That Liverpool 2001 treble squad was one of the best Liverpool have had in the last 30 years. Owen, Fowler, Litmanen, Heskey, Gerrard, Murphy, Hamann, McAllister, Redknapp, Barmby, Berger, Smicer, Hyppia, Carragher, Babbel, Ziege etc. They should have reached a CL final the year after but went out to Leverkusen in the quarters in a freak game.
Ziege was simply awesome. I know he was there for a short period of time , but he is the best left back we ever had even better than Robertson who is a legend and Alan Kennedy who scored a winning goal in a European Cup final and is also a Liverpool super legend.
@@sebastianvella8992 he wasn’t awesome for Liverpool. He was there one season, and wasn’t first choice. Didn’t get picked at left back - Jamie Carragher started both the FA cup final & UEFA cup final at left-back. Gregory Vignal a rookie 19 year old left-back was preferred on the bench to Zeige for both those finals. So I’m not sure how a third choice left back who was there one season eclipsed every other left-back in Liverpool’s history.
@@theenforcer22 He was first choice until he got injured. Not even Carragher himself would say that he was a better full back or overall player than Ziege as he would have all of Europe laughing at him. In the 80's are left backs were Alan Kennedy who is a legend, Beglin whose career was cut short by injury and Burrows. Only Kennedy can argue he was better than Ziege. However his overall career was still inferior to Ziege. In the 1990's our left backs were fatso Dicks, right back Jones who was awesome as a right back forced to play as as a left wing back by stupid Evans and later we had boring Byornebe. Who in his right mind would argue for any of them over Ziege. In the era after Ziege we had Riise who had a great shot, but was not good at defending and certainly no one can argue he was better than Ziege. In the last decade before Robertson we had poor left backs mostly Spanish, Brazilian and Italians the variuos Aurelio, Insua, Enrique, Moreno and the Italian guy who scored the freekicks. All of them forgettable. As for the later Shankly era it was mostly Alec Lindsay who played as left back and yes from what I've seen in videos he was very good. Joey Jones who played in the first European Cup triumph was a Welsh International, but was arguably the weakest player on that fantastic squad. From what I've read Gerald Byrne was also a very competent left back in the 1960's and was part of Ramsey's 1966 squad.
@@sebastianvella8992 Zeige was a great left back yes, but my point is that his reputation is not based on his time at Liverpool. He got injured yes, but by the end of the season he couldn’t even make the bench for two big finals behind the likes of Stephen Wright and Gregory Vignal. Houllier wasted no time getting rid of him at the end of the season. Zeige even himself would say his one season at Liverpool was a low point in his career. He actually regretted joining. That’s not a successful stint. No need to body shame Julian Dicks, he was just big boned. I get what you’re saying, but it’s more a case that Zeige was one of the best left backs AT Liverpool, not FOR Liverpool.
Danny Murphy was so underrated at Liverpool. He could find a pass, chip in with goals and he was up there with some of the best free kick and penalty takers.
@@MultiStu08 Get your boots on mate, no doubt Danny Murphy couldn't lace your boots 🙄 Try putting a free kick in the top corner at the Stretford End and then I might take you serious 🙈
@@themightyredmen I'm not a professional footballer so I don't have to get my boots on; it lacks credulity to say a person can't judge a footballer because he isn't a professional footballer himself. He was a shit player, scoring a set piece here and there doesn't mean he was good enough for Liverpool.
"If you enjoyed this you can watch the full 2hr episode with Danny Murphy here" 2 hours of Danny Murphy. I think that goes against a clause in the Geneva convention under torture. 😂😢
I'm a Charlton fan myself and although his time at The Valley was short, even in that time he established himself as a great enforcing influence who is remembered fondly. Takes something special to become a club legend after just 2 years
Back in 2005 I was at the Everton v Charlton game at Goodison Park in the period David Moyes was in charge. Danny was in the Charlton team and stood out in midfield. Michel Arteta in direct opposition struggled against him. Danny once said he had the chance of joining Everton around this time, but loyalties got in the way. That afternoon James Beattie, a big money signing from Southampton made his debut for Everton and never quite made it. Danny went on to play for Spurs. This seems to show how clubs pay huge fee's for players even today who don't fit in, yet have long term contacts which handicaps a club moving them on. If Danny would have crossed the Park, he would have improved the Everton team back then, no end.
Dnt forget Birmingham were robbed in the League cup final that season . Not being given the most blatant penalty ever not given in a cup final (other than Alan Hansens deliberate hand ball on the goaline in the 1984 League cup final against Everton. Common Factor?
Michael Owen is probably the most hated player in Newcastle United's history , when he came on as a sub for manure at st James I have never in all of my years seen a reception like it . The booing was relentless , he has never and will never be forgiven .
Produced big moments for liverpool. Would have kept him if he was happy to fight for his place. Other attacking midfield options at the time kewell and smicer weren't as good as murphy imo garcia was an upgrade on murphy though
aye was canny for yous, but his punditry is up there with the biased of Ferdinand and keown. shearer is pretty shite, but at least he talks with his honesty. probably because he has the confidence that us Geordies will still love him, unlike these other pundits
"You will end up playing me"... If a manager doesn't want you as part of their plans, you can stay all you want and he can sit you in reserves, you're only lowering your own stock over time whilst you do that. It's very slim to try and remain, but if a manager has decided, it's done
That isn't entirely true. There are many players that proved managers wrong and ended up being in the team. Also fan pressure could make managers change their mind.
I was disappointed with Owen but i still respect him for the things he did at the club. That cup final against the gooners i was getting proper stick from a couple of my mates in the pub who were arsenal fans because they were all over us and when he popped those 2 goal in it was a sweet, sweet moment. Nothing like giving a couple of salty gooners sh*t while celebrating another trophy.😂😂
What’s up with these people, feeling sorry for themselves, get a grip, you’ve not been asked to go down a mine. Some of these generations have got no resilience, your are not victims, sh1t happens in life deal with it, don’t be looking for sympathy!
There is nothing wrong with people feeling down or showing emotion. It has happened since the beginning of time(even in your generation). It's human nature.
Danny was great for Liverpool, but I can't forget him scoring against little Yeovil, then running to their fans & putting his finger to his lips. This was Yeovil, they were crushed, I just thought there's no need for that
I know a really stupid comment when you realise City have a bigger average gate than Liverpool and hold the record for the most 84,000 plus crowds in English football 😂
Smicer? Nunez? Kewell? Riise playing left midfield to accommodate Traore at left back? These are all players who played in cup finals that season who did not perform for Liverpool as well as Murphy did.
Back on about owen In the end reality is these players are paid mercenaries who are out for selves. Football and clubs are just a business But michael is a clown like🤣🤣🤣
Players won the champions league not Rafa.We were getting spanked and he had his hand forced. He didn't learn and was ultra defensive again in the final and we lost very tamely.
He was a bit strict and was also quite rigid regarding his tactics though I don't understand why Gerrard would be bitter towards him. He probably played his best football under rafa.
@@HamsaT12 but some managers are notorious for doing that to their best players in order to get the best out of them. Players shouldn’t be that soft and sensitive anyway towards criticism
Hated Rafa s football at Newcastle. Most hung on to Rafa because hated Ashley and thought Rafa was on there side. Rafa got plenty cash for sale in pocket of players Ashley bought in
I hate Michael Owen & I started supporting Liverpool because of him. But I hate him like nobody’s business. So a proper Liverpool fan will never forgive him.
Didn't like Benitez, but to pretend that he deserved to be anywhere near that squad just reinforces Murphy's previous comments about being a cokehead. Average footballer, dreadful pundit, deluded muppet.
A good player but he'd have ended up a squad player at best - Garcia and Alonso went on to become legends and it's a sad situation but most players get replaced eventually - no one is bigger than the club
