I am not sure about landing but I think they should give it a trolley base for movement on the ground and take off. Naturally the trolley would not be attached and just be left behind with take off. This would minimise the wear and tear on the bottom of the craft when on the ground and especially when lifting off because I note a slight forward movement on take off that would grind the bottom of the craft. Just a though.

I'm sorry, but with a usable load of only 230 lbs, a maximum flight time of 20 minutes at maximum airspeed of 62 mph, for close to $100,000 - this is not the future of aviation, it is a rich person's playtoy. Battery technology needs to progress by at least an order of magnitude before this sort of vehicle has even the slightest chance of supplanting conventional internal combustion powered aircraft. It seems to me that one obvious risk besides a power failure of some kind in mid flight (does it have a parachute?), is the crafts PID controller freaking out, for any number of reasons, like, for example, if the plastic sheets used as a makeshift landing pad gets caught up in the props on take off or landing, so that it crashes violently, with the full force of the motors at maximum throttle (experienced drone pilots know what I am talking about), or pieces of a broken prop damage the craft or the pilot through the thin canopy.

@DarkDay2012
@DarkDay2012 7 месяцев назад
Ever is longer than you expect. Appreciable distance and weight wasn't even a thing until like 100 years ago. Long haul trucking in America didn't start until WWI, and 10 years ago batteries were definitely not powerful enough to keep a car going for 100+ miles, much less a truck. Batteries WILL eventually replace things. They just need more time to get better. Depending on your health/age, you might even live to see it.
@velocity2654
@velocity2654 6 месяцев назад
@@DarkDay2012 Initially, consumers were staying away from electric cars because of "range anxiety". Now that range has increased, and charging stations are more available, battery lifespan has taken over. Batteries are a very significant cost in the manufacture of electric vehicles and can easily exceed the value of a few year old vehicle. If we can not drastically reduce the cost, and increase the longevity, we will have millions of late model cars headed to the recycler.

What will change the EV future is to be able to convert nuclear directly to DC power. Currently, nuclear power goes through the thermal cycle of heat to water to steam to drive a turbine to turn a generator. Steam power! The batteries don't just stop working. In an emergency you'd be able to drain them below the specified limit to get down relatively safely. The batteries would then be bricks but you don't fall out of the sky. Even with those stubby wings it can probably manage a reasonable glide ratio.

ssssh! dont talk about redundancy when you have "space age technology" to lead you by the nose! mmmm. vtol. the most inefficient way to get off the ground. where ALL youre power has tyo go towards directly displacing an equal mass of air to the vehicle mass simply to stay aloft. rather than to gain velocty and let the basics of airflow do the majority of the work. (stick the same battery pack and motor output equivalent on a glider, for instance, and see just how FAR it can fly then...) mmmm, reliance on electronic systems to be 100% reliable. no magic brown smoke allowed. no bad solder joints or fractured SMD capacitors. like any multi rotor aircraft besides helicopters and other variable pitch designs... no ability to auto rotate when ONE engine fails. i dont know what this modern urge to be stupid is, but yeah. throw lots of propellors on, some carbon fiber, a few batteries and everyone thinks its the best thing since sliced bread. probably has a touch screen interface as well? because we all know touch screen is the epitome of superior technology and usability! human race ius going backwards at an alarming rate.

This is an appealing ultralight EV, but for practical GA purposes, It's going to need: * 200 miles' range with 200 reserve at 10,000ft, at 100knots * (retractible) landing gear * seat 2 plus minimal cargo * trailerable Preferably with some aero lift and some glide, so it's not 100% powered lift.
@TheShadowSlayer007
@TheShadowSlayer007 6 месяцев назад
There’s no reason for this thing to have such high speed or range. It’s a skipper meant for short hops to local destinations 200 miles and that speed is overkill for something like this. 100 mile range with a 25-50 mile reserve is about the most you would honestly need with a speed of 75-80 knots. All your other points either substantially increase weight (therefore reducing range/speed) or reducing capacity. It’s an ultralight vtol, these things have strict weight and power limits otherwise they fall into a much stricter category of powered aircraft and become significantly more difficult to get a license for.

It's best to compare this to a conventional quadcopter where the four motors are pointed straight up perpendicular to the frame. In that configuration you are level when you take off, but to go forward requires pitching forward to vector the thrust rearward. If a conventional quadcopter were manned, then you'd take off sitting level, but be pitched forward out of the seat and looking down at the ground all the time whenever you wanted to go fast forward. So these guys angled the body back relative to the motors so that when it takes off (motors still pointing straight up) your seat is angled back, but as you go fast forward, the body of the aircraft, and your seat now become relatively level.
@tcolondovich2996
@tcolondovich2996 4 месяца назад
Interesting how they designed the body like a flat disc, but turned it sideways to not get any advantage from the flying wing design, such as lift, or controllability when it loses power. In my opinion it's just as dangerous as a helicopter, which requires a pilot's license that is beyond the standard one needed to fly a plane. Except this requires no license, right? Great idea. At least make the wings and wing body useful by rotating the body 90 degrees into the correct orientation, changing the orientation of the wings, and increasing their size. Not only would that increase safety by potentially adding the ability to make a controlled landing, but it would also lower power consumption if you don't have it shaped like a lawn dart vertically.

You're required to land before civil twilight, which is usually about 25-30 minutes after sunset. You can take off at the start of civil twilight, again about 25-30 minutes before sunrise. The times vary and it's based on Sun position, not actual time, but those numbers are in the ballpark. The aircraft must have and use navigation lights during the time before sunrise and before sunset.

This machine is a prime example of the limitations of present battery technology. The batteries do not have enough storage capacity compared to the weight of the batteries. This is also why electric cars and pickups are obscenely heavy and therefore inefficient. In order for batteries to become viable for large vehicles they must have the energy density of liquid hydrocarbon fuel. Present li ion batteries are usable for small vehicles such as bicycles or motorcycles.
@XenonJohnD
@XenonJohnD 5 месяцев назад
The weight does not make a wheeled electric vehicle especially inefficient if you have regenerative braking and an aerodynamic shape. At speed the aerodynamics matter much more than the extra weight with regard to the range of an EV. For aircraft things might be very different though.
@kevinnielsen1356
@kevinnielsen1356 5 месяцев назад
@@XenonJohnD Hmm, if that where true why are performance vehicles as light as possible? A light weight EV also has regen braking and an aero shape.A lightweight vehicle will always be more energy efficient then a heavy vehicle when the payload remains constant.

Sorry, this thing needs to fly twice as fast with 3 times the useful load and 6 times the time, for maybe double the price. Then you have something. Add navigational equipment and you really have something. Yes, this is a start I realize. Someday there will be battery technology to do what I ask, but not for quite some time.

20 min flight time, at what cost? If you're truly passionate about flying, yet for some reason don't want to become a certificated pilot, you'll get a whole lot more bang for your buck from an ultralight. I also have no understanding of the desire to fly in a vehicle that cannot be controlled following a power failure.
@Logan4661
@Logan4661 5 месяцев назад
Some things in life have nothing to do with practicality. The man decided to spend his money to satisfy his desire to have an aircraft that looks and performs exactly like that one. Fortunately for people that don't have the desire to own one for whatever reason, all you have to do is not buy it.

@@scupking Of course it's a possibility, as it is with every other form of transportation, plus slips, trips, falls, and poisoning, faltal accidents are always a possibility. @scupking

@@Logan4661It seems like an unnecessary risk.. I will stick to flying 172s.. At least if I have a failure I can glide and have a chance.
@Logan4661
@Logan4661 5 месяцев назад
@@scupking As I said, you are free to assess and take risk however you see fit, but "It seems like..." isn't always a great indicator. A motor failure in a 172 not only allows you glide, but FORCES you to glide to a one shot landing. If an entire power bus on the Blackfly fails, you're going to want to land very soon, but you will have time to find a spot and set it down slowly, and since it doesn't need a runway or road, you would have a lot more options for putting it down, right here, right now... slowly. Besides, you said that it was simply the possibility that put you off, but surely you are aware of the possibility of fatal crashes in GA??

The funny thing is that the just made advances in batteries that get rid of the need for rare minerals and increases the charge time dramatically. Too bad all these companies pushed electric veh8cles too early and damaged the economy and reputation of such things.
