Stuff I use as a full time writer/author (that you may have spotted in this video!) (affiliate links are afoot):
WRITING/WORK STUFF
Macbook Air. Doesn’t really need my recommendation. amzn.to/3soroc2
iPAPA laptop case: amzn.to/3slflwf
Mind-Reader adjustable/portable laptop desk. I LOVE this thing. Typing with my arms at an angle has drastically reduced elbow/wrist pain. amzn.to/2OYh0tX
Bluelight blocker glasses: amzn.to/2VAG51u
Best writing pens, hands down. I use them every time I revise a book. amzn.to/311nRoP
Acer monitor. I kind of hate the word gamechanger but this really was that kind of purchase. amzn.to/3vH71Kh
Brother laser printer. I won’t lie, this thing is a behemoth. But I’ve had it since 2017 and I think I’ve had maybe one paper jam? It works great, it’s super consistent, A++ for printing manuscripts. amzn.to/3tzIvZE
Alphasmart Neo2. Highly highly recommend. amzn.to/3cStKui
I'm a Skillshare Ambassador! I've been binging their courses on filmmaking and video editing, as well as writing, but there's all kinds of stuff for creative types! Try it out FREE for two week! skillshare.eqcm.net/RyG57R
COFFEE STUFF
Ninja coffee maker. amzn.to/31533Nu
Cold brew pitcher. amzn.to/3cSKVM9
Zulay milk frother. amzn.to/3r7DDJu
VIDEO MAKING STUFF
Canon G7X Mark iii camera. I love the flip up screen (ie, you can see yourself as you film) and the fact that there’s a mic port. amzn.to/3r9BfCb
Savage studio lights. I mostly use these for ‘talking head’ videos. amzn.to/3r7G6Un
Ubeesize 10” ring light. That’s the little guy sitting on my desk. I mostly use it for vlogging. amzn.to/31hqpzD
JJC mini tripod. amzn.to/3feXxjJ
Rode clip mic. amzn.to/2OSaLb2

First off, congratulations! Excited to see where your Act 2 takes you! Secondly, I feel in the past couple videos you've been apologizing for how easy is it was for you to get a new agent and I guess I want to say as an aspiring author - how reassuring it is for me (and I suspect for others too) that the querying journey of an established author with a substantial backlist went a lot smoother and easier than a person with no published works under their belt. Yes, it would have made good content to see you go through a longer process - but if it would have been hard for you, what hope do authors without your credentials and connections to the industry have? To see the publishing industry recognize and show value to someone who has done the work, has the skill and has the published works to prove it gives me hope.
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor Год назад
Thank you so much!! :) And you know, I hadn't considered that it might be reassuring in that way, but that makes perfect sense. I was surprised (in a good way) to be told my backlist was a boon and not an anchor, and I can completely see how that is good news for authors who are hoping to debut as well - I'm glad this made you feel more positive about your journey!!

100% agreed. I'm not interested in trad publishing right now (mainly because what I'm writing is a multi-book series, and as far as I know, those don't actually sell in trad spaces), but in the future, I'd definitely try with a standalone. Seeing this go smoothly for you, Michelle, has 100% made me believe more in trad-publishing. You are at the top of your game and if trad-pub didn't see that, I'd be heavily side-eyeing them. 😅

Yes! Congrats! (Feels odd repeating it, but you deserve that and more!❤❤❤❤) I love how you lucked out this way, taking the stress off of the whole agent search. That was so freaking cool how it all lined up so perfectly. I really hope it means that this "act 2" (as you put it) gives you everything you want for your career. And I can't wait for the new books, because my goodness, going on submission in the fall somehow seems way sooner than I would've thought. (Don't know why though. For some reason I thought it'd take time before agents did that.🤷) Also, just wanted to ask if you/we are expected to have a list of your other stories' pitches when you get the Call. Or if this was a one off for that specific agent/agency. Good luck with everything! And congrats again! I'm so happy for you!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor Год назад
Thanks so much, K!! :) And I think it's fairly common for agents to ask authors about other projects they're working on. After all, they're not just representing this one book, but potentially all of your future books - so they want to know if those ideas are a good fit! I would definitely recommend having a few super short pitches ready for a call just in case. :)

Yay!!! So exciting 🎉 Would love to hear more about why you’re not comfortable entering the YA space right now. I have some guesses, because I’m hoping to query a YA (my first novel) and have reservations about the market. But it’s what I wrote… Anyway, would love to hear more if that’s a video you’d be interested in making (if it’s even video material) So excited for your second act and a bright future!!!
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor
@MichelleSchustermanAuthor Год назад
Thank you so much!! :) And I don't think I've actually made a video about being published in YA. To be honest, it's less actually industry issues, more that the toxicity, cancellations, and dogpiling seems to happen in YA more than MG or adult. Another element is that YA is increasingly trending up in age/content - essentially, at least in the US, YA novels feature (in my opinion) characters who think/behave like young 20-somethings instead of teens, and I have no interest in writing that. I'd love to write about the actual 14/15/16 yo experience but that's a tough sell in the US market. That said, for those writing upper YA, it's a different story! It's really subjective.
@MabelWrites
@MabelWrites Год назад
@@MichelleSchustermanAuthor Just saw this! Yes, all of that makes sense. It's funny, I just hired a coach to look at my ms. My protagonist is 14 (I know, I know that doesn't sell, but it's what my intuitive process produced 😕), and the coach says my voice and themes are more MG than YA. So I may be going in the direction of MG, and it feels like something of a relief! This marketing business is a bear :o(
