Absolutely agree on the lack of transparency in pension fees. Not only the fees but even how they perform. In the last year I've educated myself through RU-vid videos like yours and realised how most pension schemes from your employer are rip-off. Mine, my wife's. All big names, workplace pensions and non. Finally opened a SIPP with Vanguard and the clarity is something else. You can see your fees but also have clarity on how each fund is performing. I just wish I new this years ago. Another thing I've noticed it's a common trait in the big companies to have a confusing fee structure, like utilities, insurance, finance.... It's seems like a strategy to confuse the customer so they can hide fees and high prices

The pensions situation in the Uk is ridiculous. I was talking to two friends over the weekend, one of them assumed that the default pension plan would be best, as the company would choose what's best for them which is a reasonable assumption.They had absolutely no knowledge of the stock market or what their pension was beign invested in, I'd been part of the same company in the past, so I knew the default fund was terrible, sop told her about it. The other friend has a workplace pension, but because of how it's been set up, they don't have access to choose anything other than risk profiles, so they coan't just select to invest in the US or global stock index's.

Thanks for posting this video, Toby. I think it might be the best video on your channel. Sadly, the grifters easily outweigh content like this. You covered a lot here, and didn't even mention the crooks who post on every financial video about how they know of a financial advisor who 10X their investment in a month (along with responses to the post backing up this claim). I really hope this video will save someone out there from financial disaster, but it's an uphill battle.

Absolutely smashing. A good lesson for all the new investors. There is nothing called get Rich quick. Everything takes time and bit of effort. Please enlighten on the pensions. Especially the NHS pensions in which all doctors, nurses and allied staff pay into…and then have to pay a pension tax bill for something they have not even seen
@TomsPersonalFinance
@TomsPersonalFinance 8 месяцев назад
The ridiculous thing about pensions is the rules keep changing. How is anyone meant to plan their pension/retirement when the annual and lifetime allowances keep changing? The lifetime allowance is now abolished, but the next Government can just as easily reinstate it. That being said, breaching the previous lifetime allowance and facing a tax bill was unlikely for the vast majority of people on NHS pensions. It shouldn't be something anyone has to think about though! Not to mention, unlike a defined contribution pension, you can't access your full NHS Pension until age 68 unless you take an early withdrawal penalty. Best bet is to have an ISA and your own SIPP alongside the NHS pension, which you can access at an earlier age. Obviously the problem with opening a SIPP is that if the pension lifetime allowance gets reinstated, there is a strong chance NHS pension + SIPP will breach it. So, there is no easy solution. Rant over as a fellow NHS employee 🙃

Well ranted, these things need to be called out. Company pension default funds and financial advisor fees are just outrageous. My advisor wanted 4 grand for setting up a stocks and shares ISA and transferring an old company pension to a new pension, both had high ongoing fes of 0.46%. I got the impression immediately they just wanted my money. I told them very politely to piss off.
@ChrisShawUK
@ChrisShawUK 8 месяцев назад
Fees based on a % rather than effort required are the pits. For transactional things such as setting up an ISA and managing a transfer, it should be possible to quote a fee in advance, before they even learn how much you've got.

May I make a video suggestion? I noted that, unlike some others on this platform, when revealing your portfolio you pointed to times when return was negative. Whilst this didn't stop you from continuing investing (rightfully so), perhaps those not so experienced would atop. I wondered if a video showing what would hve happened to your portfolio, if, for example, you had sold/stopped investing in bad times and started again when things got 'smooth' - even if it took just a year period to show the consequences. May be a bit of hassle doing the calcs but potentially a 'why we keep going through the ups and downs' real-life example.

Alongside the cost and poor performance of many workplace pensions the biggest scandal is fact that people have no idea they are not contributing enough. Employers should be required to provide training on pensions. People look at the retirement standard of living their parents had and assume they will be in the same position , but the transition to all DC workplace pensions means most employers now contribute far less than before and the minimum employee contribution is way too low. This is a ticking bomb not just for those who are going to be much poorer in old age than they expect but also the economy in general.

Great video, recently got into index fund investing and went with the Vanguard all world accumulating. Also in the process of finding out how my Royal Mail pension is invested as the figure they’ve estimated it would be worth in 30 years seems low considering how much is already in there!

I also work for the Royal Mail and have done for over 20 years. Once a year you can request a transfer out figure from the Pensions Team - it is quite a thick document that gives a good breakdown. The latest scheme appears to be invested in cash, not compounding assets such as stocks. I intend to get out in a few years and transfer out whatever I can because the CAGR (compound annual growth rate) is diabolical, from what I can see.

@@seamus7054Yeah I’ve been with them 6 years now, received a document stating how much was in there currently and how much would be there at age 60 so in 30 years time, initially it sounded like quite a lot but plugging the numbers into a simple compound interest calculator doesn’t make for good percentages baring in mind I’m at the top tier of contribution and what a simple stocks and shares ISA could achieve over 30 years with a conservative 6-7% return!

What are your thoughts on Vanguard Target Retirement Funds?
@adrianl5899
@adrianl5899 8 месяцев назад
They are designed to de-risk through what's called lifestyling. Essentially as the retirement date approaches, you see your equities % reduced and bonds % increased. This method is really for those who will convert their pot to an annuity, as they need to be de-risking in the period before converting to an annuity. It's not really a design for people who want to use drawdown. A lot of people use them not realising this, and it's really quite fundamental. I do not use them, and would not use them by choice*. And that's the case even if I did want an annuity. This is because I can more cheaply run a passive portfolio than those Vanguard TR funds. I can also do my own rebalancing in a sensible way, without having the imposition of having to have pretty much a set % and be selling/buying too frequently. Vanguard are popular and I do use some products. But they're actually not the cheapest in many cases, nor are their products even that well performing in some cases. *If I had a workplace pension which only offered a lifestyling fund, I would want to pay into it to at least maximise my employer matched contribution. But what I would do is to set the retirement date in a way that matches my risk appetite. So, if I don't want them to move me to bonds too quickly for my taste, I set my retirement date later than whatever it is currently set to. (The opposite would be true if you actually wanted to be put into bonds sooner than what your existing retirement date would do). All that said, like the Lifestrategy ones, these products are not 'wrong' so to speak and may be fine IF people understand what they are for, their pros and cons, and if they match their goals. They are just not for me.

@adrianl5899
@adrianl5899 8 месяцев назад
In the UK, the average life expectancy of a 48 yo male is 84, with a 25% chance of reaching 93. Thus, even though you've started late and the contributions being made to invest will need to be higher than they would be if you started earlier (to get the same result), there are many years left to grow your investments. Secondly, because pensions are now very flexible, you don't reach a set age and HAVE to convert it to an annuity (though you can, if you want). Thus, while you've missed out, you have plenty to gain going forward. The principles remain the same - know your risk appetite, know what your target is and contribute accordingly, and realistically, to reach that target.

The mis-quotation of "diworsification" is the most annoying thing in the word. It was originally coined by Peter Lynch and the point he was making is that we shouldn't buy stocks for the sake of diversifying as this negatively impacts our risk/reward ratio. Actual currency is backed by the country that issued it, Crypto is mined by companies whose aim is to make a profit from it & it very value is volatile to make longtime planning, other Crypto Currency holders with big stakes have a self invested interest to get other people to buy it. I think it’s important that 99.9% of people don’t over complicate investing and buy a low cost index fund. However, there will be people who genuinely enjoy the research, the reading and who can see a career for themselves as an investment professional. For these people I say, give it a go. If you fail miserably over a 5-10 year period, the ETF’s will still be there. If you succeed, you might have found a life time passion and career which is something very rare these days.

I am stuck with BC&E People's Pension until I move firm or retire as they don't allow partial transfers. I've asked my employer to consider switching to another provider. And yes, it had put me in some crummy default fund. Bet 99% of my colleagues have never even looked. I put my own money into my Vanguard SIPP.

Get off the proverbial bench Toby :) Good to get things off your chest but in a constructive way. Agree with your comments but playing devils advocate about the charges, all these charges go towards the business and profits and potential Dividends paid out to shareholders/fund investors. And so the cycle carries on and on. Charges should be more competitive and I had hoped that Vanguard had started this trend but there are always, like you said, add on charges folks don't realise are there. Defo make some more vids Mr T :)

Seems like I am in the minority reading the comments. I paid off my mortgage at 29 years old from Tesla and Bitcoin investments. Always factor in inflation to your gains. Index funds will barely cover that. You will be treading water. Innovative technology is where you make real gains, but a lot of research is necessary.

Investing is like sea fishing Piss poor planning will lead to Piss poor performance & instead of being flush from liquidity you are left high an dry with nothing to show for it . Research firms , do not try become rich , try become better off year upon year an wealth will build sure you can lose it all but building back will be easier as you've learnt from the experiance ( never getting married again ) i learnt 😂

Is it worth doing a video on tax loss harvesting, for people with money in taxable accounts?

Defintely worth a mention, i'll have to slip that into a video maybe around the new tax year as a reminder of the new limits of capital gains and dividends :)

Good rant Toby. I think the investment industry is like many other industries, in that it is seems to be deliberately over-complicated, with many acronyms and long-winded terminologies, to make a closed shop and justify the existence of "experts" who make a living helping "normal" people to navigate all the jargon. Thanks to people like you, I'm learning how to cut through the BS! 😆

Great video Toby. I didn't really get interested in investing until quite late in life, although I've built up a decent pension over the years I've probably paid way too much in fees simply because I had no clue. I've learned a lot from a selection of you tube channels, namely Pension craft, James Shack, Damien, Pete Mathews and yourself. Luckily over the years I've become naturally cynical so filtering useful from crap content seems quite easy for me, but I do feel for those in their early years seduced by "guaranteed, quick and easy money".

No. 2 really gets to me. Classic example is a Motley Fool article saying “here’s how much I’d be making in dividend income if I’d invested £10,000 in national grid.” I mean, who in their right mind would invest £10,000 in national grid? 😂 I used to subscribe to their stock advisor service but those kind of click bait articles did my head in, so now I’m 100% index and chill 😎

I've been a gambler for nearly 40 years and it's worrying that there are so many similarities between the two industries. I know folk that wouldn't have a fiver on a horse but would stick £500 on a stock tip because shares are 'investing' (which is smart) as opposed to betting (which is for mugs). Financial influencers are no better than tipsters, in fact I'd argue that's they're worse and something that should be illegal. Didn't a couple of journalists from the Mirror not end up in clink for similar activities ... one of the fellas involved ended up editing a gambling magazine when he got out, Leeson wrote a column in it too ... the magazine went bust. Keep up the good work.

Toby, I have been watching your videos for a few months and from what I can tell your advice always leads back to one simple investment strategy. Invest through your ISA to the max, use the EFT with the lowest fees available. Choose which index to invest in by pinning the tail on the donkey method, as no one on earth knows what is going to happen, tomorrow, and the only way to ensure this strategy works is by investing over the long-term.

:smiles: How to make me feel better about having a handful of very sober ETF's in my investment bag (I always think calling it a "portfolio" is a bit cliched Middle Class, even if it is the proper word :D). It is scary that the stock markets of the world are, pretty much, based on feelings and thus we can never rely on *any* aspect of it to perform consistently. Just look at the kicking those of us holding lots of bonds (because it's what we were told was the sensible thing to do as you get older) took recently. That was supposed to be a golden rule for protecting your investments as retirement gets closer ... and it failed! I'm an economist (or I was in my youth) and interned as a commodities trader, so you'd think I would have a better idea than most and I still swim about in the financial sea like a concussed seal looking for somewhere to escape the killer whales :chuckles ruefully:

I think that the Damo video really highlights the unfairness in the auto enrolment industry its so opaque still waiting for a statement of charges from mine 18 months after joining and the performance reports published in Q1-4 is always at least 3 months behind sometimes as much as 6 just awful it would be appreciated if you took a stab from your point of view given that invest engine are introducing a SIPP itmight be a good moment.
