 44,7 kph *against air resistance* in a 100m race seems futile enough. Reconsidering that with every incremental reduction in speed the amount of people able to reach these performance levels increases exponentially makes it seems pretty absurd. Every nfl pro, every baseball pro, every soccer pro, every ncaa runner, every college pro, every bro athlete can run this fast. There’s a vid of some quarterback running 25mph in a tv show. Tons of sports require training in intense maximum performance dashes for just a few seconds. Clearly if they are asking enthusiast level money, they should deliver what virtually all pros can/have to do. It’s either possible or not viable.
I’m inspired! I really want the Pelaton. I just don’t know if it will be too loud for my neighbors and also the space. The bedroom is also the only place I can put the Pelaton Tread. Has anyone put a treadmill in the bedroom before? How is it? Does your room smell?
Interesting and cool review. But the price is insane. I could just run outside in the great outdoors, but the great thing about a treadmill is that you can catch up with some TV at the same time... And for some reason that appeals. That said I wouldn't pay that much money, and I'm really surprised you didn't bring up the price as a factor. Or compare it against other treadmills.
This was a review unit we were supplied with, but if I had the option to keep it, I would probably still prefer the digital classes to take outside or to a more affordable gym. - Natt
good presentation not sure if a $5k machine is worth the price to learn to run? I can see adding a treadmill for speed workouts or interval training. I’m surprised that peloton didn’t take your running experience into account I would have recommended 3 days/week for first month to allow your body to adapt to running and avoid injuries like shin splints. After a month of running you add a 4th day to your routine and a 5th day in month 3. Hopefully peloton recommended stretching before/after each workout. i hope your still running with time the runners high will bite you and then your hooked! P.S. Peloton just open on the NASDAQ $26/share.....
@@ClaxtonBay123 That's actually not true. For example, basic functions like seeing your heart rate do NOT function unless you subscribe to the service. This is NOT a normal treadmill with an optional subscription. Without the subscription, the device is worse than a normal treadmill.
If $4k means very little to you, it's probably a fun gadget. But it costs $0 to go run outside, track time and distance on a free app and listen to spotify, podcasts or whatever on a music player.
Nice review. The social aspect of the Peleton is nice. Apples activity app also has such a competitive feature. But among friend contacts. But I’m curious. Isn’t it better to join a gym or run in an open space for a start.
PLus the other thing to realize that makes running on a treadmill so much easier, aside from not actually pushing so hard to go an actual distance, theres no rocky or hard concrete terrain, and the ai is usually very mild since treadmills are almost entirely used in doors( cause if your outdoor,s why not just run outdoors then?). So sure, I could run at full setting on a treadmill for over 2 hours, but actual running on the street in the cold or heat? 2 min lol.
Smileyfaceanimations ahahhahahahahhahhahahahhhahahhaha you lazy Americans, so sensitive of some water droplets, or the joy of clean air and new routes.
Congrats on finishing!! While the Peloton looks really cool I just can't see spending $4,500 for something I can do for free with just a bit more motivation and self-discipline. Then again maybe spending that much money will force you to use it early and often but, again, I'm sure you can achieve the same effect without spending that amount of money. I could see starting with the $20 digital membership to see how that works.
I agree, definitely start with lower stakes investments like that before deciding to splurge. If discipline is all you need, the classes might be enough (or do what I did and find an important cause to motivate you!) Good luck! - Natt
If it was $2000-$2500 it would be a hit product but double that price makes it a silly enthusiast only product. You would have to be running multiple times a day to make that worth it.
First of all, congratulations Natt on finishing your first 5K and also beating cancer TWICE. But I don't think that this equipment is worth the money, running outdoors is always better, so so so so much better. Even better if you also ditch your smartphone and headphones (I would still use a Garmin or equivalent device to track my performance and have stats on my progress). But $4000 for something that is actually WORSE than running on the street, which is... you know... free... I don't see the point.
Thanks. But as you'll see if you watch the whole thing, I did say in the end that it wasn't the hardware that felt worth it for me, but the class experience, which you CAN take outside :)
I dont see how everyone is saying "just go run outside" does everyone live in California with perfect weather or something? In Texas you only get a couple months a year where it is bearable to just BE outside....
I love the gamification element of it! But that price is insane. I have a really good elliptical which “only” cost €1000. I’m thinking about attaching my old iMac to it somehow, though, because I really love that - it won’t get me gamification, but Netflix is not so bad, either. ;) Gamification is done on my Apple Watch anyway.
I love her, the Verge. she's real and relatable, unlike this thing , which is just run-of-the mill without it's fancy screen, but it did help her achieve her goal... so.. but the price, its just out of reach for a lot of us.
I started my running using treadmill for almost 2 years. Then one day the neighbor complained about its noise. I started running outside. Can never use treadmill again..Now mostly do trails if possible
Buy a good running watch and go run outside. They add the gamification. Added bonus: You get fresh air, you can run with other people, and you save $4000. Interesting video nevertheless.
Any treadmill is a treadmill. It's just like telling people the books to read to make a distinction. Any treadmill will do as long as you can put the effort
In most of the marathons held, a 5km run in called a fun run. It’s called a fun run for a reason and I don’t think you need that much preparation for that and that doesn’t justify the 4500 dollar treadmill
